Yummy pasta and nice atmosphere! It’s close to my house. I like the food and they now serve wine! I love all these restaurants that are now in Bedstuy.

Update: this is a very sad update as I have to downgrade Sud. They have changed the menu. No more squid ink pasta and pastas are no longer their bread and butter. They made their name on pasta! They are now primarily serving pizza. However on the past few trips — the pizza wasn’t as good as it had been. Plus the tiramisu hasn’t been as moist… Finally, I recently tried the burrata and it was tasteless — sigh. Plus the salad we ordered was bleh. I don’t think this is their fault. It’s an issue with the market — since they need to save on costs and they will be utilizing less staff. Sad and unfortunate. I have hope that they will make a comeback one day. ________________________________ OLDREVIEW(5 stars) Alert: BESTHOMEMADETIRAMISUINNYC I realize that I may sound like a high-school girl gushing over a crush in this review — but I can’t help it. I LOVEEEE this place. It is one of my new fave dine-in restaurants in Bed-Stuy and they now accept credit cards(*swoon*). This review must lead with their T.I.R.A.M.I.S.U., which has got to be a family recipe that has been passed down. Alas, I have found a tiramisu with the *perfect* ratio of cream to ladyfinger to espresso. The ladyfingers were clearly soaked in espresso overnight, so they are expanded, light and fluffy. Plus, they add a splash of Bourbon. The Italian mokador espresso is very good quality, has a mocha taste and you actually see espresso runs on the plate after each bite! Finally, it is LIGHT. The cream does not take over like 99% of tiramisus that I have tried in NY. I dream about it as I type. Note: I tried it for the first time after realizing that Do or Dine only had Snickers Bars for dessert — it was serendipitous that Sud was so closeby — fate, if you will. Other reasons why I love this place? The overall quality and freshness of the food, the down-to-earth, funky, relaxed, nottryingtohard, bohemian, Brooklyn vibe. The romantic rusted chandeliers(be still, my heart), the pizza oven face… The last time I ate there we had the most perfect Italian meal(family style, of course). We usually NEVER get polenta. But for some reason, my spouse wanted theirs because he had an inkling. So we ordered the Polenta of the Day — with parmesan cream. It was decadent, but light. Creamy and moist on the outside, but firm on the inside. Complex yet simple. It was like I was back in a Venetian family-run restaurant from yesteryear. A must order. Next, the BLACKINKSPAGHETTIANDCALAMARIINSPICYSAUCE. It makes Dino’s version seem like McDonald’s. Just try it if you like these ingredients. The calamari was perfectly cooked, there was no fishy taste and the pasta was al dente. The sauce was spicy and made the dish pop. You know you are in a true Italian restaurant when the pasta is not inundated with sauce. We devoured this. And for the most unexpectedly exciting item of the meal. The margherita pizza. The server mentioned that they«are known for» their pastas and they are just starting to perfect their pizza game, as they have only been on the menu for a few months. Dear NYC Unilocal readers, I declare that Sud’s margherita pizza can be described as DiFARA-LITE. It had fresh, perfectly cooked bread, really good homemade sauce and the fresh Mozzarella was creamy, tasty and blended well with the cheese. They also give you parmesan on the side, which you must put on top — when you do so you may think you are eating a pie made by one of DiFara’s family members. It is a top-3NYC pie in my opinion. The meal ended with the Tiramisu. While sitting in the backyard, we stared into each others’ eyes… my spouse, I mean. Man, that meal was like a love potion. While Do or Dine gloats down the street like a 23 year old hipster with«in the moment», unique antics — Sud remains grounded, cool, confident, like a well seasoned, mature 36 year old, surrounded with love and recipes passed down from generations of family members.

I’m beyond pleased I came across this place. The bartender greeted you with a smile and friendly personality, conversation came easy. Chill interior with dim chandelier lighting, candle light and wood burning light from this awesomely crafted brick oven. There’s no shortage of art on the walls, and the back patio is incredibly charming with genius scaffold-plank bench work, christmas lights and real grape vine growing around the entire area. Complimentary bread & delicious olive oil. Prosciutto Arugula pizza prepared by the owner was absolutely amazing. Giuseppe truly loves what he does and passionately described the art of the pizza process starting from his imported Italian ingredients. An exceptional experience from start to finish. You’ll make new friends sitting at the full bar and a new place to call«My Italian Spot»!

