If you like bland, flavorless food then this is the place for you. I ordered tacos each with a different one of their sauces, as well as a chicken burrito with cilantro lime, shredded cheese, and jalapeño slices. To start the tacos didn’t taste like much, they put TWO soft shells around a small amount of meat and filling. All I tasted was the shell, and that goes for both the soft and(soggy) hard shell. I had hope for the burrito, but honestly it was the same. The chicken was more like mush, there was NO sauce(even though I ordered the chipotle aioli). The rice was just regular white rice you’d get tossed into a chinese food order. And the cheese wasn’t even mexican spices, it was just plain old regular shredded mild cheddar. I’m not sure if I got jalapenos in my burrito or green peppers, because there was no kick, no spice. If you do order take out from here, make sure you have some hot sauce at home and slather it all over the food, it’s the only way you’ll get any flavor. There are better Mexican places in Bay Ridge, but if you’re on 86th St and need an approximation of Mexican food you’re better off going to Taco Bell, at least that food tastes like something.

I was so excited when this place was being built. Great name, I love tacos, awesome location. But… The cheese was velveta, the beans were somehow crunchy and mushy and the whole experience was reminiscent of Mexican food made by someone who thinks Kansas is near Mexico. I even have them a second try a few months later. Prices were a little more, food just as terrible.

What a Taco is down the street from me at work so I gave it a try over the summer and was not disappointed! I’ve tried the Carne Asada and also the Chicken Quesadillas and both are extremely good. You can taste the freshness in the ingredients and they are not too overly seasoned but just right. The owner also cooks the food which may speak for the quality of the food he puts out. The Carne Asada lunch platter, which comes with a beverage and a very good portion of food and chips & salsa, was only 9 bucks! Very good price with very good food equals a Very Happy Customer! Their breakfast is also very good too!

This is without a doubt the best place for Mexican food anywhere close to Bay Ridge. Everything’s fresh, and made right in front of you. Any questions, just ask, and the owner will gladly answer them. Great portions, really good prices, a bunch of specials. The place is clean with a really cool atmosphere. Netflix is usually running on a big screen with something fun, and it’s in a perfect location for people watching. I’d recommend the quesadillas, but like everything.

The tacos themselves were okay! I didn’t find them to be extraordinary. Just simple tacos for a pretty cheap price starting at $ 1.50. I do wish they had more options for their $ 1.50 tacos. Like say pork belly, or something different. I had breakfast tacos, and something pork tacos. The breakfast taco was mostly just eggs and onion I believe. There may’ve been cheese, I don’t remember. I would come back for tacos sometime if I crave it, but nothing here about décor, service or food struck me as out of the ordinary, so for me I can visit here or Taco Bell, or even get a gyro. The difference isn’t too big. But good to satisfy taco cravings in this neighborhood. The name though, What A Taco is actually my favorite part about this joint.

This is my favorite place to get a quesadilla in Bay Ridge. The lunch special is a ridiculous value; I get a Tilapia Quesadilla with a choice of 3 toppings, salsa, a side of chips and pico and a drink, all less than $ 9. The servings are very generous. I split my lunch special between to meals because it’s that much food. The ingredients are rich and flavorful. The service is friendly and fast. Stop by for Taco Tuesday’s for some delicious tacos too. I haven’t found a dish that’s a miss so far. This place is awesome.

Thought I try out this place being that it was so close to base. Didn’t find out until after I placed my order on seamless that they didn’t deliver to on base residents. Quesadillas was horrible but the Nacho Grande was great.

I order the veggie burrito bowl and boy was a big bowl. The price wasn’t that bad either only 5.50!!! It came with rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and guacamole. I couldn’t ask for nothing more. It was such a big bowl that I took some to work for lunch. I did not dine there so I can’t review on that. But I recommend this place!

The name of this place should be «what a waste of money». I ordered the chicken quesadilla and a beef empanada for almost $ 12. Everything was flavorless, which I can deal with if I put a little salsa on it but the nastiest part of this place is the soggy quesadilla filled with chicken cartilage. What normal establishment takes a whole chicken and chops it up with bones and cartilage, then put it in your quesadilla? Shredded chicken I’m cool with, but biting into cartilage in a quesadilla is disgusting. This place is like a truck stop, people just come to use the bathroom.

Wow, three bucks for the best shrimp tacos I’ve had in a long time. Chipotle sauce was super hot, incredibly amazing, lips on fire, nose running, eyes watering, I can’t wait to go back for more goodness. I was basically eating and running but I must come back to sample the rest of their menu. Yay, good Mexican in BK!

Had the burrito with beef. Very tasty and filling. My gf had a chicken quesadilla which was really tasty too. The woman behind the counter was sort friendly and it was a great price for everything. Would definitely go back!

