This is my favourite bar in New York City. The décor is great and they have a great selection of beers. The bartenders are always super nice. It gets busy on Fridays and Saturdays, probably due to the fact that it is the southern border of the South Slope bar scene, and Sunset Park is a bar desert.

Went here for New Year’s Eve(free to attend, prosecco at midnight, hats and noisemakers were given out) and I am really glad we did. We wanted to go out, not spend a ton just to go to a bar, and be around friendly people. We got our wish. When we got there, it was pretty empty(~8) and we had a chance to talk to the bartenders. They were nice, funny, and sassy. Décor was interesting, dolls and provocative book covers hanging from the ceiling. It is cash only, which isn’t my favorite, but It’ll work. I will go again!

I am lucky enough to live right around the corner from Mary’s Bar!!! Atmosphere: Divey in the best way possible. Cool crowd, nice little pool table, and I believe they have darts there as well. Drinks: What you would expect from a dive bar, and inexpensive Food: They make food there and serve it! SUPER cool!

Probably my favorite bar in Brooklyn ! Staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is great! Great selection of beers ! Great for shooting pool, you will always find someone who will have a game with you! Moved out of the area so anytime I’m back I always make an effort to visit here!

Delightfully divey without taking itself seriously as a dive! In other words, yes you can still get high quality tap beers at reasonable prices. Pool if you are into that. Chatty bar scene also. Seating is what’s best since it affords space for more intimate conversations. A nice, no pressure place to spend a few hours.

Cool, neighborhood vibe. I love the refurbished ceilings, and the no-frills, old-school feel that this bar has. Will always hold a special place in my memory.

I really like this bar! At first I thought it was a little old man bar but when I went in it is quite big with a pool table in back and even a small outside side area to sit. Lots of tables and a huge bar. Good music and a good crowd. Happy hour is pretty good too! Bartendars are friendly. Will be coming again.

Loved the music there and the vibe was good. Went there late and there were people there. The drinks were good. I would go back and have food next time.

It’s the bar down the block that isn’t as great as Freddy’s or SeaWitch. I’m sorry, but im not because you know its true. Beer selection is decent though and I will give them that. It’s also a bizarre little dive bar that serves over-priced champagne cocktails. Or at least it was in honor of the Academy Awards for the week. I have no idea who came up with that stupid idea but my friend that loves cocktails poured over the page lovingly. They were movie themed cocktails if it makes you squee like a lady even more. Would you like a Julianne Moore or a Reese Witherspoon? Actually, not going to lie, if there was a Meryl Streep I would have ordered that yesterday. But UM, I will take a Wolaver’s Alta Gracia Coffee Porter because I’m a beer snob and brought a Brokelyn Beer book with me. It was a great beer as I gave it 4.5 stars on untappd. I think what annoyed me was in my drunken state I scampered off to the piano in the corner to play a little diddy(bar was totally empty) and the bartender scolded me. They apparently don’t let people play the piano in the corner. Ok. There is a pool table in the back. It is a nice addition to the ever changing neighborhood of South Slope but I don’t know yet if I would go out of my way to come back. Happy hour is from 2−8pm every day. They sell pbr for $ 3 but why would I do that when there are so many lovely craft beers? They are cash only as a heads up like most bars in the area.

Is it weird that living in close proximity to Mary’s is actually something I will be looking for when I hunt for my next apartment? The bartenders are all the jam. As are the patrons. No pretentious, judgmental people here at all. The environment is super welcoming. Everyone is friendly and approachable and if you find yourself in regular attendance, you’ll also find yourself with tons of friends in the neighborhood. I’ve brought friends and family of all ages here for drinks and whether they’re 25, 40 or 65, they’ve loved it. The lighting is awesome and there’s tons of seating. It’s seriously perfect for every occasion whether you want to play Yahtzee with the regulars on a rainy Sunday afternoon or you’re meeting a Tinder girl for the first time for drinks on a Friday night. The bar is beautiful and literally the most incredible people on earth work here. Let me tell you, I do a real lot of drinking and this is hands-down my favorite bar ever.