The only place I’ve ever been that proudly advertises happy hour on their sidewalk chalkboard but only offers the deal to bar patrons and not those sitting at tables. Huh?

Last night I went here for the first time. Let me first say that the atmosphere is perfect. The lighting, décor is all spot on except for two things. a) The ATM sign is so bright. Why they don’t dim it out a bit is besides me. b) The TV is terrible. Why have a TV on in such a romantic place??? Aside from all this the major sticking point is that I am quite shocked at the portion sizes vs. the prices. I could not imagine a pizza being $ 25 and only coming with 4 small slices. The pizza was eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, garlic and asparagus. It was so small and to be honest I have had way way better pizza at Speedy Romeo in the neighborhood for half the price. The truffle cream pasta we got was also a super small portion and $ 19, although very tasty. I can’t imagine a place being this expensive when it’s in an area such as this. In addition they only take cash. That always irks me out. Are they trying to not pay taxes? Very fishy.

Man. We used to LOVE this place. Came back for the first time in 6 months, sad to see its gone to sh*ts. Must have changed management. Didn’t see any of the old people here. Go to saraghinas instead!

This guy! He created a small heaven in Bed-Stuy by simply putting together the right woodwork, the right lights and the right food… Great place for a date, but if you feel lonely you can still grab a seat at the bar and someone will engage in a nice conversation. Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs seems a great soundtrack for this place, but also any cool jazz would fit it like a glove. Don’t leave without a dessert! Vai Beppe, keep going!

Went back and Ryan brought me back to my first time when the owner served us. Kudos to him. I had a great time. The food was great and the vibe was spot on. Pasta was good and salad was fresh. They were friendly until the end of the night. Ryan saved the day. Thanks

Absolutely, without a doubt my favorite neighborhood spot. Cozy, romantic, candlelit dinners in a classic trattoria atmosphere with local art, a breezy bay window, exposed brick walls and a lovely back garden. Great Italian wines(try the Montepulciano) paired with deliciously simple and fresh authentic southern Italian pastas, crostini, salads, meat and fish dishes. The squid ink calamari pasta and rich eggplant rigatoni a la Norma are to die for. They are also amazingly good for events – we had my bridal shower here on a sunny June Sunday in their back garden. It was absolutely perfect – Tonino and Pepe worked with us on a great menu, and our guests raved about the fresh antipasti, lovely pastas and tiramisu. Plus with unlimited wine, no one’s glass was ever empty! Highly recommend!

I’ve lived around the corner from SUD since the fall, so I have no excuse for not dining here sooner. In my defense, they are cash only, but I guess I was too lazy to head to an ATM. I needed to get out the house and eat, and decided to give SUD a try. All of the previous reviews are spot on – this place is cozy, charming, and my meal was delicious. I had the black ink pasta with calamari and tomato – the pasta was cooked perfectly and while filling, wasn’t too overwhelming for a summer night meal. I came in with hopes of sitting at the bar, but I dined while the World Cup was still going on, and soccer fans had take all the seats. But the service didn’t suffer, and a gentleman who might have been the owner or the chef came out and asked how everyone was. Would love to go back and dine with friends or go again solo and sit at the bar with some wine.

My review is pretty much, «Why is this place not always PACKED?» It did take me forever to venture into the restaurant, but since then, I’ve been back many times and have never been disappointed. Everything on the menu is delicious. The brunch menu and the dinner menu — while small — only include delicious things. Who needs a huge menu with filler when you can have a small one with yum after yum? The Tagliolini, Pappardelle w/black truffle, and the chicken dish(which I can’t recall the name of) are delicious. The staff and owner are also super cool. Definitely would recommend… and bring CASH.

This little place is intimate with great service, good food and a quiet restaurant. All a win for a place in the city. Now, this place is cash only so that is a bit inconvenient especially if you want to go crazy and order up a bunch of things. So bring a decent amount if cash. We ordered the pear. goat cheese and honey crostini for an appetizer. That was ok to to good. Then we ordered the lasagna which was fantastic, they make it with burrata and it is rich and flavorful. Then there is a lobster pasta dish which is light and clean flavored. The fish dish was just baked/grilled fish. The service was warm and nice.

Absolutely amazing food. Every dish is well thought out and extremely tasty. Friendly staff and good service. Very calm atmosphere. Good for dates and family dinners. I went here with my aunt who is a pretty picky eater(meat, and starch, nothing green) and they accommodated… even though they do have amazing food and she’s truly missing out. They were polite and respectful about her requests.

