The platters are great and have a lot of food on them so come hungry! I got the pulled pork platter which comes with hush puppies, chips made in house, and one side(I tried the macaroni and cheese). They have a variety of different barbecue sauces to choose from as well. The seating is sparse but when the weather is nice there is more room outside. The staff was very accommodating and excited we were there. All around a great experience!

They prepare their brisket in a skillet. If you eat a lot of barbecue, that’s probably all you need to read. For other folks — this is a barbecue Cardinal Sin, and I watched in horror as they did it. If you’ve had enough brisket to distinguish between between good brisket and bad brisket, you know that chewy, rubbery brisket is always bad brisket. Their brisket is sliced, not pulled, which is a bad sign to begin with. Generally, you only slice brisket if you haven’t slow-cooked it long enough for the connective tissue to break down to the point where it can be easily pulled apart with a couple forks — meaning it’s already likely to be chewy and gristly. Brisket needs low, indirect heat(and preferably some smoke), not high, direct heat. That’s for bacon. The one, sure-fire way to make sure you get chewy, rubbery brisket is to cook it like it’s bacon. And, unfortunately, that’s what we unwittingly ordered a few platters of. I don’t know, maybe ran out of the good stuff by the time I got there or something and just pulled some fridge meat out for us. But that certainly wasn’t worth $ 12 a plate. The homemade thick-sliced chips were good. Everything else(mac & cheese, pulled pork, and hush puppies) was okay — not great, but also not pan-seared brisket. The staff is nice and the space is pretty cool, so that earned it the extra star. Might give it another try in a few months — there’s certainly potential here.

Delicious! My boyfriend and I were in Charlottesville over Valentine’s weekend and we’re looking for a non-chain BBQ restaurant. We were not disappointed here! I ordered the fried chicken which was made to order. It had about a 20 min wait, but it was worth it. I also asked for 2 white meat breasts which usually costs an extra $ 1 but the cook told the lady taking my order not to worry about it. I appreciated that even if it was only $ 1! My boyfriend got the beef brisket sandwich and ate every bite. We even got a shirt and a mason jar cup that had their logo on it as a souvenir. The only reason I took off a star was due to lack of seating and atmosphere. Small bar seating for maybe 8 – 9 people that gets crowded when people come in to order. Small outdoor seating but since it was winter sitting outside was out of the question. OVERALL delicious BBQ!

Amazing BBQ and Brisket, we absolutely loved it. Quaint little place, not a ton of seating indoors but they make up for it with outdoor seating. We will be returning the next time we make it out this way!

I got a brisket sandwich, homemade chips and tea. The brisket did not have pink smoke rings you want to see that are characteristic of good Texas style brisket. The flavor was pretty good and the sauce was really good. I would definitely be interested in trying their pulled pork next time I am through.

A platter comes with a fantastically large amount of food. I got the brisket and bbq and with the sauces everything was. great! Baked beans are stewey and delicious, and green beans are soft with bacon bits inside. Hushpuppies are also whopping huge. My only that the meat is drowning in oil and grease which is to be expected. I just felt like there was more than usual. But either way, a must try!

Fast service, good food, 4 options for sauces. I ordered the pull pork platter, I was impressed with the portions, needed a to go box(there was so much food). The platter was good, hush puppies cooked just right, I was not a fan of the Mac and cheese but everything else was great. Will be my go to place for bbq!

