Have enjoyed the place for years. The place is lively – but I must say their bathrooms are disgusting(peeling paint, rotting floors, broken toilets). When I finally mentioned this to the owner, he was enraged and nasty. I can’t say I want to return.

The owner Osamu and his staff are friendly as if they are apart my extended family. The sushi is always fresh and my son absolutely LOVES the teriyaki chicken and udon soup… I LOVETHISPLACE!!!

Good.Basic.Gentrified. I loooove Japanese food. I experience a lot of it and I usually judge the place before I even taste the food. This one didn’t include one asian person sitting at any table. That’s usually not a great sign of authenticity. As I expected, the food was good. But pretty basic and quite americanized. I had read too much about it and was expecting something really special. The sushis were not cool enough for me. A bit warm which gave it a mushy texture. The fried ice cream was bad. The rum on top makes it soggy and messes with the taste of the ice cream. The fried banana however is the bomb and surprisingly might be the best item on the menu… I like the atmosphere there. It really feels like a chill neighborhood spot and I love writing on walls. Definitely a plus! I just feel like the price + the reputation of the place is a bit overdone and I wouldn’t say it’s an experience. It’s fine. @bonjourclem

Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic food. We started with the soba noodle salad and it was great. The real star was the sushi. We got 3 specialty rolls: Obama, Brooklyn and shrimp dragon. The Obama roll was my favorite but they were all absolutely delicious. I would say it’s the best sushi place in the park slope/prospect area. 10⁄10 would recommend.

Very local spot for decent Japanese food. This place is flooded with locals which shows it’s pretty authentic. I’ve tried two appetizers from the sushi bar which was good. The chawanmushi was some of the best I had. It was savory and soft. The only thing was that the shrimp was overcooked in it. Over all the food was good but I wouldn’t intentionally seek to come back again unless I was in the neighborhood. The service here was great.

A neighborhood restaurant that does not warrant an out of the way trip. The restaurant is small and crowded. There isn’t a proper waiting area. There’s a small hallway but if you have to wait there, you’ll probably be in someone’s way at one point or another. The staff is friendly, but it doesn’t make up for the food. We shared the miso cod and it tasted like it was microwaved before service — very dry and flavorless. I had the chirashi and the rice came cold and the fish was very basic and bland. At that price point and with the high ratings, I was expecting better quality. But it looks like a lot of people stick to the rolls.

This place was decent. I think I may have just ordered wrong; I got the vampire roll(which was supposed to be spicy salmon and mango) which wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be, and just a plain avocado roll, which I shouldn’t have expected to be exciting, but added to the underwhelmed feeling from the vampire roll. The atmosphere has a chill vibe and the prices are reasonable, so I will definitely consider going back and giving it another chance with a better order!

This place opened my eyes to Japanese food. I love the rolls, avocado salad and I still remember an octopus salad on the specials menu years ago. Sit at the sushi bar and talk to the regulars for a good time.

Seriously? Why did I just now stumble upon this gem? I actually heard about Geido for awhile but never had the chance to try them myself. Being an Asian and somewhat of a sushi snob, I don’t easily buy into others raving about sushi. Well, I was surely wrong this time. My friend and I went on a Sat night around 7 and was told there was a 30 min wait. We got seated within 15 min! This would never happen in Manhattan. Then I take a look at the menu and couldn’t believe how affordable the prices were. At first, my friend seemed a bit skeptical about the quality since the prices were way too modest. However, after our first bite of the uni, we were sold. We ended up trying so many items for the next 2.5 hrs. I will definitely be coming to Geido to satisfy my Japanese and sushi cravings! Goodbye over-priced Manhattan sushi! Items I tried: Vegetable tempura — simple, light, and crisp! Chawanmushi — highly recommend it! The seasoning was perfect and it was especially great on a cold, winter night Uni sashimi — comes on a cucumber roll. Super fresh and creamy. It disappears in your mouth. Sushi/sashimi deluxe — I substituted the California roll for a spicy tuna roll. The sashimi selection was great and everything tasted fresh! Udon — simple, basic, solid. Brooklyn roll — this was good but not impressive as their other menu. Eel & avocado roll — get this!

