Simply amazing spot for a Japanese obanzai experience in Cobble Hill. I came in for lunch and had the Obento Box which consisted of grilled marinated mackerel and an assortment of sides. The broth for the miso soup was very flavorful without being heavy. The mackerel was delicious, albeit a little bit bony, and the pickles and salads complimented it well. The traditional décor and atmosphere and excellent service rounded off the perfectly portioned and low priced meal that only results from good execution of deeply rooted Japanese culinary philosophy.

Best Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn! The miso salmon is my favorite but the rest of the menu is also very good. High quality for a great price!

This place has been one of my favs for many years. It’s the best Japanese in town. I love the simplicity of all their dishes. I ordered the seaweed salad, the tuna sashimi salad, housemade tofu(of course) and the sashimi plate. All of the sashimi was delicious. I loved the seaweed salad and the tuna sashimi salad. The tuna salad comes with mixed greens, incredible dressing and avocado. It is so good!!! and fresh!!! I got the pancake ice cream sandwich dessert that everyone gets. The pancakes were a bit stale but overall, it was yummy. Hibino is as stroller-nation Brooklyn as it gets. Every single table had a little baby doing all kinds of crazy things… I love babies but sometimes I couldn’t hear my thoughts.

I couldn’t live without this place. Their yellowtail scallion roll is the best I’ve ever had. For lunch if you can get the salmon collar you’re in for a treat. I wish they were open on weekends for brunch. I want Japanese breakfast!!!

Okay so before you even dine here, you must lower your expectations a bit. The prices are great for the neighborhood its in. Granted, Cobble Hill is not really known for its Japanese restaurants. The fact that there is even a Japanese restaurant on Henry Street is a feat in itself. The sushi and sashimi tastes great(not mind-blowing) and the other items on the menu tastes great too. I can never compare a place like this to a place in Japan. It wouldn’t be fair since the seafood, rice, water, etc. is just different. Its very relaxed and laid-back, almost like a neighborhood diner. Come early because there ain’t no reservations. Try the weekdays because weekends are full of downtown Brooklyn yuppies and their kids.

I love this place! The Sushi was incredibly soft and fresh. Chicken Teriyaki was great as was their home teas. It’s a great place to dine solo. Get a seat at the bar, bring a book and relax

Very authentic feel to the restaurant. Got the peach mixed veggie juice, sushi dinner and soy milk custard for dessert. Sushi set was the standout– it had great variety and I was really impressed by the quality of the fish. I loved the citrusy mayo on the side — definitely unique. Also the price is great for the quality, so I’ll definitely be back. It was really nice to sit at the bar and watch the chefs make all the sushi. Mixed veggie and peach juice was ok. Wouldn’t get it again but I didn’t have much veggies so thought it was a good nutritional supplement. Soy milk custard was great — well presented and had a nice layer at the top that added complexity to the taste. Not too sweet and exactly what I was looking for. Service was excellent, very friendly.

The tofu was good. .. like, really good, for tofu. That said, I can’t imagine craving it and making a special trip to Hibino for my tofu fix. Otherwise, the sushi and the ice cream sandwich were totally, 100% fine. I’m starting to think that maybe my sushidar(radar for sushi? can i make that a thing?) is just totally off. I have a hard time discerning between what people call excellent sushi and what people call mediocre sushi. So, anyway, this sushi was either excellent or mediocre depending on how broken my sushidar is.

Nice little spot near henry. We didn’t wait too long. We got a mixed of things between the soft hot tofu, agedashi tofu, kanuni beef and then a few sushi and sashimi entrees. We were dying to try the ice cream, but it wasn’t anything too crazy. Everything was very neat here, and clean. Food was very tasty and prepared well. I think we will have to venture and try some more of the specials next time. The hanger hamber steak was really a hit.

Venue — small and cozy, with enough seating. If you don’t have reservations, you may have to wait. Food — They have daily specials on the board. The appetizers(aside from the tofu) are quite large in portion and should either be shared or treated as a meal. They have homemade tofu that is really good and comes in a cute little pot. Can’t go wrong with anything here! Service — Friendly. + Homemade Tofu + Daily specials + Accepts Credit

I have been here twice. Definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. It is not one of those sushi joints by Chinese. It is real authentic yet creative Japanese dishes. The tofu pudding is the best. My tips is to try ALL their today specials.

Bit disappointed as this place was recommended by my Japanese friend. I got the eel avocado roll, it was really just okay, tasted the same as the ones from Korean deli. I also tried beef kakuni, one of the more popular entrée. The portion was big. It just did not hit the spot, I would say it was okay(again.) I’m not sure if it is just me or this place is overrated. In any case I will give it another shot when i’m around next time.

A neighborhood restaurant that’s a bit of take-out factory. We sat at the bar, so we could see the food getting prepped. The chefs seemed a little miserable, and because of the sheer volume of the takeout orders, it was very hectic. They also don’t have a dishwasher so there were two people running around the whole time washing dishes and putting them away. The kitchen area is pretty tiny. The service was adequate but rushed. When food was brought to us, it was just set down and there was no explanation of the food. We had the fresh tofu, and it comes in a jar with ginger and sauce on the side. It would have been nice to have an explanation on how to go about eating it, but we were just left on our own. I mean, it’s not rocket science, but it was our first time getting a dish like that, so a little guidance would have been nice. We had the stewed chicken obanzai. It was bland and not memorable. The box pressed mackerel was also underwhelming. For our entrees, we had the beef kakuni and the sashimi plate. I think I wanted the chirashi, but they said they didn’t have it. The fish was ok, not great quality, but it was edible and I didn’t get sick. The beef kakuni was a huge portion. It was tender, but not very flavorful and not seasoned well. The whole experience was a dud. I felt almost anxious from the staff running around and all the children crying. There also is a lot of people coming in and out asking for tables and picking up their takeout. And without a proper waiting area, if you are sitting somewhat close to the door, this can get annoying. Bonus: A family of 5 was there and their daughter had a tantrum and threw her bowl of rice and other food all over the floor and splattered on the guests at the next table over. If it got on me, I would have been angry, but seeing it from afar was kind of amusing. Be prepared to sit next to lots of children!