My boyfriend and I finally just tried SUD after living around the corner(and peeking into their lovely backyard from our window) for over a year. We were celebrating a new job and came by early on a weeknight. The staff was really friendly and helpful without hovering too much, and pretty much everything on the menu looked great. We settled on the antipasto italiano, which I highly recommend. Great selection of cheeses and meats, with a decadent truffle-balsamic reduction and honey for dipping. And they were very generous with baskets of bread to go with. For entrees, I went with a spaghetti that came in a fresh tomato sauce – so good. My boyfriend really made the right choice by ordering a fish special. It was served in a caserole dish with tomatoes and a light sauce. Perfectly cooked. I definitely recommend both the almond cake and tiramisu for dessert – although the almond cake was a bit more of special treat since you don’t see that on every menu around. Can’t wait to go back!

It is not easy to find an Italian restaurant that doesn’t make me wish I had just invited myself over to my grandmother’s house for dinner, but Sud makes the shortlist. A girlfriend and I came for dinner on a Friday night, for some much deserved wine and grub. We were debating between Sud and Black Swan, and the warmth and relaxed vibe emanating from Sud won us over. The restaurant is cute and cozy. The fireplace and kitchen hutches in the back make you feel like you’re sitting in someone’s home, and the service is so friendly. We started with yummy(heavily poured) pinot grigio, and some complementary bread with olive oil. Despite the bread basket, we went ahead and ordered more bread to start — the crostini with taleggio cheese and house-made black olive tapenade. We were so pleased to find that the order came with four pieces of crostini — generous for $ 8! The crostini were savory with a little bit of sweet, just perfect to hold us over for our mains. The Sud menu is small, which I love. I subscribe to the philosophy that it’s better to do a few things very well then to do many things in a mediocre way. The menu has a pesce section, but it kind of just screams«order pasta!», so we did. I had the Rigatoni Alla Norma — fresh eggplant, ricotta salata and tomato sauce. The ricotta salata is salty and a little creamy, making the overall simple dish a little bit more complex and interesting. It was perfect. My friend ordered a pasta with veggies(I think spinach, mushrooms, etc.), garlic and olive oil. It was so simple and good. We finished with a decadent chocolate cake and were on our way. I expect this to become one of my neighborhood go-tos — the ambiance is perfect for conversation over dinner. Important to note: Sud is cash only, seemingly a trend in this neighborhood.

Unlike the other restaurants and bars that cater to the young and hipster loud crowd, Sud is a calm oasis in Bed-Stuy. It feels like a hybrid sports bar and restaurant(the TV and the ATM in the lobby feel so out of place against the otherwise rustic atmosphere) but we quickly discovered that it is a very low-key, quiet place to have a comforting meal and conversation. They have a small menu, but there are plenty of options when it comes to the appetizers and crostini. I was very pleased by the caprese salad — no balsamic, but they had an addictive pesto drizzle over the burrata that was very delicious. My main dish, the truffle tagliatelle, was also ridiculously creamy and flavourful, while the rustic«poor man’s pasta» my bf ordered was divine. I even had enough for leftovers, which extended the pasta bliss through the next afternoon! Unfortunately, the downside is that the winter temperature permeates very strongly in the restaurant — my bf kept commenting on how cold he was during dinner, and he’s usually a space heater in lambswool. We’re looking forward to the summer when we can return for good eats in a warmer climate.

Perfectly prepared pastas, friendly atmosphere, and nice selection of affordable Italian wines. I had the puttanesca, and the textures were just phenomenal. The sauce was a touch sweet for my taste, but overall it was wonderful. Also had a bite of my friend’s farro salad: so fresh and flavorful and just beautiful to look at. The roasted endive on the salad was especially delicious. The taste of sweet, oaky, high quality balsamic on the salad was lovely. Sharing the chocolate cake(very much a chocolate molten cake with its warm chocolate filling) with a scoop of nocciola gelato was a nice way to end the meal.

Someone will probably throw rocks at me next time I’m in the hood, due to my following statement: SUD was good but not amazing. The venue is lovely with a backyard, the food were very tasty and the service was friendly and unpretentious. I would suggest to skip assaggio di crostini, go for the insalate and pasta dishes. 3.25 stars. Cash Only P. S. If budget allows, I believe Locanda Vini e Olii( ) is a better choice for an Italian meal.
