Sammy’s Red Hots

Overall a pretty bad experience.
First, the people running the store were super irritated with me. I wanted 2 dogs, and there was some confusion as to whether I was ordering a #1 (2 dogs, fries and a soda) or a #2 (1 dog, fries and a soda). Ok, fine, stupid me for not identifying this «who’s on first» style situation sooner. Then, the exact same situation plays out again with the guy in line behind me. «I want 1 dog.» «A #2?» «No, 1.» «That’s 2.» Hey, here’s an idea. Since your staff gets irritated with every single customer about this, why don’t you just change your #1 special to have 1 dog, and your #2 special to have 2 dogs, and save yourself the hassle?
Second, I ordered Chicago dogs and what I got was not Chicago dogs. I’d expect this kind of thing in Ohio or Indiana, but not within the city limits of Chicago. A Chicago dog has a poppy-​seed bun and uses celery salt. Sammy’s used a plain bun and celery seed, which is way overpowering compared to celery salt. I don’t know how one even makes a mistake of this nature, especially when you’re running a hot dog shop. It makes me wonder if they’ve ever tried their own hot dogs. So, fine. You have to scrape off all of the celery seed or that’s all you can taste.
The one bright point is that the food was pretty cheap for Old Town, even considering that I flung the cold fries into the garbage uneaten. Still, I won’t be going back to Sammy’s in this life or in any other.

I just don’t get all the negative reviews. I always order the #2 Special: Chicago style hotdog, fries and a fountain drink for $ 3.99 plus tax. The fries are handcut, properly salted and a generous portion. The hotdog is tasty and the ingredients fresh. Only ding is the lack of a sesame seed bun, to make it an authentic Chicago dog, and plain relish instead of the neon green kind. Also no celery salt, but still a solid meal and a great value.

Woof– what a bad purchase. The fries were old, inedible and gross. And the burger bottom was falling apart when I opened it. The whole experience was not worth the money. Ew!

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. Terrible food, when they delivered my food it was the wrong order, and they charged me an extra $ 15 for delivery that was not part of the charge I was initially presented with ($ 5). When I called the restaurant to tell them that they delivered the wrong thing, they argued with me. Three people argued with me that the salmon I ordered was supposed to be white… They definitely sent me catfish because I’ve had catfish before so I know how it looks/​tastes. Not to mention what they did send me was repulsive and I threw it away. Thankfully I ordered through GrubHub and they were able to handle the situation for me and get my money back.

This place was really good! We got the grilled chicken sandwich with cheese, 1 polish dog, and 1 regular hot dog. The regular hot dog was just short of amazing! My favorite item personally and the chicken sandwich also tasted very good and also pretty fresh. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is because the fries were a teeny bit greasy for my taste and we ordered cheese with the fries which we later found out was never given to us… so that was kind of disappointing. As far as hot dogs go– you can’t go wrong! Also, all meals come with fries and a drink for free which is cool.

Try to order food from here the people that work there were so rude. They hung up on me yelled at me and all I asked for was the price of my order and how long will be. I’ll never ever order food from there again. There are way too many places in the city of Chicago for restaurant to act that way towards their customers absolutely ridiculous

I ordered delivery through GrubHub. It was late night, 11:30pm.
Just…awful. Seriously, everything about it is just awful. I really thought there were some exaggerations here but everything is spot on.
3 hours for delivery on GrubHub and multiple calls I was told they were «minutes away». Food was inedible but after sitting for 3 hours, I don’t know anything that would be edible after that long. Soggy. Cold. If it’s consistently this bad, just don’t offer delivery. I think I’m actually more mad that they followed through and delivered the food that had been sitting.
I did like their oyster crackers.

