I believe they are out of business now, which is a shame

I ate at Migita tonight, probably for the first and last time :( Of the dishes that I ordered, the only one that I can give 4 stars is the baked spicy salad — it is a nice combination of cooked spicy(I think) salmon, roe, spicy mayo and mixed salad. For the price of $ 6, it is an OK deal(although I am spoiled by the $ 3 lunch kani salad at Hana Café). I also ordered the Dynamite(which is cooked shrimp, scallop, mushroom in a spicy mayo with roe) — the scallop was overcooked and pinkish in color and tasted a bit off. I ordered the mixed tempura(with shrimp) — it came and was already cold and I had to reheat it myself to be able to eat a bit of it. I got two rolls — the yellowtail roll for $ 4 was OK — it tasted fine and the portion of yellowtail in the roll was fine. The chef’s special«baked spicy roll» for $ 6 was a complete disaster — the carrot was uncooked and hard to chew, the fish combination was overcooked and the sauce was simply awful. It is sad, so many people have given such good reviews — I may go back tomorrow or else I may just go to Hana Café and enjoy their $ 3/dish lunch menu.

Me and my sister stopped here to eat lunch. I have been to this place to take out before, and ate here once before and let me just say… Do NOT order the shrimp tempura. I had ordered us each an order of California Rolls, salad, she had the chicken tempura and I had the shrimp tempura. The California rolls were okay but the rice was hot… Which made it taste a bit funny. The could have cooled the rice off or had us wait until it cooled off. Also the avocado was not fresh… One of my pieces, the avocado had a dark spot. Fresh avocado is very firm while the avocado in our rolls was really soft like paste. The salad dressing was nasty on the salad. The shrimp tempura was FULL with DOO-DOO /the black line /sand /dirt or whatever you want to call it. I personally slice the back of my shrimp when I cook at home and take that nasty party out. I was so pissed off when I saw that man. Most restaurant will remove that part but I guess they figured people would not notice since its covered in batter. I did! I had to have some of my sisters Chicken tempura which was tasty!!! Would I come back here??? Maybe if I don’t feel like driving to Manhattan and only for the California rolls. WARNING: DONOTEATTHESHRIMPTEMPURAFROMHERE. THESHRIMPARENOTCLEAN! P. S. They gave us fried chicken sample at the beginning which was VERY tasty. Very small fry chicken pieces. I should have ordered that!

I was out on a date and decided to give this place a test run. It was definitely a good call. I don’t eat sushi on a regular basis but I’ve eaten it enough to tell the difference from place to place. Compared to other places I’ve been, this one has become a favorite. The wait staff is great and the service is quick. So if you happen to be in the area or in your way to the promenade and you get a taste for sushi, you might want to try this place out.

UPDATE: Definitely sad they’ve closed this place. They did it in a pretty gangster fashion, though; they’ve been«renovating» for about a year prior to removing any signs of life. :) There’s a sushi place a few steps up the block… but they don’t have the green tea ice cream that made this place home for me. :( —— I love this place. Then again, I’m biased. See, I needed to take a Chemistry II course at New York City Technical College, which is a little over a half a mile away from here. For those that have been there or are currently enrolled there, you already know where I’m going with this. The school is craptastic. The teachers were great, but the building was unsettling, the administration was a hassle and boy, did it make a great companion with my projects at work! I needed to find a nice place to clear my mind after some bad test results and found Migita in the process. The atmosphere is incredibly pleasant and the waitresses were very nice. It’s never been crowded or loud in here, which is a plus for more«personal» dinners. They remember you if you come often; always a nice-to-have. If you’re looking for the authentic Japanese treatment, you won’t find it here, though. The selection is varied, but not incredibly vast. They have all of the main offenders(California Roll et. al.) and a healthy amount of in-house creations. I ordered the Pink Flamingo on my first visit and have been hooked ever since. The sushi is big, plentiful and very delicious! For the price, it’s actually a lot! I’m not much of a drinker, but it probably goes well with a cold sake or Sapporo. It definitely went well with the green tea ice cream they offer. Budget sushi places can be a hit or miss. This applies even more so in downtown Brooklyn, where there are, surprisingly, only a handful of them. At least for the budget seeker in me, Migita hit the mark dead-center. I still come here from time to time… without the school drama. :)