Very good BBQ joint off 10 St. Parking lot is virtually non-existent so you’ll basically park at the apartment complex’s lot which is right next door. Guy working in the store said that we wouldn’t get towed so we assumed it was safe to park there. There’s limited seating inside and a few tables to sit at outside(which I wasn’t about to do in boiling hot summer Cville weather) Ordered the Pulled Pork platter($ 10) and the Brisket &BBQ platter($ 12) which came with beef brisket and pulled pork. We asked for a bun for both platters. Both platters were quite delicious! The four sauces Red Hub offered were ranked from mild to hot with one«sweet» Red Hub sauce. The pulled pork tasted amazing and was definitely boosted with the mild sauce that I tried. The pulled pork meat was quite juicy and not at all dry. The beef brisket was also very tasty, though a tiny bit chewy, which isn’t that unexpected since it was very fatty. The bun was toasted perfectly so it was just the right amount of softness to complement the meat. Each platter came with chips, a container of slaw, and two hush-puppies. As sides, my platter had baked beans, and the brisket platter had green beans. I liked the chips the most out of the platter sides because they were perfectly crispy with just the right amount of crunch. I believe the chips had some sort of creole seasoning, but I could be wrong on that; I just can’t pinpoint the precise seasoning on the chips. Whatever it was, it was ONPOINT. The slaw, on the other hand, had an odd sort of bbq tangy taste to it which might have been good as a concept, but left the slaw tasting really weirdly acidic. It was probably due to an excess in vinegar. Not my thing at all. The two hush-puppies also tasted really good with the honey dipping sauce, though I would have liked more than two. My baked beans tasted really awesome and exactly how any good baked beans would have tasted with a nice BBQ taste. The green bean side also tasted really good because it also had an unusual twist of having bacon bits mixed within it. Fair warning if you don’t like bacon bits in your green beans but I mean, who wouldn’t? My only criticism of the Red Hub platters would be that the sandwiches seemed –really– greasy. Like unusually greasy and dripping with oil. I totally get that it’s the nature of bbq/soul food to have a lot of fat in it, but these sandwiches were dripping all over the place which is something I haven’t seen at Ace or Belmont. All in all, however, I really loved the food at Red Hub and you get a LOT in your platter for the price you pay! Would definitely recommend!

I took my father to Red Hub today as a Father’s Day present for lunch. When we walked in we were both having difficulty deciding … everything they list is the type of food that my father adores! He ordered the hush puppies to start off with and they dropped in the corn meal mixture before we were done ordering. They were served with a little maple syrupy dip kind of thing that really gave them a chicken and waffles kind of feel. We both ordered a pulled pork sandwich(after the cashier recommended the brisket or the pulled pork). It comes with seasoned fresh homemade potato chips … delicious. The slaw was on the side, but easily added to the sandwich, though it was a small amount. I got two sauces, the«Red Hub Red» and the«Carolina Mustard» … both were good and I’m looking forward to trying the New Orleans bourbon sauce next time I come by.

The pulled pork was quality, I can’t argue with that. Moist, with a little fat. That’s where the positive ends, sadly. With the pork platter, you get 2 hush puppies(2…), a tiny smidgeon of slaw(3 bites), and a side. I had the red beans and rice. Absolutely tasteless. I also asked for a bun with the platter, which other reviewers described as lightly grilled. What I got was a bun pulled from a bag. They then filled the rest of the box up with chips, not sure why. I didn’t order them. To top it off, everything was cold. If you’re going to keep your lunch counter open until 3pm, keep the food hot. Oh, and the sauces are boring. The low country sauce tastes like store-bought mustard and the New Orleans tastes like Tabasco. I’ll be taking my business back to Ace and Belmont, where I can expect delicious, hot bbq every single time.

Charlottesville is a great place to live because there are almost as many BBQ joints as Starbucks in the area. A coworker and I decided to try Red Hub for lunch yesterday. Parking is limited, the space is tiny, and there’s no air conditioning(no complaints here but just a heads up for new customers). It was 90 degrees outside yesterday and about 10 degrees *warmer* in the building so we decided to get it to go and eat at the small tables outside. They have a Lunch Counter Menu and a Carryout/Catering menu. The lunch menu is fantastic, we both ordered the pork platter with different sides. My friend asked for a container of Lexington sauce to go, and I thought they put one in my platter box too… to my horror, I discovered I just poured maple syrup all over my BBQ! Totally my fault, I can’t believe I mixed them up but they were the same color! After I quickly ate the top layer of BBQ so the maple syrup wouldn’t soak through(who knows, maybe that will be the next food trend?), I was able to enjoy it, and it was delicious! Very flavorful and juicy! Now let’s talk sides: Faves: Hush Puppies and Hand Cut potato chips were fried to perfection. Wish I had read the Unilocal reviews earlier so I had realized the maple syrup was dipping sauce for the hush puppies ;) My friend loved the Baked Beans because they were definitely homemade and had a thick texture(not just Bush’s Baked Beans from a can). Mac n Cheese was a solid choice too. Meh: Neither of us were wild about the slaw, I think because the cabbage was so finely minced. Excited to go back for a carry out order sometime to try the fried chicken! They also have local beers on tap.

