When I want a sub I go to troops because they’re the best in the area. I ‘ve been a customer for longer than I’d like to admit, but the service, the guys working there and the food are all good. I always get the whole roast beef with everything and yes I can eat two!

Just brought my 2 sons to troops for lunch because they have been craving it! I grew up walking here after school and over 30 years later the subs are still the best! My 15 yr old said he can’t wait to drive so he can bring all friends here! The bread, the paper thin cold cuts and finely shredded lettuce make it the best sandwich around! Oh and don’t forget the fountain cherry cokes!

We’ve been living in Clifton for over 18 years, transplants from Long Island. This place could use a facelift, and to be honest, looks a little like a dive. I don’t know what made us finally come in, but we are so delighted we did. It seems like we’re making up for lost time, ordering sometimes twice a week. First of all, we did the Roast Beef with gravy, and it took all our strength to try something else, that’s how much we love it. So, based on other reviews, we went with the #11. Now we order one of each. Totally generous with portions, and everything is freshly made. There’s one thing that’s slightly under-rated and that’s the soda’s. They’re handmade with syrup and they couldn’t get any better. You can really, really taste the difference. Try the cherry cola, or the diet cherry cola, you won’t be disappointed.

We stopped here when traveling on the Jersey Turnpike and were very happy we did. We ate the cheesesteak and chicken parm. Both were delicious – some of the best we’ve had. We paid about $ 10 in total for both. The owner and other staff were extremely friendly. Loved this place! I would definitely come back again.

We recently placed an order for our party from here for a 4 foot sub(half ham/half turkey) and Troops did a great job. Plus, their pricing is superb for the amount of meat and topping they put in their subs, it’s always so much. We’ve also gotten just regular subs from them and they are fresh and great every time. Would highly recommend.

Not that impressed, at all. I love a great sub. No where better to get one than Jersey. I’ve tried this place twice & honestly, not impressed with the sub. First time was a few months ago. Barely any meat on the sub. I was still hungry after I ate it. My boyfriend ordered simple cheesefries. They overcooked the fries to a crunchy brown & forgot the cheese. So wasn’t a great first impression. Tried this place again today. I went in and had to wait quite some time-which was fine. However, it allowed me to see how unbelievably run down and unsanitary this place was. You couldn’t pay me to eat in the place. It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned, swept or mopped in 30 years. Further than that, I had a simple ham, salami & provolone sub. The guy took the salami & provolone out of the fridge, pre-sliced and in saran wrap. For a $ 10 sandwich-all the coldcuts should be freshly cut, it was extremely odd and had me wondering how long ago both items were cut. Not what you expect from a jersey sub house. Above all, the sandwich, quality of meat nor service did not stand out in a positive way against other local Jersey sub houses. I wouldn’t even call it medicore. Don’t waste your time or money.

Family-owned. Great local vibe. Friendly owner, great service, outstanding local subs. To quote the owner, «Try the #1. It’s a local favorite that people have been eating for 30 years.» So we did. A spiced ham, salami, and provolone with lettuce, tomato, onions, oil, vinegar, and spices. Would certainly eat here again.

Amazing as always!!! Sad that I haven’t been here in years since I’ve moved away, but happy to have visited and everything was still amazing! From the service to getting my sub and scarfing it down, it is still all the best! Love the thin deli slices, but yet they are not skimpy at all when it comes to filling up your sub. All delish and fresh!

LOVETHISPLACE! Today i was craving a tuna sub but just not any tuna sub. I’m particularly picky with tuna i like it to be creamy, not chunky and to have some crunch. I know the place looks run down from the outside but its a great joint when you go in. The guys there are always friendly and polite. I’m guessing the guy with the blond hair is the owner and he is just fantastic always streaming up a conversation with me and wishing me the best. When i was asked what i was having i told him that i was stuck between tuna and ham & cheese, he quickly took a spoonful for me of the tuna for my trying and wow was that good. I had a tuna sub with the works and a red Gatorade all for just under 8 bucks. BEATSSUBWAY, QUICKCHEKANDBLIMPEES in both price and taste. And in my case i rather pay for taste than something tasteless that’s cheap. I will be coming here again to try their cheese steak. Their fries are also good a must if i may say. TROOPS’ SUBS I LOVEYOU: D

Why do Hot Grill and Rut’s Hut get all the Clifton hype? This place should be just as locally renowned, if not more! What can I say, the food is delicious, never lazily prepared, in generous portions. I recommend paying a lunchtime visit here if you’re craving friendly conversation as well.

the quintessential NJ sub shop. If you think one of those chain sub restaurants are good you have to try the real thing this is such a good sub. the italian is huge you cannot eat a whole one. they pile the paper thin sliced meat and the vegatable are fresh and the bread is so good.

The subs are delicious. I got a #11– ham, capicola, prosciutini, salami, and provolone. The cold cuts were sliced thin and piled high with shredded lettuce, paper thin onion slices, and ripe tomatoes.(Not a fan of the bread though.) The fries here are done perfectly– wrapped in paper to absorb the moisture. They stay crispy even if you don’t eat them right away– must get.