1 star is way more than this place deserves. I placed an order at 12:40 and my food showed up almost 3 hours later.
When it had already been 2 hours I called the restaurant and asked where my food was. The non too polite man on the phone said they didn’t have drivers until just now, and that my food should be there in 15 minutes. 40 minutes later the driver called and said he was outside. I opened the door and he wasn’t there. I looked around for a minute and he was no where to be seen. Finally I tired calling his phone and it went to voicemail. When I was shutting the door to my house he finally decided to leave his car and bring me my «food». I told him he was almost 3 hours late and he shrugged while he said sorry.
All of this would have been somewhat forgivable if the food hadn’t been so bad it was inedible. Forget cold and soggy, those things can be fixed by a microwave. 1^st the food wasn’t even what I ordered and 2^nd I’ve seen better buglers at homeless cookouts. I tried to feed some to my dog and even he wouldn’t eat it.
Save your self time and money and eat elsewhere.

It was alright. I got the Italian beef w/​sweet peppers for $ 7. Wasn’t really in the mood for fries but it’s nice when it comes with, even though it’s worked into the price. I was kicking myself in the butt when I walked out and saw the special was Philly steak sandwich, fries and a can for $ 5.79 because I love a great deal and any excuse when I can bust out the bottle of A1.
The beef was good. Bread was soft. Got it dry bc I wanted the save the other half for breakfast. I had 4 – 5 fries on my drive back home and they were salty. Greasy. And it hit the spot. But I did get a couple croûton moments. If you read the other reviews you’ll know what this means.
I actually saw that they had grilled chicken wings and legs on the menu. I am definitely going to come back to try those on for size. I would’ve gave this place 4 stars if the menu was just a bit more cheaper for what it is.
My advice for people that had a bad experience here. Get off your lazy ass and DUI it here like a true Chicagoan.

NO!!! Horrible to say the least. I ordered my food to have delivered to my work. First of all I put in the delivery notes not to deliver my food till 12:30…well they delivered my food at 11:40, thank God my employer is flexible with eating at your desk.
The bag was soaking wet… start of a bad sign! I ordered the fried chicken with fries, the chicken itself was dark brown, a sign that the fryers have not been cleaned in some time. The fries were just as bad. They were cold and really hard.
This is not a place that I will order from again, there are too many options out there to choose from.

Good thing is that this place open late. We were craving for food but nowhere was open late after 2. So we decided to order food here through Unilocal Eat24. We should have read the reviews. We ordered the spicy steak dinner and got an extremely soggy cheeseburger and for the chopped steak we ordered it looked like an dried beef thrown between two slices of bread (It was not chopped steak!!) and it was dry as hell! Fries were sad and soggy as well. The cheesecake we ordered was gross and wasnt even cold they didnt even give us napkins or forks for us to «enjoy» our terrible order. We had to eat it with our bare hands but looking back at the food we ordered we decided not to eat it. We tried a few bites and my friends ate a good amount but now he fears he will suffer from that. Worst $ 37 ever spent! I DO NOT recommend this place and i pray that my friend and i do not die from diarrhea or food poisoning.

I ordered through Grubhub without reading any reviews on Unilocal.Just as I was starting to get worried I’d be waiting for hours for my food to get here, I got a call that it had arrived — 5 – 10 minutes EARLY!
Delivery guy was nice
Food was on time — even a bit early and I got everything I ordered
Food was good (fries were a bit limp but still warm and I ate them all)
I would order from here again.

