John has sold the business, the name of the place is now David’s, John still cuts here Tues-Sat, the place use to be closed on Sundays, it is now open 7 days a week. Starting next year he will only be here 3 days a week, I believe Thus-Sat.

Came in here on a total whim. Have a new job starting soon and my hair was in DIRE need of a cut. My regular barber was off, my favorite barbers were too far away and required an appt — so I resorted to the world of Unilocal(sponsorship points?). Anyway, I was in the neighborhood and looked up barbers. To my luck, every single place within the vicinity had 0 reviews — except Penthouse. There was only one long-winded 5 star review that praised the hell out of this place. All I needed was the reassurance that this place is reliable for an old school haircut. 1920’s boardwalk empire style cut. I walk in and see an older gentleman sitting down. He takes me immediately and with a heavy, yet welcoming Italian accent, he says«how do you like it?» If anybody knows how to perfect my cut, it’s an old-school Italian guy. I’ll skip the details(please use the other reviewers details for that). Anyway, 20 minutes later, I walk out with exactly what I wanted — plus had a nice conversation with the barber. If you’re a guy looking for a dependable cut — this is the place to go. P. S. — I never inquired as to what the barber’s name was. He did mention at one point that he was the owner of the place. Also, he sits in the first barber chair. Hope that helps.

John has been cutting my hair for 2 years now. As far as a man’s haircut goes, he’s an expert craftsman. Coming in there you don’t get the same feeling as you would going into a «salon,» and although I can’t comment on the women there and how they do women’s styles(the chair are regularly full so I guess that speaks for itself), I can say that the old school feeling at Penthouse is what made me try it. John doesn’t do the typical shortcut of cutting your hair with electric clippers, he uses scissors for 95% of the haircut, which is a rare thing. Clippers leave dull edges in your hair which makes it less manageable, but scissors allow you to keep length without making your hair stick out. True barbers, the skilled ones, stick to scissors. Writing this I realize I have way too much interest in my hair, comically so, but that should lend credibility to my review if anything. If you’re looking for a barber in the Sheepshead Bay area, you won’t go wrong with this place. The only advice I can give is if you want something modern or something specific that can’t be explained by «short or the sides and back, a little length on the top» bring a photo. Oh, and I’ve never had to make an appointment to John in particular so I can say at minimum that _he_accepts walk-ins. No clue about the other ladies.