You should eat here. Moved in to a new apartment around the corner a few months ago and I’m not sure why it took me so long to really discover this place. The food is easily some of the better Japanese food I’ve had and the value is great. Noodle dishes are very inexpensive and absolutely delicious. Sushi is top-notch and very reasonably priced. Lots of interesting specials and nontraditional items as well. Customer service is what has me coming back, though. Extremely friendly and attentive staff in a cool and relaxed environment makes sure that you’re comfortable and happy at all times. Doesn’t hurt that the guys at the sushi bar like to give away free drinks(bourbon, champagne, sake) and snacks(intersting japanese crackers, pistachios, special rolls) Only negative thing I could think to say is that the wall-to-wall carpet is pretty filthy. You should eat here, though. I love geido.

I highly recommend Geido for delicious Japanese food. If you’re into sushi rolls, they have some pretty goods ones too. We typically order sashimi/sushi and the other more traditional dishes. I love their broiled Nasu(eggplant) and Chawanmushi dish which is the best I’ve tasted in a long time! My husband and I sat in front of Chef Osamu twice and I can say that we’ve walked out a little buzzed from all the sake he was ‘recommending’. We love sitting at the sushi bar and see the Chef work his magic. Before you order from the menu, make sure you take a look at the specials on both walls. Chef Osamu is a little quiet at first but once you get to know him, you know why this is his establishment and why everyone loves him! I still can’t believe I’ve been living here for 5 years and only heard about this place last year. They have been around for 30 years! I love the wall graffiti and the lively atmosphere. Everyone seems to know each other and the staff, it’s great to see locals support this business. We’ll definitely be going back here often.

I LOVE geido. They have fresh delicious sushi. In the winter their soup will fill you up and keep you warm. The service is great; I’ve never had a bad experience. On the weekends the wait can be long but they are so good about turning tables without making you feel rushed.

A long-time resident of the neighborhood. Don’t let the relatively simple setting fool you, the food here is authentic and great. The prices are totally reasonable for this amazing authentic food. Plus, the staff is friendly and great.

I’ve never had a bad experience coming to this long standing go-to Sushi joint that’s been around in this neighborhood for quite some time. So I thought it high time to rave about Geido’s consistent goodness after my «work husband» & I went for dinner tonight. We had a quality, low-key, yet totally fulfilling Tuesday night dinner. My chirashi was so fresh, flavorful, yet simple, just as it should be! The crisp & succulent array of fish pieces was accented by the absolutely deliciously seasoned seaweed & the seasoned crab purée garnish in the bowl added a delightful dimension. The portion was large enough to call filling, but not overwhelming. Every single aspect was quality without falling into an upscale kind of category. I had a basic house cold sake with dinner which was unremarkable but it the spot just fine. I knew his black cod dish was going to be a simple smallish piece of fish that would taste like heaven & it totally hit the mark. He ordered the spinach with sesame seasoning/sauce from the vegetable section of the menu.(I liked that the vegetable section is basically an array of both classic & inventive vegetable side dishes that you can order a la carte to compliment say a lone piece of fish, as he chose). The spinach dish was actually very filling! I was surprised at the spinach side dish being somewhat heavy, although simple in recipe and quite tasty! The service was great & the atmosphere bright, bustling, informal, cheerful with a reassuring yet understated tone of Japanese cuisine mastery. Perfect combination of excellent food and dining style we were after tonight & didn’t break the bank either. Great experience !!

I highly recommend Geido for some delicious Japanese food! Try to sit at the sushi bar if you can, you’ll have some great views. The menu is huge and very interesting and unique. They have all the classics but also some more unusual items — for instance, in addition to all the regular tempuras they also had fish cake tempura! I want to go back to try some of these items. Go early because they run out of items sometimes, like the night we went they did not have anymore toro by 9:00 pm. Cheap and delicious large hot sake for $ 8 started off the night right. Next we had a tofu appetizer special served with vegetables, fish flakes and ponzu sauce. The chirashi entrée was delicious and the fish was all excellent and very fresh. I loved that it came with ground spicy tuna also. Finally, we had one of their special sushi rolls, which included eel and mango and was topped in a mound of fried crunchy bits. Left very satisfied!