This is the best budget sushi place in the area. In fact, it’s the only budget sushi place on Montague Street. The closest budget sushi places are Iron Chef, a few blocks to the north, and Mitoushi on Atlantic, about seven or eight blocks away. Their food is pretty good. Not on a par with the authentic Japanese places or higher end American sushi places like Ki, but the fish is of reliably good quality. The fact that the place seems to be run by immigrants from Taiwan — the Chinese island province that was a Japanese colony for fifty years before the Chinese repossessed it after WWII, and which shows a strong Japanese cultural influence to this day — might have something to do with it. What the place does fall down a little bit on is their attempts at fusion cooked food(when I go to sushi places I try to order a few things outside of their standard raw fish menus to see what the quality of the kitchen is like; after all, sushi is a relatively simple concept that is more dependent on the quality of the ingredients than the skill of the chef, so the minimum baseline is not terribly difficult to reach), and also to sample any of the chef’s ceative efforts. The first thing I tried a special of the day, was parmesan mussels, which were greasy and flavorless, the sweet briny natural flavors of the mussels completely destroyed by the cheese and mayonnaise baked onto them. Total disaster of an attempt at an original dish. Some of their other cooked stuff were less than appetizing as well — their agedashi tofu is ungodly salty — like someone forgot to dilute the sauce with water to make dashi — and their shumai tasted pre-made. Possibly frozen and reheated as they are ordered. This has made me hesitant to try the rest of the cooked menu. Their mixed drinks are also pretty watered down. I would stick with the beer. But the inability to create good original dishes and the lack of willingness to booze up their cocktails don’t bother me all that much when rating a place strictly as a sushi bar. Their raw fish dishes are much better than you would expect for this price range, and an excellent value. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, and the neighborhood is very nice — you can come here for a nice relaxed stroll on the promenade to watch the sunset, then head over for some reliably good raw fish dishes for a great price — I recommend their chirashi for first timers — in a place that is usually not too packed, and quiet enough to talk at, with a nicely chilled bottle of Sapporo. To me that is just as the Unilocal rating says — «A-ok.» Oh yeah you also get a drawing for a prize if you spend a certain amount — I think $ 50 — and the prize is usually a beer or other drink for the next visit. I would come back anyway but it’s a nice little addition to the experience. Ask for the prize drawing!

Yesterday I went to try this place. I have never been there before so I wanted a different experience. As soon as I walked in it was EMPTY and really WARM. My first tip off was the music. It changed from rap to classical to pop music. What’s up with this place! I ordered the Sushi deluxe for $ 15. When I got it it was a very small portion and it tasted funny. I was shocked that for 15 dollars I got such a small meal. Now I know to stick with what i know,(Ozu, Iron Chef). Maybe it will be better another time. But for me it was a 1 star meal.

Great tasting sushi! The place isn’t overwhelming, it’s little, relaxed– service is on the mark, tons of choices!

This place is quite good. Expect an intimate non-packed setting featuring close nit tables. The service was great. The waiters are more than happy to assist with any questions about any of the food they offer. The sushi is nice and fresh. They have a long list of special rolls which they offer; we ended up ordering close to 7 rolls. All ended up tasting really good with the sake and sapporo.

Great sushi spot by the promenade in Brooklyn Heights in a very trendy area. The service was great, extremely friendly staff. They had a great drink menu with all different martini’s to choose from, only downfall was the lychee martini was really small, almost like a shot. For my second drink I decided to with a glass of wine which was the perfect serving. Onto the most important part, the sushi! They had a big selection of special rolls, we ordered a few including one that had sun dried tomatoes, everything was really delicious including our appetizers Tuna Tataki and Sashimi. The prices were also very good! I’d definitely come back again.

There is better sushi nearby, but Migita has some things its local competition does not. For one thing, it’s not crowded. I went on a Saturday night and it was nearly empty. This can be a plus if you don’t want to deal with noise or other diners. Maybe also a good place to take a date when you’re stepping on out on your partner. They had a very good and eclectic mix of music from the 60s playing, not just the usual songs from then you’re used to hearing. Maybe it’s a satellite station? Their bar menu tends toward party-style drinks – mojitos, pomegranate margaritas, etc. – that sushi places generally don’t traffic in. It seems like a good place for kids. Some sushi places are, some aren’t. The one other table with people at it during my visit had kids, and that seemed to be working out well. Friendly and professional staff. The sushi itself is perfectly adequate. They don’t have a lot of special rollls, I noticed. It’s pretty basic in both its menu and its décor, but the Montague Street setting and upstairs spot are beautiful, and its a relaxed place, kind of with a college-town feel.

Located in a cool area in Downtown, Montague Street this sushi place is worth coming to. If you are a fan of brown rice they can make any type of roll with it. Selection is fairly big for a small sushi place, service is good where we never had an empty cup of green tea. Which is great but after 10 cups of tea I made very good friends with their restroom. For appetizer I had edamami which came right from the steamer and was lightly salted, Yummy! Entrée I had a Philly Roll, Eel Avocado Roll and a Spicy Yellowtail Roll. All was made in good portion and none dry. As far as restaurant décor, don’t expect much except for a dim restaurant with somewhat wobbly tables(at least they have levelers for the table legs). Food, its worth checking out if you are around the area and have the craving for sushi.

