Sushi restaurants in NYC are a dime a dozen. I’m pretty jaded being a native New Yorker so it really takes a lot to impress me. Kiku did have the typical dim lighting and trendy atmosphere common to most sushi joints, and I have to say I did really like the comfortable lounge seating… but nothing special. I went with a friend; we each ordered a cocktail and some sushi, both of which were really expensive. The drinks took 15 minutes [and they were pretty standard too] to make and were mixed terribly. I mean, when I order a mango cocktail, I expect light, girly, fruity – getting a buzz without ever tasting alcohol – not rubbing alcohol followed by a blast of sugar. It was gross, really hard to drink but I was spending $ 7 – 9 on it [at lunch time] so I pretty much had to. Then the sushi came, I got a spicy tuna and salmon roll. It was horrid. The consistency of the fish was so off it tasted like a liquid rather than the thick, spicy, wonderful paste that fills the spicy tuna roll. Eating it was like eating fish baby food, it wasn’t even that spicy. I had to coat each piece in wasabi, soy, and ginger [and pawn off a few pieces] just to get through it. Not to mention that the rolls were so poorly rolled that they practically fell apart when you picked them up. Ugh. I’ve been to hole in the wall places that did this better. I’ve had cafeteria sushi that tasted better. I’ve had sushi in Wisconsin that tasted better [and not in a city either]. I would never go back to this place. Really a disgrace considering, until I walked into this place, Smith St. has never let me down.

I love this place! It’s a bit weird to be honest. I’m not quite sure what they are trying to accomplish – the décor is very classy, and the food and presentation is also classy, but the top 40 music, and sports on the TV really are fairly confusing. The staff is super nice and accommodating. I hope this place catches on, it is almost always empty – although this might be part of what I like so much about it. Sometimes I just am not in the mood to climb over some stranger and sit closer to them than whoever I am eating dinner with just to be at a trendy place. Anyway, props to Kiku!

Decent Sushi place. Kinda darkish interior with wood and a Zen-ish feel. I am over the whole sushi craze though, so I may be somewhat biased in my sushi reviews. It’s gotta be something spectacular to wow me.

Cheap, fresh and delicious. I’ve been ordering-in from here for ages but I finally made it to their Smith St. location last night. I was truly impressed with the presentation — usually budget sushi is just rolls on a plate but at Kiku they really make the effort to make you feel like you are paying more than you are. Also, the dinner special is a sweet deal($ 15 gets you 3 rolls, an appetizer and soup or salad). Saki is relatively inexpensive also.

Good sushi for a really good price. If you want a really great deal ask to order from the take out menu. They have a 3 roll combo plus soup or salad plus an appetizer for something like $ 16. The sushi is pretty fresh and the atmosphere is pleasant. Only negative point is service sometimes takes awhile.

The 2nd worst sushi in Carroll Gardens next to Szechuan Garden(the fast food Chinese place that has a random 50% off sushi menu) anyway Kiku has the presentation down but the sushi is substandard and the rice tastes terrible. There’s a reason a miso soup /appetizer /three sushi rolls is 15 bucks. The sky is blue, cheap sushi is horrible.

I’m a fan of the Kiku in Park Slope, and this didn’t disappoint at all. The same high quality, delicious sushi. I haven’t eaten at the restaurant yet, but the décor is nice, and I’d definitely go there if I felt like eating sushi out. I also love that they give you fruit when you get take out/delivery — it’s a nice touch. I’d say that it keeps me coming back, but it’s the sushi that does that. Delicious.

This place is really nice, roomy and comfy and my first time there. it’s only 2 blocks away from where i live. I go for Shusi/Japanese food 2 – 3 times a week, in Brooklyn/NYC. I Love the presentation. I order the Sexy Roll Which was OK doesn’t taste as good as it look. But i’m willing to give this place another shot. Food is OK, Good Service, Great Atmosphere. 3 stars for now.

Decent standard sushi. The wine was surprisingly good for house wine at $ 6 a glass. However, the sushi was only so-so. The cuts were too big for one thing and we had one house specialty roll that was almost 100% rice with almost nothing in the interior. Not bad, just not great, and not really all that cheap.