This cozy, friendly joint is everything you’d expect from a neighborhood institution. Very warm ambiance and servers. Delicious, and fresh food. Loved the specials of the day(especially the octopus). It gets really busy and is only open for dinner. We live across the street so were able to put our names down and then come back in a half hour to be seated. A ton of families and kids, so there was no need to feel self conscious with our 10 month old in his high chair. Really enjoy everything about this place, and the price tag is super reasonable.

3.5 stars. Geido wasn’t my first choice, but its graffiti-splattered walls, lively atmosphere, and tasty appetizers brought me back to Japan for a moment. Wasan was booked for the night, so we grabbed one of the last available tables on Sunday night. Geido doesn’t take reservations and fills up quickly, but people don’t seem to linger for too long. The crowd was mixed. Not to offend, but I do judge Japanese restaurants by how many actual Japanese people are dining there. In this case, it was a mix of Japanese people drinking heavily, families, and California roll-types. I didn’t think the rolls were anything special(we ordered the Obama and Super Eel). They were fine but not the most innovative rolls you’ll ever have. I actually preferred the«just for fun» dishes were ordered: the fish cake tempura and fried mackerel(a chalkboard special). The mackerel was perfectly battered, crispy, and flavorful! I was also curious about their battera(pressed, rectangluar sushi) but didn’t get it… maybe next time. They also serve one of my favorite foods, okonomiyaki(savory grilled pancakes). Overall, go for the good vibes and good(but not great) food! Next time I will probably stick to the street foods and hot appetizers vs. sushi rolls.

Geido is definitely my place of choice whenever I’m in or near the Slope and in the mood for Izakaya grub or sushi. Not exactly the best spot for groups– but its pret good for groups of 2 – 4. The overall vibe from the door to the interior is very nice and urban. I haven’t had their okonomiyaki in a while but Iremember it being pretty good, just a bit small or thinner compared to other places I’ve been. Also had their avocado gyoza which was. The business. So serious. I’ve read that they’ve removed it from the menu though??? I’ve never noticed the change, but WHYYYYY would they do that??? They were better than the regular flavors IMO I’ve tried their tuna, salmon and spicy tuna rolls and they were the freshest, most filling sushi I’ve ever had. I definitely want to return for some of their special rolls. Also miso soup, but miso soup is miso soup lol When I had went one time they also had banana tempura for dessert? . Their service is pretty decent, I don’t remember ever having to wait for long for anything I got. Definitely recommend, though again I’d recommend going by yourself or with a –small– group.

Drooling just thinking about the meals I had! Great value for the amazing quality! I have been to few fancy Japanese places around midtown and paid twice as much to eat great quality Japanese food. Salmon collarbone special was so yummy and so was the grilled cod. I love love love uni and the uni sashimi satisfied my craving times 10!!! We were celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday here and we had such s great time! Highly recommended!

It’s no longer a mystery why this place stays jam packed all the time. The sushi is bangin! I ordered take out both times I’ve visited but ate right away so that quality wasn’t compromised. My next trip I hope to dine in and sit at the sushi bar for the full experience. Great option if you’re on Flatbush Ave in need of food.

Food was delicious! I scarfed down my katsu curry with chicken within 15 minutes, and my tempura ice cream, as well! Prices are very fair. The décor is really cool, and the staff are really sweet. I popped by the Starbucks across the street to study, and their bathroom broke down, so I came back with shame to Geido, and they let me use the bathroom. Next time I come here, I want to try the sushi. The curry is one of the better Japanese curry’s I’ve had in NYC! It’s even better than Curry-ya. I saw some of the other table’s orders and the sushi looked delicious and gorgeously put together. Props to you, Geido!