I don’t know where else to go to get a perfect sandwich if anyone in NJ deserves 5 stars this establishment does… I stuck to my guns at first Turkey, bacon, mozz, with the works and pickles or cheesesteak but I have almost tried everything on the menu and I have not been disappointed… When I want a Sub this is my go to nothing else fills the void… Best Sub spot in NJ!

While BS’ing with a friend via text, I mentioned that I was craving a WaWa sub(obviously a sub I love, absolutely nothing against them). However, my friend promptly made fun of me, noting that it was lunchtime… during the week — in other words, I should go to an «actual» deli. Based on that interaction(aka peer pressure), I opened up Unilocal to see which delis were local to work. Troops caught my eye based on the good reviews. As I approached the shop, I was a little weary. It’s not much to look at, and I have to admit I can’t be certain I would’ve stopped in without Unilocal. They have a large OPEN sign, because it’s difficult to tell otherwise. I ordered a turkey and american with L, T, and vinegar. Around the same time, approx 5 other ppl walked in and gave their orders(all kinds of crazy concoctions). I honestly didn’t know how he’d keep them straight, but he confirmed my order — no onions, no oil — yep. I watched as he sliced ultra thin turkey right on to the bread from the slicer — he had won me over at this point, luckily it gets better. The verdict — the sandwich was super affordable($ 5), and delicious! The lettuce was also finely shredded, the tomatoes and bread were fresh, and he added the perfect amt of vinegar. I’m both happy and disappointed that I didn’t learn about this place sooner. If my job wasn’t ending next week I’d be here way too much. But, I still live in the area, so I’ll gladly go back. Friendly service too. I haven’t read all of the reviews, but saw that this was(possibly) negatively reviewed at some point along the way

I tell ya what… this place makes some good sangwiches. I get something from here every now and then and try something different each time. I also have been placing orders for parties here and have never been disappointed… neither have my guests. The guys in there are cool and down to earth… the types of people you want making your sandwich. I will say that the place looks like you could make the same setting in your unfinished basement in twenty minutes, but that’s the best part. These guys make sandwiches,…and they do it right… no advertising and no BS. Instead of going to Blimpie or Subway…(oh my god, you know what? If you go to these places, don’t go here… you don’t deserve it)…Great food, service, and peeps. Give them a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Troops is the best sub shop in the area. All you need to know is #11. The portions are generous, and the ingredients always look and taste fresh. I’m a little curious about some of the older reviews, though. I’ve actually found the owner and his employees to be very nice. Side note: If you’re ever in the Aberdeen-Matawan area, you can find a similar place called DA Subs that also offers big portions for good prices.

What more can you ask for? Fat sub, perfectly sliced meat, super friendly staff. It’s a hole in the wall joint, but I didn’t come here for the ambiance. I came for a fresh and loaded sub! I will be back.

If you’re serious about sandwiches, and I know you are, then say this with me: #11 with everything. Ample amounts of ham, capicola, proscuittini, salami, and provolone, shredded lettuce the way it should be, onions, tomatoes, with the perfectly soft roll soaking up all that vinegar and oil, you will be messy and you will be completely satisfied. This place is as good as it gets for Italian subs. The #3 is essentially the same as the #11 without the ham and salami, and almost as good. Very friendly guys behind the counter, too.

Used to come here on half days when I was in middle school. My favorite was the fries yumm. Usually took 10 minutes for them to make it but they served them hot and delicious. I remember the owner would kick you out if you brought in a drink purchased from somewhere else. I guess it makes sense but he used to single you out in front of everyone. I mean come on, we were middle school kids! Good thing it never happened to me, I just observed

Just tried Troops for the first and last time… place is dirty, meat is all pre-packaged and it is of sub-par quality. If you actually think that this place is any good at all or «the best sandwich you’ve ever had», you need to get out more. Disappointed as hell

Definitely a hole in the wall place. I wasn’t even sure if it went out of business. I got the #3 with the works based on another Unilocaler’s recommendation. It was very good. The meat was cut nice and thin, and the toppings were fresh and tasted great. French fries were good also. Everything was wrapped nicely to-go. It came out to $ 8 which seems like a good deal. Way better than a Blimpee or Subway. Tips: it’s next to the fire house. I drove right by it because it’s a hole in the wall place shared by some art studio. That corner is chaos so just park somewhere and walk. They have a lot if can get in there.

I live very near to this place and pretty much grew up in the area… I’m kinda upset that I NEVER stopped in this place sooner. The place doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the subs and sandwiches are delicious. My wife had and ham and Swiss half sandwich with the works. Of course I tried it and I loved it! I had the cheesesteak with gravy and fries onions… oh man. They use REAL delicious juicy steak. Awesome cheesesteak! The fries were fresh golden crispy goodness. I will absolutely be coming here again and trying something different. Only thing is they only accept cash, so make sure you’ve got some on you before you go there. The owner was really nice too. Very inexpensive too! Great for the price!
