I have a terrible experience every time I go here and yesterday was the final straw. The coffee is fine, but the staff are incredibly rude, miserable, thoughtless and SLOW. It just ruins the«Oh lets go for coffee experience» every time. This is going to sound petty but this could probably all be fixed with a smile and a «be with you in a minute». However, they just look at you as if you are just another annoyance in a line of annoyances. There are plenty of other good coffee spots on the Mall, I would recommend skipping this one.

Cozy, friendly, and warm space. I came here for a work session on an early Friday afternoon and it was the perfect ambiance to grab a spiced tea, hunker down, and get to business. The noise level was normal volume and the wifi was great. The barista at the bar was very approachable and easy to talk to. She was helpful in making suggestions on different types of teas and coffees and made it easy to make a selection. I would definitely return based on the nice interaction I had with the staff here. The space is well kept, spacious, and offers plenty of seating options. There is a back room and several arm chairs to lounge in. Make sure to check the entire space for seats before settling. Oh, and for those who love game boards a few of the café tables by the bar have built in back gammon and chess/checker boards.

Sunk down on a college sofa. *probably can’t get back up* lol Having our first date since summer Having a Chider and a special concoction by the lovely barista! I am so greatful for today! I love that we can spend sometime together. It’s great to write reviews. But it’s even better to find gratitude in the simplest of things. I love my life! Thank you.

This little coffee shop is the perfect place to relax in the afternoon. The atmosphere makes this place great. Two large rooms with tables and couches and a fireplace that is low key and quiet. All of the beverages they offer seem pretty reasonably priced. They have a few«special» frou frou drinks to satisfy those with Starbucks tastes and plenty of the usual coffee house drinks like flat whites, cappuccinos, chai tea, etc. Did not try the food but it all smelled delicious. Definitely will come back to try it if I’m ever at the downtown mall

Giving them 3 starts, not for the coffee(which was good) or the food(good croissants), or the interior(attractive, well lit, warm on a chilly morning. No, 3 stars only for one simple reason: the menu specified a 16 oz. of coffee is 2.50; I was charge 3.50 for a refill in my own cup. Maybe it was an honest mistake, but when I asked«are you sure», the clerk replied, «yes.»

Had a great al fresco breakfast here on a beautiful and mild weekend morning. The servers were polite, the food delicious, and we loved starting the day here :) Goodness.

Let me first start off with saying«wow». This place was amazing. It makes starbucks look like a joke. The owners are also very kind people. I stumbled across this place when I went to go see my cousin graduate from UVA at Charlottesville. Didn’t know much about the area but after we ate lunch we decided we wanted a coffee and desert from a different restaraunt. We decided to go to Java Java with our family(we were a party of 12 and we got comfortably in this restaraunt). I got the chai latte and a lemon tart but mind you I was with a lot of people so I practically tried everything on the menu. Everything was so good! I didn’t have to add any sugar to my chai latte because it was just right — not too sweet either. I also really liked how the place was set up. Very cutesy!

Java Java has been my favorite café on the downtown mall. Good seating areas inside and out. Free wifi. Most importantly good coffee and made good consistently. However during a recent visit the baristas were conversing among themselves so loud, louder than all the customers combined. This is diminishing my fondness of this café.

My favorite part about Java and Java is definitely the environment. The mismatch sofas and bookshelf and overall living room-like decoration is homey making it an ideal study spot. The people who go there are generally quiet and focused and all the times I’ve been there’s been at least two tables open. The staff is also welcoming, patient(I take a long time to decide), and mindful. I’ve had the pomegranate and acai green teas and enjoyed both. I believe all their teas and coffee are organic and fair-trade. I also tried the hummus plate and found it both filling and tasty! I highly recommend it for a snack or light lunch. It comes with about 2÷3−1 cup hummus, sliced cucumbers, bell peppers, a handful of pita chips, and carrots. And an olive in the center of the hummus(:

I needed place to work for three hours, and this place was right near my lunch spot. It’s a very cozy place with tables, arm chairs and couches and what I saw to be shelves with books. There’s outdoor seating and also free WiFi, which I needed, but you have to ask for the password. I also really enjoyed the music they played, which was a classical version of all genres of music. I only rate it as A-OK because of the coffee. Perhaps it would’ve tasted better if it was loaded up with milk/cream and sugar, but I like mine black or with minimal milk, and it was far too bitter, like it had been sitting out since the morning. I also didn’t get the most friendliest vibe from the woman I gather to be the owner. I honestly would’ve bought a small treat in addition during my stay but I was a bit turned off.

The coffee tastes fine. I like Starbucks better. But, it’s the ambiance that has me rating this establishment at 4. Located close to the end of the DT mall, it has lot of comfy sofas, and chairs inside. Chess boards too if you are into that. I haven’t had the baklava in a while, but that’s pretty good too.

My husband and I went to Java Java for the first time today after peering into Mudhouse and seeing that it was once again too crowded to find a seat. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Java Java may be the ideal coffee house to study at in Charlottesville. The coffee I ordered was great and my husband really enjoyed his double espresso. The employees were also very attentive to the cleanliness of the building and were friendly towards customers. However, I think that the best thing about Java Java was its atmosphere. The music especially was charming and peaceful, the seats were cozy, there were outlets to plug in electronic devices, and there was plenty of room. We will definitely be coming back to Java Java again soon.

The coffee is always excellent, and the atmosphere is far more conducive to working than the Mudhouse. It’s very soothing, and you don’t feel as crowded, even when the place itself is busy. I usually always try the featured drinks, which they change monthly I think, and am always happy with their creativity and deliciousness. The food is also good; I usually get a turkey and cheese panini with a side salad, and the salad is fresh and crisp, and the sandwich filling. Hands down it’s my favorite coffee place in Charlottesville.

This place is great. It has good coffee and good breakfast bakery items. The staff was extremely nice. As long as their isn’t a Starbucks on the mall, this is my go to place for coffee in the AM. Even if there was a Starbucks, I would probably go here anyway.

I have one complaint but this applies to all of Charlottesville: why do all of the coffee shops close so early?! Where is a law student to go? Other than that, Java Java is terrific! The hot chocolate is sooo creamy and delicious. They play peaceful music and there are tons of couches/armchairs to relax in(that you deceptively can’t see from the window). I tried Mudhouse the other day after seeing so many good reviews on Unilocal, and having many locals recommend it — it was a zoo — barely any soft chairs, people crammed in tiny tables, and the music was so loud I couldn’t hear what my friend was saying at a normal volume. I don’t know why Mudhouse is the default reco from everyone, I will be recommending and going to Java Java.

Stopped in during a chilly morning after a run — it was recommended by a fellow teammate of mine( ) and since we were about to spend a few more hours outdoors working at the holiday market, I opted for a hot gingerbread latte. The drink was made well, and the store itself was very cozy. I usually opt for Mudhouse but was pleasantly surprised at the ‘cuteness’ of this café.