I thought I’d give this place a shot through Grubhub just to see how it is. I should’ve read the reviews first because the short and sweet summary is, it’s terrible. I ordered the double chicken sandwich which came with fries and my girlfriend had a cheeseburger and fries. We also ordered a can of pop and a side of onion rings.
Grubhub stated that the restaurant was done making the food and was out on delivery. Over an hour after the estimated delivery time, two unanswered phone calls to the business, and one answered phone call to Grubhub themselves, we finally had our food. It’s a good thing Grubhub knows how to service consumers because this business does not. Neglecting your phone is not good business, especially considering that’s potential business they’re turning away. I’m not sure if the delivery driver works for Grubhub or the restaurant but no apology or explanation was given for why the food was so late.
The food was just plain bad. When the driver handed me the bag of food, the bag felt as if it was going to cave any second. Why you ask? Because the pop had been out of the fridge for so long, it sweated through the bag and completely soaked along with all the food inside. A simple plastic bag to keep the pop separate from the food would’ve avoided this. Not only that but the food was all cold, every bit of it. The fries were completely soggy and looked like soaked weeping willow trees. Had the sandwiches been warm, that still wouldn’t have salvaged the blandness of the food. The chicken itself was hard, almost as if it hadn’t cooked long enough. I asked my girlfriend if I could try her cheeseburger and she recommended I didn’t out of concern it might make us both sick if I did.
I learn from my mistakes and will never order from this shithole again. Be advised, it’s bad.

Worst Hot Dog I’ve ever had in Chicago. Oh by the way, I’m a Chicagoan. This is definitely a pass.

This is the type of place where they spit in your food, pick it up off the floor and serve you. Where the delivery guys are high, eat your food and say the order was canceled. Spend Money elsewhere.

Well, I’m glad that I read the reviews before I ordered. DO order from this establishment! Here’s why.
We ordered food for myself and some friends at 10:21, they said the order would be delivered at approximately 11:00. Guess what? They were here in 35 minutes! Yay!
So all in all, kudos to you GrubHub for letting a business like this one partner with you. If you know what’s good for you — YOU WILL order from here regardless of what that other reviewer said. What a great business, you should be very proud of yourself.

Well, I wish I would have read the reviews before I ordered. DO NOT order from this establishment! Here’s why.
Ordered food for myself and some friends at 12:21, they said the order would be delivered at approximately 12:50 — 1:00. Little to say, it’s 2:09 right now, it never came, and now when I call no reply. I did even call and reached someone at 1:32 and they said it was on it’s way and should be 10 minutes. Still no show. Still charged $ 37.xx for some food that I never got. I’ll update this if I get a refund but I would definitely not suggest this place and I plan to report them to GrubHub and the BBB. You at least call someone and tell them you can’t make it and refund their money, but no, absolutely no communication.
UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL:
My food finally showed up at 2:37am, after I went to bed. I opened it up once I got inside before I put it in the fridge to maybe hopefully eat the next day. they had placed a soda on top of the order inside and everything in the bag was soaked along with being cold from a poor delivery. Here’s where it gets better though… I called to get a refund four times and was told to call GrubHub to get it taken care of. GrubHub had to call them to approve it and they called them and they REFUSED MY REFUND!
So all in all, screw GrubHub for letting a business take advantage of you and if you know what’s good for you — DO NOT order from here. What an awful business, you all should be ashamed of yourselves.

I’d give them 0 if I could.
I ordered from here through grubhub on Saturday night. .. Placed my order at 11.37pm. The original estimate said it would be there in 45 – 55 minutes. About 5 minutes later, I got an updated that said they would be there at 1.10am. .. over an hour seems a little crazy but whatever.
At 12.53am I got a call from the driver saying he had a flat tire but would be there in 10 minutes. .. I actually clarified with him that he would be there in 10 minutes even though he had a flat and he said yes.
I waited up until 2.00am for him to arrive and he never did. .. but I still got charged.
I can’t rate the food (but judging by what everyone else says, it sucks) but I can rate the service and that did suck. You’ve been warned!

You completely ripped off my daughter and her friend. We are visiting and they ordered Milk Shakes and fresh cookies. The cookies were complete BS. PREPACKAGED CRAP. $ 20 dollars. You guys suck. I will be coming by tomorrow to return your cookies. Way to take advantage of kids.

In a moment of desperation, I tried Sammy’s again.
This time the food was only 30 minutes late and was actually edible… As a bonus, it was all there too!
Delivery driver was rude and basically tried to lob the bag of food over the gate rather than wait the 3 seconds it took me to open it.
Not a fan, but they get an extra star in the review update for delivering edible food this time.