Knew the food was going to be atrocious when the counter guy expressed that it’s a torta cause of the use of mayo. Have you heard anything more ridiculous? The sandwich was a sad, sloppy disappointment. What a taco? Ha! What a waste!

I am going to ride the middle on the review here as I think there is a need for improvement that the owner should really look at in other reviews and my review. There are a few things not working here : –The menu on the wall that is a chalk board at the register is really confusing. — The menu on the counter where the register is only had breakfast on it and is confusing. — The restroom says not working but people that work there are using it with a key(I get it being next to a bus stop, but come on) — The service is slow and there was only one other person in there for lunch. The food needs a kick up in flavor. maybe even the toppings or something needs some enhancement… I mean charge 25cents more for a Taco if it means better ingredients. What did work: –The place itself is hip and has a good feel to it but at the same time maybe missing its mark. — I felt the people that work there were nice but that does not makeup for slow service and food quality. — The Tacos were ok. we had a variety and the presentation to us at the table was great… it’s just not popping and I think that has to do with the garnish… needs more or cut it longer. Overall this place could be bumping and people could be lined up out the door. This requires maybe a new cook that can handle multiple orders and a menu that is not confusing and states in a orderly matter what items comes with what. There are so many things on there. the name is What a Taco. Make epic tacos your thing. work on the main item. focus on making 6 – 8 amazing Tacos and all the other stuff you can work in later. To be continued… if the owner takes some critique and knows I am not attacking but trying to give him a sense of what a customer is experiencing and is expecting.

The food here is amazing! Not only that but the prices won’t hurt Your wallet. I come here whenever I have the chance whether it’s for lunch or breakfast because it’s just my go to spot now. Definitely a good find since it’s near my school too !

This place is like an enigma to me — the first time I stopped by a couple months ago, they served me pretty mediocre tacos and the service fell short of what I would expect from a new, cool looking restaurant on a major strip in Brooklyn. I went back again to give it another shot, and then another, and then… I realized the food just isn’t good. There’s not enough seasoning, the food is cooked unevenly, the tortillas have no flavor to them and they totally skimp on cheese. With so many new restaurants and chefs doing cool things with tacos, it’s hard to keep patronizing a place like this that is not putting out good food even the classic way. Even if it’s centrally located and very reasonably priced. I absolutely love bay ridge so I hope this business finds its way and does well, but for now I probably won’t return.

So, before I begin this review let me remind all readers of this that I am a big foodie, and I love going anywhere from your neighborhood bodega to the nicest, Michelin rated restaurant. I’ve been to What A Taco on about 5 occasions, both before and after they were closed. I was inspired to write a review because the negative ones are SO off and don’t do justice to W.A.T. What a Taco is. It is your neighborhood bodega run by a friendly, hardworking Greek fellow who does his best(and succeeds) to provide hearty, flavorful Mexican meals. Are they what you’d get in Sunset Park? Probably not. But they’re delicious, delivered in a timely manner and they have more character than your typical Tex Mex meal. I’m a quesadilla gal myself so I stick with any variation of that and never go wrong! I like What A Taco and I give it 4 stars because it doesn’t lie about what it is — you want fancy, check out Dos Caminos, but you want a quick, to go or sit down meal because you’ve just had the worst kind of long day, go here! It’s right off the train, on the main strip and will be a quick, worthy meal! And one last note, it is very clean. I’m bug-a-phobic and have never noticed a single organism inside WAT aside from a human. It is also still open so go support them and eat up all they have to offer!

I’ve eaten here about 7 times now. I stopped by and noticed they were closed for vacation and under construction… and they cleverly hid something… beware! It’s one thing to be shut down and fix your mistakes. It’s another TOFLATOUTLIEABOUTTHESAFETYOFYOURESTABLISHMENT.

I didn’t know what to expect from this place. It’s fairly new and the reviews weren’t so hot but I’ve really wanted to try it, and I’m glad I did! I ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was fantastic. For $ 8 I got a HUGE quesadilla packed with chicken, beans, rice and cheese with tortilla chips and a drink. You can’t beat that, especially in Bay Ridge. The place is neat and clean and spacious. The staff is super nice as well. I’m very happy I decided to come in and I’ll definitely be coming back!

I was starving and this was closest place for me to eat at the time. I was walking any further until I ate. I just ordered the Friday specials. I got the $ 4 cheese quesadillas and the $ 3 chicken empanadas. I was not impressed and disappointed with the cheese quesadillas. Most places I’ve been to they would put different cheeses and they would put a lot in it. What A Taco didn’t put enough cheese and I think they used only one type of cheese. On top of that it tasted kind of bland. The chicken empanada had shredded chicken, corn, jalapeños, and onions. The empanada was also fried, in case you wondering. The emepanda was alright. Nothing special about it. It does have a spicy kick to it. Not crazy about this place, but it served its purpose of by dealing with my hunger. FYI: check in and get a free drink.
