The Wifi is working. I usually come here for weekend breakfast. I was hoping to get avocado toast at 11:00 on a weekday. NOPE! Apparently avocado is a breakfast item??? The finally wised up and got chairs to fit the space! Had to happen! No more fan-backs obstructing your path thru a crowded and deafening space it means never having to say you’re sorry!

While I’ve never been to this physical location, I’ve had their food several times because they frequently cater at work. I do enjoy their sandwiches! I think their roast beef with sharp cheddar is my favorite. They also have a very nice salad with bleu cheese and strawberries that I’m quite a fan of. However, my favorite part about Companion is their sweet treats! They have a pretty nice cinnamon roll type thing — it has the light texture of a croissant that has been rolled with cinnamon and is then lightly glazed like a donut. They have a fantastic cheesecake brownie!!! It tastes perfectly undercooked in the most delicious way possible. Lastly, their gooey butter cake — it’s different from most others I’ve tried simply in that it’s thicker. Most of them are thin, maybe only half an inch thick. But theirs is probably an inch thick! The bottom layer of cake is nice and fluffy, the the gooey on top has the sweet cream cheese flavor you want! I definitely need to get by this place in person and treat myself to more!

Been here a few times recently and a few times awhile back. Always a line but it moves fast. Small parking lot out back. Fortunately there is street parking but it maybe a few blocks away. I enjoy looking at the houses in the area so the walk is ok(as long as the weather is not cold). The tables are close, there is outside seating. Haven’t had an issue finding an open table. Staff is nice and food is amazing. I’ve tried the soups, salads, sandwiches, and bakery items. My favorite is the tuna salad. The corn bread is also a must get. The soup was tasty, had super fresh ingredients, and was not too salty. I had the ham and beans recently and it was surprisingly tomato based with very fresh vegetables. The thing that stands out the most is the freshness of the ingredients and the amazing taste. Highly recommend for a healthy lunch or dinner. I think they close around 3pm.

My girlfriends and I were looking for a cute and easy coffee shop with some pastry options on the way out of town back to KC, and Companian did not disappoint! I had the breakfast sandwich(Claytonian) with veggies, egg, AND cheese and bacon, on a croissant – a little gluttonous I know :) –but it was amazing! The eggs looked like they were just baked and in quiche form and the croissant melted in your mouth. My two girlfriends got the green eggs and ham sandwich with pesto and bacon and it was soooo good! Definitely would recommend for a local casual breakfast spot!

My first time was on a Saturday to meet a friend for brunch. The food was good, but the service was poor. There are no signs to tell newcomers where to place an order, and the staff in that section ignored us. They forgot my friends’s order of tea, so she had to go back to the counter to get it. I second other comments about the parking. Given that and the service, I wouldn’t go back unless I happened to be in the area.

I took my daughter-in-law here during her lunch hour last Wednesday. We each had their power salad(Tough Love), and my DIL added chicken. The salads were good. Just good. Not $ 25-for-both good. The lemon vinaigrette was the standout. Also, for the time it took to find parking somewhere in their funky outside configuration, I would have been happier just going to our familiar Bread Co. on Brentwood.

I do love Companion and I’ve had it countless times catered out/various events. They’re all over St. Louis and make amazing bread! Last week was my first time actually at one of their locations for a lunch meeting with the Unilocaltern. While the food was fantastic, the service was pretty bad. The workers weren’t very friendly and kinda seemed miserable, which maybe they are… After we ordered they forgot multiple parts of our meal(i.e. drink, bread). They also only gave us have the meal then I waited for them to serve 5 other people before they handed me mine. I know I sound like a diva complaining but you could tell this wasn’t a one time deal. The bar-high tables are way too close together. If someone is sitting down then it’s impossible for someone to fit in behind them. I’ll stick to getting a to-go order next time I’m in the area.

Food is so good. Breakfast eggs and treats are to die for. Lunch is equally good but the mean mean mean old man that works the counter is a drag

I like companion. It’s a reliably & consistent place that serves good sandwiches. It’s a bit pricey so I consider it a treat but I’m happy every time I dine here. I hate that it closes at 3pm but they must be making their quota in the morning hours to be able to shut the doors for dinner. The new remodel is a much needed upgrade & allows for better flow & more customers to sit down & eat. I usually choose the«Frenchie» sub lettuce for sprouts & the garlic mayo for the dijon. The older gentlemen at the register is so kind & the other workers are very speedy. Try it too when you want a quality Brie sandwich too!

The cranberry pumpkin bread is hands down the best bread I’ve ever had. They also have a tasty pretzel croissant and the sugar cinnamon rolls make for a great present. The cornbread is moist and luxurious. This is my favorite bakery in St. Louis. The sandwich and salad lunches are a few dollars more than Bread Co. and so worth it.

Love the new décor in Clayton that gives more space and brightens up everything. Everything is good, especially the tuna with walnuts and dried fruit. The breakfasts look great, but the eggs are too rich for early morning. Bread, of course, always great. Ladue location has same food, but not quite the same laid back feeling as Clayton. One of the best quick lunches in the area.

Companion is one of the best lunch spots in Clayton. The menu is salads, sandwiches and soups. If you get there on the earlier side you may be able to grab some of their delicious baked eggs or oatmeal. I actually worked at companion back in 2001… What a change it has gone through, but the food is still just as yummy. My salad rotation goes between the Picnic Basket and the Go Green… But all of the salads are a good sized portion with lots of goodness in them. You can’t go wrong with any of the salads. The sandwiches are all also great — my husband loves the Frenchie, I love the Mermaid or the regular chicken salad sandwich or the Fa La La… YUM, the breads are all made in house. I will always love Companion and go for lunch a lot — it’s basically every week at this point.

