Oh, The 1901 does grow on you! I am a regular here, both as a performer(stand up comedy, folks… you would pay me to keep my goodies covered!) and as a spectator. This space is fun and funky and has a great vibe! Come check out Please-O-Matic, first Saturday of the month or The Let It All Hang Out Comedy Show, last Saturday of the month. Both fun shows and as always, BYOB!

Holy shit! The 1901 Gallery is an amazing place. They host unique burlesque and comedy events, craft fairs, and art receptions. I’ve been there on multiple occasions and have been turned onto some interesting underground art and music. If you have never been, you should plan a trip soon and see for yourself. Shit yeah!

You gotta love the 1901! An excellent resource for performers and artists. It is clear that the people who run the space really care about their space and have really made the most of it!

I first came to the 1901 for a figure drawing class, which they hold at the end of each month. It’s a small, intimate setting in which I could brush up on my drawing skills without feeling pressured to make anything spectacular. There are usually only a handful of artists, ranging from students to professionals. There’s a casual attitude and the models joke around with the artists. I’ve been to a few of the craft fairs and gallery receptions as well. It’s the place to find unique dark and macabre paintings, photographs, jewelry and sculptures. There is a wide range of prices depending on the artist and the piece, but there are definitely many affordable items. While it may not be to everyone’s taste, the 1901 fills a niche here in the city for gothic and alternative art. The donation they ask for any of the events is next to nothing, so there isn’t a reason to not at least check it out. They generally have snacks and coffee available at the larger events, but it’s BYOB. The entrance is a bit hidden. Look for the light strings just south of Belmont on Wolcott.

The 1901 is a small alternative gallery that features burlesque shows, art exhibits, craft fairs, and I’m probably missing something. The craft fairs are held on a monthly basis(or so) and are a great place to purchase some really unique things. Track their website for the next fair! Mother’s day is coming up :-)

This gallery is truly hidden and it is a gem in the gothic/alternative community. It exhibits various forms of art from the local gothic community including photography, paintings, mixed media, crafts, etc. It also hosts some creative burlesque shows, bands, etc. Drinks are served up and include goodies baked at home like brownies while you enjoy the art and performances. If you want to know where people like DJ Scary Lady hang out when in Chicago, or where the gothic artist community hangs, come check out this hidden gem.