I always see this place hoppin’ and it seemed to have a cool vibe, so I had high expectations for this place. Finally decided to eat an early Friday night dinner here. The staff was really friendly. I ordered the Vegetable Okonomiyaki to share and Mushroom Udon for myself. I found the Okonomiyaki too thick and didn’t have much taste other than the spicy mayo sauce drizzled on top. The Mushroom Udon was pleasant, it was okay. Given there’s always a wait, I don’t think I would come back.

Darn, darn, darn! So wanted this to be awesome and it really was just fine. The décor does not affect my decision at all, but it was nice to see a kid friendly place with aspirations of quality cooking/sushi preparation. The menu was so inviting but the ultimate presentation and, most of all, taste, was quite a letdown. Fried oysters — perfectly fine. Okonomiyaki: they no longer have the seafood version on their menu. The vegetable version was so clunky and chunky, overstuffed with nearly raw and poorly planked pieces of cabbage, making it difficult to cut and eat. I prefer versions that are more delicate with smaller vegetables. Cannon ball: terrible. Fish felt like remnant quality. Ponzu sauce was no different than standard soy — no tangy punch. Completely lackluster. We had 3 special rolls: all had tiny, microscopic pieces of fish in the roll, no fish on the outside. One had promised eel and we expected it to be presented in the typical fashion of a special roll with the eel on the outside. Nope. For one roll, we requested no mango and they left it in anyway. I suspect they did so because without it, the roll would have virtually been empty. Service was meh. Took 10 minutes before I stepped up to the register to get my card back. Overall, so sad to have longed to visit this place for so long, only to find that it did not meet expectations. Back to the drawing board…

I had this place bookmarked for over a year before my friend suggested it to me out of the blue. Fun place for decent fish. If you’re looking to escape the questionable AYCE places in Bensonhurst, but aren’t willing to pay a premium, then this would be your joint. Kitschy restaurant, if there ever was one. I can’t even start with the carpet situation; the scribbles on the wall, however, brought me back to Takeshita Street in Tokyo. The whole place is an interesting conversation starter. On my 2nd visit, it was New Year’s Eve, and since Geido doesn’t take reservations, I knew we were in for a wait. I believe we waited a little over 45 minutes for a table of 11. During that time, the host, who was armed with a positive vibe and the cutest dimples ever, was very friendly and engaging. He kept us updated and reassured us that he would try his best to get us seated ASAP. I was very impressed by how he handled himself, considering Geido always has a crowd standing in the black ‘room’ outside the main restaurant space. I’m going to warn you that it isn’t fun to stand in this awkward, unlighted & unheated black hole during the winter. When our bones warmed up, we split the table up so the two halves could share dishes. I was impressed by the fact that Japanese chefs worked the counter. Usually, that means the standards for cuts on the fish and the freshness of the fish can be vouched for. I immediately ordered the uni, but when it arrived, I was disappointed by the color and taste; instead of the familiar bright yellow, I got a dark tinted piece. I was glad that we only ordered a pop each. The rest of the food included various dishes like the spicy salmon salad, sushi rolls– both regular and specialty, udon and rice dishes with tonkatsu(breaded pork). The Obama roll, dubbed a specialty, was an abomination. I didn’t know what I was eating because it was shaped like a tempura football. All I got was the fried batter and very little fish. I failed to see why it was even named that as it bore no resemblance to anything that reminded me of our President. The other half of the group also ordered it, and I could see that theirs had more fish within. As I looked over the bill, which was laughable(& I couldn’t believe I was put in charge of it) since my math is atrocious, I noticed there was a dish that was unaccounted for on both ends of the table. I notified the waitress, and she was hesitant to credit the sushi plate. She said that no one stopped her when it was placed on our table, but both sides were 100% sure that we didn’t even eat it. After some back and forth, she finally acquiesced and removed it from the total. It was a minor hitch, but I could see her seething below the surface. Though it was an average place for food, the casual, but vibrant environment does entice one to return. For fun, not necessarily for food.

Great place for sushis, sashimis, makis, tuna tartare and other delicious dishes they have. The place is nice, has a great vibe with all its graffitis and urban deco. They have huge sapporos glasses to pear with your meal. We had a series of various plates and dishes, all were very attractive and very delicious. Tip: it’s busy! plan ahead if you want to go there.