Mary’s is one of my favorite hang outs. From their eclectic array of souvenirs and«chachkies» behind the bar, to the awesome bartenders, it’s perfect for any kind of crowd for any kind of occasion. I love Mary’s… Ask for Butch, he’s the bomb.

This is a great neighborhood bar. Places that are full of regulars are rarely so friendly. There was lots of space — it’d be great for groups — and pool tables. It seems like a great place to hang out on a rainy day and chat with whoever.

Sunday afternoon bar crawl series chapter 4 — review details shaky from here on out. Great bar! They had a bunch of bottles and taps and a big room filled with people genuinely enjoying themselves. My friend & myself were the only folks there who didn’t know everybody else but there wasn’t a hint of cold-shoulder or cliquey-ness to be found. We got our drinks and repaired to the tiny outdoor space along the side of the building. On such a beautiful evening in late August as last night it was just the thing. Cash only so I’ve begrudgingly removed a star as I don’t like my drinking spell to be broken by facing an ATM fee. Small thing I know, but it keeps from from spending as much as I probably would if I didn’t have to think about the money end of it until the final reckoning.

There’s not much to dislike about this place. Sure it’s cash only but they have an ATM right by the darts and pool table in back so it’s not very inconvienent. Mary’s, unlike most bars, is very diverse in it’s clientele, it’s a really welcoming crowd with all sorts. Apparently they have different events and themed nights here but I just came here on a regular Saturday night. I liked they had a small side patio outside with a couple tables and had a beautiful high tin ceiling adding to the already spaciousness of the place. The darts they have for you to borrow were surpisingly a very good quality but the chalk board they have with dart board was useless, they should really change that out. I’m nit picking though, Mary’s is a great neighborhood bar worth stopping by for a reasonably priced drink(beers start at $ 3 – 4) if you’re in the area.

Best place ever! Bar tenders know their stuff, cool people, down to earth feel & great prices. If you’re looking for a trendy yet still grounded bar– Mary’s is the place to be. They have fun events– I love Wednesday 80’s night.

I met Jorge at franny’s — a restaurant/bar that sits on the line between four and five stars like an Israeli tank sits on the gaza border. He was working as a bartender there. And like all of frannys’s bartenders, Jorge pours drinks and carries a level of casual-sophistication that’s rarely found anywhere else in the borough. «I just opened a bar, it’s called Mary’s on 5th avenue and 17th street,» he told me as he poured me another glass of perfectly fizzing lambrusco. I had already heard of it, and had actually visited once with a friend on a day of stumbling through many bars. I live two blocks from Mary’s, but didn’t make a point of seeking it out as it didn’t strike me as anything special. In retrospect, and after 11 visits, i was just too glazed over, or too drunk, to see how great this place is. [Lets switch gears for a second. As I write this, sitting tucked in a booth, pilsner ahead of me, looking at the following Mary’s regulars: 1. A 60+ year old couple sitting a the bar, their leather coats draped over their bar stools like chocolate sauce over ice cream cones. 2. A genuinely friendly bartender who takes pleasure in serving her customers. She is, unknowingly, a reaffirming force in a borough plagued by indifferent ‘bartender’ shit sippers. 3. An African American in a blue jean jacket, and blue jeans. God bless America. You want these people in your local bar.] Back to Jorge — owner operator of Mary’s. Jorge designed Mary’s to appeal to one, specific demographic — the immediate neighborhood. His strategy, guided by his lengthy service-industry experience, has succeeded. Mary’s is a fucking institution for locals. Every demographic of the hood is represented here — old folks, singles, restaurant workers, couples, etc. And no babies. I want you to come here so that you can enjoy it for yourself. I don’t want you to come here so that I can have it all to myself. Whatever the case, it’s a win win for Mary’s, and five it is.
