I ate at the Mofongo stand during the summer Smorgasburg at Brooklyn Bridge Park. After making several rounds to choose a stand for lunch, I picked Mofongo partly because of the long line — I mistakenly attributed its popularity to mean a better product. Sadly, I ended up waiting more than twice as long as my friends for my food and was disappointed with the taste as well. There were only two options offered: chicken or vegetarian. I opted for the chicken. The mofongo here was essentially a thick, tomato, almost gumbo-y soup poured over plantains smashed into a small bowl/cup. The long wait is a result of the time it takes for them to smash the plantains bowl by bowl. I remember the plantains were very dense and starchy, without much flavor. The soup on top is necessary to make it palatable. At the end when I was out of the soup, I wanted to throw away the plantains as I was tired of eating the tasteless, thick mush. However, I trudged on, motivated by the fact that I had paid $ 10 for a tiny bowl. The soup is topped by a small amount of chicharron. This helps provide a bit of crunch in the midst of a thick soup and dense starch, but not nearly enough. The placement of chicharron on top of soup is also a tad problematic as it begins to sop up soup and get soft right away. In the end, Mofongo NY made me regret my trip out to Smorgasburg and wish I had found a more authentic mofongo place, rather than choosing the convenience of a white-washed stand at Smorgasburg.

I purchased the pork Mofongo some time ago at the AfroLatino Festival, and it was amazing. The only reason why I dropped a star is because I recently trekked out to Brooklyn to visit their location and found out they weren’t there. They’re not opened right now, and I’m not sure when they’ll open again.

Went here during Smorgasburg. I enjoyed the mofongo with carne frita and the service was excellent. The owner is very nice. The only downside is that they didn’t sell drinks. Would go back and recommend.

I tried it for the first time in coney island smorgasburg and enjoyed it. They make it in front of you; smashed plantains seasoned with minced garlic and some salt with crispy pork on top… Awesome. You could try with pink mayo(ketchup, mayo, seasoning) or sriracha mayo;I had both on the side. Had tostones too(fried disc-ed plantains with garlic and salt) but wished I only ordered the mofongo cuz it filled me up quick. But the guy said it was a ten minute wait for the mofongo and I was hungry so… /rambling Anyway, try the mofongo, you won’t regret it.

I’m giving it only four stars because in my opinion it is a little pricey, but then again, it’s NY). Anyway, My boyfriend and I LOVED the chicken mofonGO. I have tasted many mofongo a around the city and this is the closest I have found to aPuerto Rican mofongo. I definitely will be back for more.

Idk what this is. But I’m POSITIVE this isn’t whatever people in the Caribbean actually eat. The starchy dry plantains stuffed at the bottom to pad your stomach tastes awful and the soupy tomato saucy chicken that fills this makeshift banana bowl has no taste… and the guy was fishing around in his bin for pieces of chicken that were about the size as my pinkie nail. The pork cracklings were also worth maybe $ 0.02, so I’m not sure why they decided to charge $ 10 for the chicken option($ 8 veggie). …what a waste of money.

I tried Mofongo NY for the first time, yesterday(In front of El Museo Del Barrio). I was pleasantly surprised… after all, it’s pretty hard to make Mofongo in a food truck type setting. It was definitely not the traditional mofongo, but it had a nice slight twist with delicious flavor. I have searched for the perfect mofongo, similar to ones my grandmother made in Puerto Rico, but I find that when I order at most NYC restaurants, they’re drowned in sauce to make up for how dry they are. Mofongo NY’s version had tasty & juicy masitas, freshly made platanos and fresh garlic. It was a nice and unexpected treat. Now while the line was indeed long, it was nice to watch as they shaped the platanos in the mortars. Very nostalgic. I’d return!

Good but nothing to write home about. Fills you up because of all the starch but if you want a quick good Caribbean bite go for it.

Just visit them at Smorgasburg in Dumbo. It’s not your traditional mofongo. They offered only two options… chicken or vegetarian. It was like a soupy tomato soup poured onto the smashed plantains in a cup. For a long line i thought i would be tasting some thing amazing but it was just okay to me. I read that there would be pork cracklings(optional) on it. Maybe i had to ask? *shrugs. For $ 10 it was kind if pricey but I guess it’s expected since its at a food fair.