I stopped in for lunch cause I’m a total sucker for Cuban sandwiches. Red Hub did it up! Their pulled pork combined with the sliced ham was awesome. My only complaint was the slaw. The cabbage was so finely minced, that it was overwhelmed by the vinegar.

Very cool little spot… a little off the beaten path but very close if you’re staying at the Hampton Inn like we were. The owner was a great guy and the food was delicious(and reasonably priced). He also honored the check in deal for a free lemonade which was also really good(albeit very sweet). Definitely check this place out if you’re in the area, you won’t be disappointed. Great local business to support.

Found this place on a quick Memorial weekend trip to Charlottesville. Saw that it had some great reviews — and people weren’t lying! Unfortunately they were out of pork and brisket — or so he originally said. When I mentioned that my girlfriend really wanted brisket, he said«Oh, I can make the brisket sandwich for her! Just not the platter.» Not sure why that happened, but still, it was worth it. Definitely try their mac n cheese as well, I was a big fan. Their Lexington(vinegar based) BBQ sauce was my favorite. The Red Hub BBQ sauce was a lot sweeter, but still worth a taste. Their fried potato chips were a bit soggy, but had some great flavor — probably just needed to be a bit crispier. Safe to say that it was certainly worth the trip!

Absolutely fantastic food. Even the chicken fingers were great. The BBQ& brisket platter is a great deal and a way to try two different styles.

Highly recommend the pulled pork platter. I’ve been there three times now and I keep getting the same thing, so that must say something! The platter comes with chips, a side(Mac n cheese is my go to) and hush puppies(which are insanely good!). The staff is incredibly friendly and it’s a convenient walk from the corner and the UVa hospital. Only downside is that there isn’t much for inside seating; however, I heard wind that they might have a patio in the spring/summer time. If this is true, that would be awesome!

Favorite new place in Cville for lunch! Ham biscuits with pear butter, Cuban sandwich, and hush puppies with maple syrup on the first visit. All great! Friendly service. Limited on site parking. Plenty of street spaces though. Definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been.

This review is easy to write. Just had a big fat pulled pork sandwich and it was damn good. You know what got me? Half way through it I realized the how delicious even the dang bun was! I’m not kidding. It was lightly grilled which created a wonderful combination of texture and flavor as the sauce soaked into it. They could have pulled a bun out of a plastic bag but didn’t. The meat was perfect — moist, flavorful and plenty of it. Half an hour later and my mouth still has that lingering taste of comfort-food satisfaction. The sides were very good too. I recommend the macaroni and the Louisiana slaw, and the special recipe sauce for dipping the hushpuppies was yet another special touch that shows these guys understand the difference. And they have atmosphere if you know what I mean, like a BBQ place should have. These guys got it going on.

Red Hub proves that simple fare does not equate to bland or boring. Today, I ordered the barbeque sandwich platter– a real delight. The meat was tender and flavorful, even before the addition of sauce. The accompanying«chips» were actually home-made with a wonderful blend of crispy edges and real potato tenderness. The hush puppies were light and tender, not the grease-laden lead weights found elsewhere. A unique slaw added a slightly sweet kick to the sandwich with just the right amount of heat. I couldn’t resist picking up a logo mason jar drink cup filled with lemonade. Next trip, I may need to get the t-shirt, as well. There will definitely be a next trip!
