Stupid place, needs to get with it and stop being cash only. I had an allagash white on fraught and it tasted very old. They are going for a hipster vibe and fail horribly.

I was on my way to The Druid about ½−1 mile further down, but decided to stop in here and the food in here instead. Food only, I did not drink. Burger was eh. Asked to be cooked medium, came out cooked extra-well done: dry and burnt. Other ingredients were fine, but a burnt patty that could barely be brought half-way back to life with sauces ruined it. (* = sampled from people I was with) Steak fries were okay, good but not spectacular. *BLT was great. They give you a truckload of fresh bacon(really, a lot). The ingredients are hot and fresh. Thumbs up *Fish and Chip also very good. Lightly battered, not over-salted, and cooked perfectly. Location is a little drab. Men’s bathroom is unfortunately positioned so if the door opens and you sit in certain locations you can see inside to people standing at sink/urinals. You won’t «see anything,» but not something you want to see when you are trying to enjoy a meal and/or drink. P. S. They should advertise«cash only» more clearly.

One of the best bars in Central, also steps from the T! They have a good atmosphere with pool and darts. My favorite part is their outdoor patio — so best when it’s not winter — because it’s absolutely beautiful with lights and it’s spacious CASHONLY but they have an ATM inside

Very popular bar frequented by many college students. Décor inside is nice and vibrant, but they have the lights turned down a bit too. There is a nice back patio, and together with 2 rooms inside it seems to be quite a lot of space. But it fills up, even on weeknights. I didn’t try any food, but the beer selection is reasonably large(15 on tap + some bottles) and also on par with Boston prices. No cards, cash only(so bring some bills). Unfortunately the 2AM closing time means they kick you out at 1:30 so they can clean up and leave themselves at 2AM. This is very weird to me, why not just change the official closing time?

I had high hopes for this to be the kind of neat dive that’s dirty only in the charming way, but I was honestly afraid to eat the food served to me for a couple reasons. My husband and I walked by this place a few times before deciding to go in. Yesterday we went for some afternoon beers and burgers to enjoy the patio. Upon walking in, I felt almost nauseated by a moldy corpse anus smell that seemed to stagnate in the bar area(s). I figured it was just due to the place being older and that the patio would be better. True — the patio IS better, but I wish you could walk directly back there without going through the bar itself to avoid the smell. The service was attentive, quick and polite. It seems like some other people who have come here maybe had bad experiences with service because they themselves are assholes and just solicit experiences like that. Anyway, I ordered a cheeseburger Medium Well and it came out pinkish-red, more like a Medium Rare. I would normally order a MR burger from anywhere else, but based on the smell of the place, I had sanitary concerns and wanted a more thoroughly cooked burger. I picked around it too much to send it back, and I kind of lost my appetite from it anyway, so I ultimately didn’t finish it. The steak fries were undercooked as well and tasted like. meh, mushed frozen potato. I would just advise against going for the food here. There were some families with very young babies in there. One of the parents plopped a baby on the pool table and let it play around. I really hope it didn’t get a disease.

A great place to meet up with friends in the summer. There is an outdoor patio, the food is quite good, and they have a good drink selection. I’m by no means blown away by The Field, but it’s a good option if you are looking for a drink and a bite in Central Square.

Rounded up for this one. 3.5ish. CASHONLY. Good basic cheeseburger for lunch. The Irish Pub atmosphere brings a good vibe. Solid service from a very kind waitress.

Decent place. Their bacon cheeseburger was pretty good! it was nice and juicey. And their fries were hot and not oily. their patio is pretty cool but it gets crowded fast. all in all a decent place for some bar food. Nothing special! The only knack I’d give it is that its cash only. Besides that its what you’d expect to have when you go to a bar.

Have been here a few times, and it’s alright. Right in the middle of the road. I had a steak tip salad the last time I was here. It was alright, but I asked for the steak tips medium rare, and the meat was straight-up raw. I hate sending things back, but I just had to. The waiter seemed confused and quickly lost his easy smile after this request, even though we agreed before the order that medium-rare is pinkish in the middle. Unless the menu prices were wrong, I was overcharged 50 cents for the meal. Oh well. The beer is good and the outdoor patio is pretty neat! Bathrooms are cramped, but it’s a bar, so I understand that. The inside room is very structurally disjoint: the room with the pool table always seems cramped and the other section also always seems cramped to me. I like that quality about the Field sometime, but it’s also something to note. The beer selection is good, not great, and the prices are cheap. I will be back again, but maybe just for drinks next time.

