This place is disgusting. The food is nasty and stale, the burgers aren’t cooked right. When you walk in, all you smell is mold and another funky smell. Overall not good

We ordered two steamed cheeseburgers, and really enjoyed them. Both were very moist and had tons of cheese. They steam the cheese, so the cheese looks different than normal, but the taste was great. The French fries were right out of the fryer and hot and crispy. Two people ate lunch for $ 16 and enjoyed it.

This location is no different than that of the original K LaMay’s in Meriden’s — straight to the point, good steamed cheeseburgers! Why you should try K LaMay’s: — More beef than most, LaMay’s uses 1/3-lb. burger. — Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese, none of that yellow american cheese nonsense — Very affordable pricing Whether you’re a die-hard Ted’s fan, or just craving something different — there aren’t many places you can get a steamed cheeseburger in CT, and K LaMay’s does it right. Good meat-to-bread ratio, you can customize these bad boys any way you want. Not sure what they use to spice the burgers, but the meat is flavorful and overall the burger is pretty good. LaMay’s keeps it local and also offers Foxon Park sodas: a Connecticut based, family owned and operated soda manufacturer. Deep River potato chips, made in Old Lyme are also available if you don’t feel like opting for fries or onion rings. FYI: Monday — Thursday: 11am-7pm Friday & Saturday: 11am — 8pm Sunday: 12pm — 6pm

It takes a certain amount of bravado to open a steamed cheeseburger joint, especially in a small town like Cobalt. Having been eating them for so long, I had no idea that steamed cheeseburgers were even a localized delicacy until it was mentioned on the food channel. Even around here though, it’s kind of a niche food, with a healthy amount of competition. That being said, these are now the steamed cheeseburgers by which all others should be judged. The patties are large and fit the bun perfectly. I’ve never had a dry one here, which is key. Always juicy. And the cheese is just amazing. Just gooey enough without making a disaster of your sandwich. It’s on the sharper end of the cheddar spectrum too, adding quite a bit of flavor along with its texture. They offer plenty of free toppings with a small up-charge for bacon, which is well worth it for the pile of thick, crispy bacon they put on. I’m a fan of the sautéed onions, and wouldn’t mind them adding sautéed mushrooms as an option as well. Other options and sides are plentiful. Their menu seems to grow each time I pop in. My kids love the chicken nuggets here, and if my wife isn’t in for a whole burger, she’ll often get the BLT. Hot dogs and turkey sandwiches are available. Fries and onion rings are freshly cooked with each order. Sweet potato fries are a new option, along with homemade chili(which I need to try), and hamburger soup. Chips, cookies, and other snacks are available, as well. They have a good selection of drinks, including Hosmer Mountain, which are great local sodas. Even if I’m taking the food to go, I’ll usually just order it there, as the service is quick, and I always enjoy chatting with the friendly staff. Seating is pretty ample for a hole in the wall type joint. A couple of large tables, a counter along one side, and a few seats at the ordering counter where you can watch them cook up your meal. There are also some picnic tables outside. I would highly recommend this place to any connoisseur of, or anyone new to steamed cheeseburgers, or anyone traveling 66, east of the river, looking for a great bite to eat.

First I have never had a steamed cheeseburger before and this was AWESOME. It was huge and they put a lot of cheese(not that orange junk from McD’s). The fries were good also(freshly made). Definitely plan on going again. The only thing is the building is old so it’s smelly(it is not from the food), so I would recommend eating on the picnic table right outside the door or get it to go.

Let me start this review off by stating that I have never had a steamed hamburger. I have, however, consumed my share of «gourmet hamburgers», and I’m not talking about Plan B in Glastonbury. More like B&B in Manhattan, Zuni’ in SF, and Prarie Ranch in Tx. There, credentials out of the way, let’s dive into K LaMay’s. Their menu is simple and small, much like their location which is the old DaVincis Pizza sublet. Choices are a single/double hamburger, single/double cheeseburger, BLT, Turkey bacon melt and a steak and cheese. I opted for the classic single cheeseburger with bacon. My first concern with burger joints that charge extra for bacon(*cough* FIVEGUYS *cough*) is that they’ll charge you upwards of 2 $ for what is essentially a dash o’ bacon bits. This however, was not the case with K LaMay’s. For an extra $ 1.75 you get nice, proportional helping of crispy bacon. So, that’s a topping I’d recommend. The buns are large hard rolls dusted in corn meal, very large, but still proportional to the patty(which is equally large). I couldn’t imagine the double burger, I could hardly hold the single patty burger in one hand. They. Are. Big. Now on to the important bit. The patty, and whether or not the steaming process did the classic American burger justice. In a word, yes. Yes it does. When you think of a hamburger, you think of a slab of beef being kissed by the flame of a propane grill, sizzling and hissing. You bite into a grilled burger and taste a charred outer layer with warm, dense, flavorful smokey beef on the Inside. But in a weird way, the LaMay burger is more«beefy» and the steaming process does the beef more justice(in my opinion) compared to your char grilled or fried meat patties. Its a hard thing to explain, regardless It was a tasty, light, flavorful, and a healthier hamburger. Topped with a fresh slice of cheddar, and you’ve got an Instant hit. I also ordered the 12 chicken nuggets, an order of fries and an order of onion rings. The nuggets were the biggest surprise, compared to the BK or McD nugs, LaMays nugs are more dense, tastier, and an overall better experience. The fresh cut fries and onion rings were equally satisfying, not too salty, just the right size and a terrific companion to the burger 10 minutes after I finished the meal, I wasn’t feeling like I had a brick in my stomach, I wasn’t breaking out in a cold sweat like I normally would be after a 5 Guys or the rare McDonald’s ¼lb. I was very content. Overall, the LaMay cheeseburger was a delicious experience. A healthier alternative to the chain joints, and a relatively inexpensive meal. Try it once and you’ll be hooked.