There’s no atmosphere in this no-frillsy-feeling Japanese restaurant, so it was a good thing I was getting take-out. I was peeved by the half-sized miso soup, but the gyoza was still nice and crispy and there good quantity of good quality(moist!) chicken teriyaki too. I was still sort of unimpressed though. Since I have lunch every day in this ‘hood, I’m more likely to go to Tenda, where their bentos are better bang for buck, but I might return to try Migita’s sushi…

I luv Migata Sushi… I’ve been walking down Montague Street for a long time but has bypassed this Japanese cuisine gem for the longest. Until, my girlfriend introduced me several months ago, and I’ve been a fan ever since! I love their fresh salmon and brown rice with vegetables. I’ve also tried their Red Dragon roll & Excellent rolls, and it was delish… Their cocktails and plum wine are delish and affordable! And, lastly, their cheescake dessert was very flavorful! The staff is friendly, and the ambience is very laid back and cool…:)

Maybe the reviews on here made me think it was going to be better than it was but I would not say it was the best or near the best sushi I have ever had. Service was great, but that may have been because it was empty and we were a group spending a good deal of money. I was really attracted to the idea of brown rice sushi but I may consider just sticking to white rice from now on. Overall the preparation and taste of at least my sushi dish wasn’t as good as I expected. A bit messy, almost questioned the freshness of the seafood. Highlights: –brown rice sushi –good miso soup –brought us low-sodium soy sauce without us even asking –great variety –service –they have combos which are actually combos I would be interested in getting and did! Low-lights: –brown rice sushi –got one order completely wrong –something crunchy«like a rock» in one of the salad’s I will probably go back but I am going to try a different sushi restaurant up the street first. Then i’ll decide on which will become my staple sushi place for Montegue street.

The food here was AMAZING. I had brown rice with veggie gyoma and tofu teryaki. The tofu was light but filling, and came with sesame sauce. It added that extra flavor to it that made it perfect. The veggie gyoma tasted delicious. It had the right amount of everything in it, and really made me want more. The brown rice was just the way I liked it. It was seasoned well. The food was incredibly fresh. It was nice that you could watch them prepare your food. The atmosphere was also great. It seemed oriental, but not over the top, and the staff was VERY friendly. When you walk in, you’re greeted by a warm«Hello!», so you really feel welcome. They check on you while you’re eating, ask if you want more water, and make sure that if you want something prepared a certain way, they’ll make it. The service is really quick, and it doesn’t take longer than eight minutes to get your food. Try to get a seat by the window. The view is pretty, and you can also watch the fishes swim by in the tank you’re seated next to. I’m most definitely going back.

Good, solid sushi. The fish was fresh, the rice was cooked and seasoned well and the service was very attentive. Got a very nice table by the window to watch the Heights roll by. Try the live scallop for a special treat. The udon that my roomate got was under seasoned but stick with the nigiri and you can’t go wrong. I’ll be back soon.

A tasty gem in Brooklyn Heights, even if I’d never had the opportunity to explore much of BH, so adorable the tiny corner that we’d seen. We’d considered the outdoor dining cafes and restaurants up and down Montague St. but opted for lighter fare since the evening called for some serious salsa dancing. Turns out it was the right choice. Sushi is always a favorite for clean, solid protein(if they serve it that way, cross your fingers!). The service was good, the food creative and the establishment has a great scene setter out front with plants and the sushi bar. Oddly though the hosts do not seat guests in the front but packs us in at the back. Perhaps I wasn’t made up as stunning as I could have been, but really, who goes to a restaurant with an empty window? Barring that, there are some wacky combinations, like the Fire House Roll which involved shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and of all things, banana. Not to my taste certainly but possibly for more adventurous souls. And there’s a string of rolls where the chefs exercise a bit of innovation over the typical tuna roll, including the Crazy Roll, Brooklyn Roll and Red Dragon Roll. The Asian Fusion gets out of hand when they serve up rolls using(gross) brown rice. But to each his own. And I can say this about Migita bec/even with the fancy add-ons, the sashimi — the hamachi — is super fresh and excellent. So at the very least I’d trust the house to serve superb, basic fare. Whatever they do beyond that is“bonus” if that’s your thing, right? I had the hamachi — two glistening morsels of appropriate proportion — and the Saturn Roll, even more yellowtail with a light lemon sauce. So go for the fish and the neighborhood. If you want the fancy stuff, they’ve got a bit of that, as well as the organic/crunchy version of Japanese food. Overall, a solid neighborhood restaurant, a place to revisit if in the area.

This is the best sushi place in BoCoCa. The chefs are always smiling behind the sushi bar which is located by the front door — not somewhere behind, lurking in the corner. Somebody«always» immediately welcomes you right after you enter, they are«always» smiling, and kind. The food is marvellous, delicious and«always» fresh. They also do take outs, so you can just drop by, ask for something from the menu, grab it and eat it while walking on the Promenade. And the best part according to my «gut» is that they are authentically Japanese. This place never failed me.