This place was a rare find! A truly authentic Japanese place with some really novel takes on standard Japanese restaurant fare. My boyfriend and I split a spicy tuna roll so good, we ended up ordering a second. Most of the time, spicy tuna rolls are kind of cold and chewy but this one was soft and warm and the sauce on top was a little more tangy than spicy. For our mains, he got the tonkatsu, which was pretty good, according to him. I got the teriyaki chicken, which was fantastic. The chicken skin was crispy without being crunchy, and the chicken was soft and tender. The sauce was delicious, a sweet but more savory blend. And the chicken sat on top of fresh vegetables, chosen to perfectly complement the chicken. Delicious. There seems to be a bit of a wait during the summer dinner hours so be prepared to not be seated right away. Also, it can get rowdy because they have an extensive drinks menu. But — definitely worth a trip.

Hibino has amazing obanzai that features comfort food from Kyoto, Japan. Obanzai is a great way to explore homestyle cuisine for just $ 5 each. FYI: These specials change daily. Obanzai #1: The Saba, a broiled soy marinated mackerel with bamboo shoots seasoned with curry powder, was delicious. I dislike fish but I had to try it & it did not disappoint me. It was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, & it didn’t leave a strong aftertaste of fish. The bamboo shoots were slightly seasoned & paired well with the mackerel. Obanzai #2: The Beef Kakuni, a braised short rib in sweet soy broth with house made tofu, topped with Tokyo scallions, was another yummy dish. The beef was so tender, it fell apart as I cut into it with a fork & the broth was light & flavorful. Entrée #1: The Tonkatsu, a breaded & fried pork loin served with sauce, was juicy & golden fried. This was not my main dish but of course I had to sample some of it & it was the best Tonkatsu I have ever had. Entrée #2: The Hibino Teriyaki Chicken, a roasted organic chicken served with seasonal vegetables, had a nice crisp on the outside, the meat was moist, & the teriyaki sauce was thin & had a nice touch of sweetness. Both entrées were served with a bowl of tasty vinegar rice. The Dorayaki Ice Cream Sandwich was a perfect way to end the night. It’s red bean pancakes filled with red bean paste, strawberries, & green tea ice cream. The downside to Hibino is that you have to arrive early to avoid a long wait. Also, the bottled beer was a tad overpriced. If you find yourself in Cobble Hill, make some arrangements to try some good Japanese cuisine at Hibino.

Went here with family on Friday night. The service and the food were both excellent! We waited longer than what we were told was the norm(due to a party just sitting on their check) and were given a free app due to this. Very classy of them to do that for us! The avocado roll was definately in my top two avocado roll experiences. The roll that was the squash was to die for! I can’t even explain how good this roll tasted, it was just THAT good. Their wasabi sauce was killer. It made my sinus issues clear right up! We will definitely be back when we are back in the area!

I had a strange experience at Hibino. I really wanted to like it given the rave reviews, but I just didn’t enjoy the taste of the dishes. I feel I probably ordered the wrong things. But the service was wonderful! We ordered the beef kakuni, which was actually quite good, but the obanzai dishes just missed the mark. We had one seaweed-based dish that was far too slimy and salty. I’m going to give this place another shot and perhaps order some sushi and different obanzai.

We actually originally decided to eat at Ki Sushi due to their high reviews on Unilocal. However, when we got there, they had a B grade; immediate turn off. Luckily there are many sushi spots in that area and the next place that came up with great reviews was Hibino. Thankfully when we got there they had an A! My boyfriend ordered the chicken teriyaki entrée which came with miso soup and an obanzai appetizer which was like stewed mackerel. I didn’t taste the miso soup but my boyfriend liked it. The stewed mackerel was so good! It wasn’t fishy, was well seasoned, and the broth was great! The chicken teriyaki, which came with a side of white rice, was extremely flavorful as well; we loved that sauce wasn’t too sweet or salty as teriyaki sauce tends to be — it was very well balanced. I ordered a lobster tempura roll and shrimp sushi with a side of white rice. Both were quite tasty and I especially enjoyed the shrimp sushi. The best part was that everything cost $ 47.40! Not too bad for the quality and quantity of food that we got. We eat a lot and we definitely left satisfied.

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Cobble Hill. That being said it is already ahead of the game. The other so-called Japanese restaurants in the area are Chinese or Korean run and have pretty much the same standard fare. It’s the homey atmosphere and obanzai selections that make this place special. The miso salmon zuke, grilled perfectly with an obanzai add-on of daikon and pork belly, was the right amount of food and flavor. The Hibino sushi plate of 7 pieces and a Kyoto futomaki was very fresh and oishii. The scallop was especially smooth and sweet and the Kyoto futomaki which had eel, shrimp, tuna, tobiko, avocado and cucumber and yuzu mayonnaise was a nice departure from the standard California roll in most sushi combos. The lighter fare gave us room for dessert which consisted of their signature soy milk pudding served in a miniature glass milk bottle which was not too sweet but still satisfying and a substantial Japanese dorayaki ice cream sandwich. All in all, it was fulfilling without being too filling.