In 2008, ImprovBoston moved from Inman Square to Central Square. Before the move, I was worried that we wouldn’t find a replacement for our post show hang out. In Inman, we had the Abbey Lounge, then Bukowski. Where would we go in Central? The closest bar to the new spot was(still is) The Field. We got really lucky. Now, the Field is a second home. The Field is hands down, the best place in Central Square for a no hassle, casual beer /burger with friends. It’s cheap, there’s a large, hidden patio in the back and the staff is great. Also, as far as Irish pubs go, it’s authentic. I can tell how good a bar is by how diverse its clientele is. The Field is always a great mix of people from all walks of life. If you’re looking to catch up with friends, hoping to grab a Guinness with a perfect pour or trying to kill time in Central — stop at the Field. Chat up the bartenders — Eamonn and Gareth are great, friendly guys who will keep your glass full and your smile wide. If you’ve never been, here are some things you should know: 1) It’s cash only but there’s an ATM onsite. 2) It’s really busy on Friday and Saturday nights but most of those people don’t know about the patio which is through a door in the back room. 3) There’s a dart board and a pool table in the back room if you’re into those things.

I have been thinking about this review for a while, and have decided that the reason this place is rated so poorly by the general public is that the people are rating this place expect too much and are overly bourgeois. This makes sense to me; while Field is really just a fabulous neighborhood bar, it has the unfortunate location in Cambridge that attracts hordes of young people who leave mean reviews. I’ve been to Field twice now, and both were on magical nights where I made new friends or caught up with old ones, and the nights were lovely and balmy and the back patio was not too crowded.(Plus, the wood bench seating around the edges is really nice.) The beer is cheap; all of them are $ 6 which takes price out of your calculation. The choices aren’t plentiful, but hey, they run the gamut, and they’ve got beer that I like. It feels like a real dive too, in spite of the bright red shiny exterior that makes me think of fire trucks. People complain about not being able to play the games, but really, they are in the wrong. This is not a bar about playing games. It’s about meeting random people you don’t know, about talking, about being casual and hip. In a divey setting. (The casual and hip playlist made that clear — I’m really into the playlists at some of these Boston bars and restaurants.) Anywhere else, I’d say this was probably four stars. But its sheer uniqueness to the Boston bar scene earns it the final star for a total of five.

I had a great experience at the Field. It is a no-frills Irish Pub in the center of Central Square. It is a great place to start your night out with friends. The bartenders were friendly and the drinks were pretty good. I liked how they sold individual bags of chips behind the bar, which would be nice for when the kitchen closes and you want something to munch on! I went on a rainy night, however they have a decent sized patio in the back of the bar that had a great ambiance. The fence was bordered with Christmas lights and there were plants to give it less of a city feel. As an FYI it is CASHONLY, however there is an ATM inside.

This place is fine. Reasonably price, good crowd and decent selection. I’ve never had any food there but have always had a good time when I’ve gone with friends. The layout is a little odd and be sure to remember that it’s cash only!

Unassuming bar in central square with a huge beer selection and and easy-going vibe. It’s great for grabbing drinks with friends, but It’s rather small so on the weekends it gets extremely crowded. Attracts mostly hipsters and MIT/Harvard nerds(so basically 80% of cambridge residents between 20 – 35). I’m mostly dinging it because of it’s overcrowdedness and ITDOESNOTACCEPTCREDITCARDS. I get it, I get it, you have a principled stance against the behemoth corporations that are the big credit card companies sucking up percentages of your profits… I find it even more morally reprehensible to have an ATM machine that charges you $ 3.50 just to get your own cash out of it. We all know how overpriced all alcoholic beverages are in general… Just get over yourselves.

The Field. A solid bar in Central Square. You’d probably think its a 3 star place. They sell beer some of it is good, some of it is eh. People pack it in, they chat its fun. But the Field has a few hidden gems. One. Darts and pool. Yes please. Two. The back patio. Its really nice in the summer(though be warned, its a city back patio, nothing too crazy). Come to the field, it is a bar.

I love this place! Problem with it the cash only selection. hence the 4⁄5. Right by the red line too! They have nice cheap beer, with a nice selection of appetizers to choose from. You can play pool, darts and watch games on their tv!

Tons of fun for the last game of the world cup. We were worried because the porch only has one TV that isn’t huge, but somehow we were able to see, and I didn’t hear anyone complaining(not about that, anyway). Servers were amazingly fast for the number of people and funny(when I asked if he was still working because he wasn’t running he sighed and said ‘i guess’ with a smile; later when I ask who he wanted to win he said he just wants it over so he can go home) Great beer selection as well.

Cash only, not advertised well. They do have an ATM, but it does catch you off guard that they’re cash only. Décor was very nice, but we were here late, so I couldn’t check out any food items. Easy to get to from the Red Line, no regrets there. Definately worth the ride after a show in Cambridge/Boston proper. No Yuengling on tap, but Gansetts are cheap, and they’ve got Irish Cider.