Awesome Location in the Heart of Clayton(which is the Heart of St. Louis.) Friendly corner café in the most walkable part of St. Louis. Companion is a good café. However, it’s too small when busy. Fresh breads and ingredients. Fast service and convenient– especially if there is open street parking when you visit(rather busy M-F at Noon). Soups, salads and sandwiches are unique flavorful creations. . Negatives: Table are a too close together. Place is pretty small, maybe 1⁄3 the size of a typical St. Louis Bread Co.(Panera). Sandwiches were reasonable($ 7), but total bill was $ 35. The chicken and turkey were fresh cut, however a very sparce amount, which meant having to leave some of the bread behind. This is a sandwich place for folks who feel the bread is the best part of the sandwich for sure. Big Fan of the LOCATION and the food. Hope they can find space to expand and get more comfortable seating. Add a gourmet coffee menu and some couches and this place could be packed all day As of now, it’s just a great corner deli with unique menu. B– overall. Check their hours as I recall they close early. WORTH a visit if you have not been here. Recognized nationallly by USA Today for thier bread.

First of all, thank you to the owners for installing an air lock vestibule at the corner door, nothing drives me away faster from a restaurant than a cold air blast every time the door opens, so now I can frequent Companion in winter as well as summer.(Although admittedly, there is no lack of customers!) The outdoor patio can’t be beat in nice weather. Know that the lines are long, and slow, but worth it. The staff here simply does not turn over, year upon year, and they always seem happy, so they are clearly well treated. Just enjoy the pace. The food is fresh, well crafted, and thus a tad expensive. It’s the addicting eggs & potatoes that keeps me coming back. Have the staff hold them on the warmer until you pay, so they don’t get cold in line. I once bought bagels from all over town, to host a taste test, and Companion won, hands down. Always buy bagels or bread since you’re in line anyway. Be sure to get them sliced. Free parking is always available along Forsyth, sometimes you may have to walk. The restrooms are well attended and includes a baby changer and toddler seat. Open wifi, but this is not a place to linger over electronix. I’d love to see a celebrity barrista behind a separate coffee bar, with baked goods, in a fast take out coffee line. For that, I’d give five stars. I think it would increase revenue too.

Yum! This is an excellent quick and easy lunch spot with something for everyone! I have had their baked goods before, but this was my first dining experience and it is a new favorite. Inexpensive, high quality food. All their breads are amazing, but nods to pretzel bread and miller’s five grain. I will be back multiple times, because there are too many delicious menu items left to try! Four stars because I don’t like the new interior. I miss the cozy corner bakery feel.

If I am wanting to go out for breakfast/brunch, companion is my go to place. The bread is fresh, the toast is amazing, and the potato eggs are to die for. TODIEFOR! There is usually a line but it moves reasonably fast.

This is my favorite lunch place in St. Louis. Everything is delicious and made with high-quality ingredients. I love that they offer a pick-2 option(like Panera, but way better), where you can get a half salad, half sandwich, or soup paired together. That also comes with your choice of bread– wheat baguette, french, cornbread, or pretzel roll, OR you can pay $ 1 extra to get a pretzel croissant– worth it. My go-to sandwich is the spring chicken, and I love their chicken noodle soup. Another tip– order the chicken salad sandwich, but instead of on a croissant, get it on their cranberry pumpkin seed bread– awesome combo. Their bakery items are great too– I especially love the morning buns! It does get crowded, but it’s worth the wait. On weekdays they have an online express ordering option, which is super convenient so you don’t have to wait in line. My Wash. U. friends who don’t live in STL anymore always talk about how they miss Companion! It’s the best!

Nothing too special about this place. It’s good for lunch and it’s quick. Like the other reviews say, it is pretty similar to Panera Bread. Sandwiches are good. There was a really annoying girl next to us that wouldn’t shut up. I assume she probably went to Wash U. She ruined my meal for us because she sounded stupid and dumb. I will have to try out their breakfast one day and see if it is any better than their lunch.

I cannot believe living so close to this place the time wasted before I made may way in there… I will say if you live close you should become a regular… I had the baked eggs. For those of us from the midwest you will recognize this as an egg bake – it was perfection. I also had the cinnamon toast– Excellent. They have amazing looking sandwiches and breads. You can always stop in here if you need a quick little gift to take to somebody as they have spreads and other things on display that you can put together your own little companion gift bag. Don’t delay check this place out you will be happy you did.

Companion at Clayton is like an upscale, local-loving St. Louis Bread Co. The diners here during lunch are mostly workers from the nearby offices in ties and pretty blouses, but as a student, I like to venture on over to Companion for something to nom on once in a while :) ANNNND I get to feel like the young one in the crowd, har har har~ I always get the«Lotto»(Pick 2) option for half a sandwich and soup for $ 10.25. There aren’t many choices for the pick-2 sandwiches, but they definitely do not disappoint! I recommend French dip. It’s hearty and good to the last bite, unlike the greasy rendition I struggled to finish at Posh Nosh. The bread also keeps its chew without getting soggy~ The soups change on a daily basis, but the times I’ve been, there usually is a broth or veggie-based soup and a chili. It’s not cheap, but it’s fast(if you can beat the line!) and at a nice location. Also, there’s a separate counter to buy breads and baked goodies to go! I’m planning to go back and grab a MoMo roll, which is basically a classy, heavenly-looking cinnamon roll: D They close at 3pm Mondays-Fridays, so don’t come too late for lunch or you’ll look like a fool trying to pry open the door ;)
