Yama Sushi

Stopped in based on the reviews of Unilocal and was very satisfied! The Waitress seated us promptly and took our order and the sushi chef was very pleasant and quick. The sushi rolls we ordered (Spicy Girl and Volcano) were absolutely great. We were amazed at the actual size of the volcano roll, it was like a jumbo roll! The more the merrier, lol. Next time the chef told us to try the fire and ice roll… I can’t wait!

I am not from here. I only visit once a month so I really rely on reviews.
I just had dinner here based on the reviews. I actually ate at nama sushi last night and gave them 4 stars. This place blows them out the water even though nama has a nicer atmosphere.
First off… it’s in the sketchy strip mall next to the dollar store. As I was walking up to the door I almost turned around as I saw the gaudy pink interior. I’m so glad I didnt.
The wait staff are super nice and attentive. They came back multiple time but not too often to be annoying.
The yellowtail jalapeño… OMG. This is the best sushi dish I’ve had… ever. I will now spend the time at home craving this. I don’t eat roll eat sashimi and sushi so i can’t comment on their rolls, but i saw them come out. They are really big compared to most places. This seasoned sashimi is the best I’ve ever had. Soy, yuzu, masago, and a thin sliced jalapeño somehow were perfect together. Its… awesome.
I had sashimi the night before so I decided to have steak hibachi. I had hibachi at ninja hibachi… this place is superior. The portions are almost twice what you would get st ninja and it was only 12.95. I asked for medium rare and it came out cooked perfect. I couldn’t even finish it next time I’m going to actually have to ask for half the rice.
Seriously the exterior/​interior appearance of this place doesn’t do it justice. I’ve found that to be true about most places around here. I only visit suffolk/​chesapeake once a month and this area looks one step away from a walking dead city. Ono Hawaii bbq is another great example of a hidden gem. Give this place a try. I actually think I’m gonna eat here again for lunch before my drive home tomorrow.

Delivery was way faster than expected. I ordered the steak hibachi dinner & cheesecake. The steak was cooked as I requested & the cheesecake was fried! Yes. Just yes. I was a little worried about the price but you get a lot of food. I’m an eater & even had leftovers. Customer service was also exquisite. Really nice people.

My husband and I came here thinks my it was one of the Yama chain places and it wasn’t. This place was way better. Great food and service. The price was great and I recommend the money bags for an appetizer. We will definitely come back.

Hands down one of my favorite Asian restaurants in the area. The food is really amazing and the management is very kind and courteous. My dad often orders from here and so do I. Whenever I want some tasty food I go here! You really can’t go wrong with the hibachi dinner or the chicken teriyaki meal. The portion sizes are filling and the food is fresh. Oftentimes I cannot eat the whole meal in one sitting so I save it for late, but the food is still good even the next day! I really recommend this place. Really love it!

Best sushi around. Not a lot of business because it’s still new and not in the best location for business. But always a pleasure, very fast and friendly service.

This place is a hidden gem. The sushi and food are always fresh and delicious! Best sushi around the Portsmouth area. Very friendly service too!

I love this place!!! We have ordered food from here tons of times and never disappointed. Sushi is always fresh tasting and super affordable! Their lobster hibachi is a favorite! This place is a must!!!

Love this place. It’s nice that I can order my food and it is ready so quick! Everyone that works here is very nice and friendly. Came in to eat with my husband and daughter one day as a sit down and the waitress was very sweet to my little girl. Wonderful place to go and I will definitely be back :)

The food is great and service is best, I like Yama, be sure I will came back.

They have some specialty ones that aren’t on the menu. Try the Fire & Ice roll! Downside, no alcoholic beverages.

First off service was great. That’s about the only thing though. Who skimps on rice? I get when you go for lunch specials you will get a smaller roll but some of the roll didn’t have rice around it???
How about a crunchy roll with no crunch? WTF. Not sure how this place has many positive reviews… I have better sushi at supermarkets.

So… I have worked over 10 years in my parents asian grocery store. I have worked over 5 in a Japanese restaurant owned by a Japanese lady and over 3 in a Thai/​Japanese restaurant owned by a Thai family. Moral of this intro is that I know food and this place is now my new favorite place in town. :)

Awesome! I was hesitant because of how it looked outside, but Yama was great. The only sushi I have had that was better cost 3 times as much!

Great nigiri and rolls. The fish is very fresh and the staff is great. I have been there multiple times and the food is always great.

This place is always a great place to dine. The food is amazing, the service is always great. But the food is So Amazing! They also have delivery!

My first time at Yama Sushi was the one on Volvo Pkwy and I didn’t review it but it would’ve got 5 stars on customer service and great fresh food. Then I came to the one one Western Branch Blvd and I am disappointed. The service was very good but the food was not. I ordered the shrimp tempura, philly roll, spicy tuna and miso soup. It was not fresh at all. I don’t know what else to say. I’m seeing all these good comments but I really can’t make the connection. I will try again, maybe today was just an off day

Great people, great food, great prices!
If you are in the mood for sushi or thai or hibachi then Yama is the place for you! They have some of it all! The food is excellent at a very reasonable price. The staff is friendly and attentive.
Please make sure that you go there so we can keep this hidden gem in business!
