Cafe Luna

Based on previous reviews the expectations were high. The food was very good but not excellent. Great prices. Friendly staff. Though my meal was good, I am hard-​pressed to see how so many gave this place 5 stars.

On our way home from Tahoe and needing lunch. I had the carne Asada tacos and my husband had carne Asada burrito. The food was very good and the service was amazing. Everyone was super friendly! Definitely found our new lunch spot when coming home from Tahoe!

That Diablo burger was so tasty! I needed a bit more salt and the hottest (homemade looking) hot sauce but my sister liked it the way it was. We split it with a salad and I ordered an iced chai.
We came with 3 other girls who also raved about their meals. Portions were generous, price was right, all in all a wonderful experience in this sleepy and small town of Colfax (which I didn’t know existed outside the McDonald’s and gas station next to the freeway).

Very cute little café. The food is delicious, everything seams to be made from scratch. I ordered the park verde special, especially loved the rice. Friendly owner too.

I would say the food is only deserving of 3 stars. What bumps it up to 4 is the staff and the coffee. I would stop back by next time down the hill, but probably just for a coffee.

My husband and I have been eating here since my father-​in-​law recommended them to us. We usually go in for breakfast. Their bagel sandwiches are absolutely delicious and their huevos rancheros are made to perfection. I was worried about finding places to eat when I cut back on the grains I was eating, but they offer something called the «Power Bowl» which is essentially a breakfast burrito sans tortillas.
They do have a nice selection of house-​made gluten-​free pastries, and they make their own chai in house. If you like your chai spicy and not-​too-​sweet, this is the place to go. They make the best chai between Dutch Flat and Nevada City!
Again, their house chai is amazing.

I stopped here for breakfast on the way up to the slopes, and I’m soooo glad we did. The breakfast burrito is no joke, it looked huge, so I went with a smaller plate of breakfast goodness + corn tortillas. The chef greeted everyone as they came in and had so many regulars. What a great neighborhood place!
This is a gem, and one I hope more of you find on Unilocal or just wandering around Colfax. Rarely does a place have 85+ reviews with 5 stars. You know the community is behind this and the chef is certainly 150% in!
The coffee was also great! Clean bathrooms and good space. Check it out on your way up/​back to/​from Tahoe!

Delicious breakfast on our way to Squaw Valley! The sourdough egg sandwich with bacon for $ 6 totally hit the spot and it was a great size too, we shared it between 2 people and it was totally enough. Also the cashier and the cook were very sweet.

What a gem. Had it not been for the Unilocal reviews, I would have never ventured into town to try this place out on my way to Tahoe.
So first thing is first. If you are looking for a high-​end dining experience with proper table linens, sommelier, and matrie d’, Café Luna is not for you.
What makes Café Luna fantastic is the high quality food and really reasonable prices. Particularly given that most of the food options in the area are fast-​food chains.
Super-​friendly staff. Wife loved the salad while I feasted on the fish tacos. I am definitely coming here again should I find myself in need of lunch on my way to North Tahoe.
Added bonus: My kids love trains. As we were eating lunch, a freight train rolled by with at least three engines and 50+ cars. Free entertainment for two little boys that lasted over 10 minutes. All visible from the window seats at Café Luna

The front guy stepped out for to fetch some change so my wife and I decided what to get and the chef in back was willing to take care of us. Wow. The I said vegetarian burrito, no sour cream and he said you want Vegan? It was wonderful, food presentation, aroma, taste all excellent. Friendly staff. Real pleasure.

Just had the chicken tostada special, wish I’d taken a picture. Café Luna offers fresh, well seasoned, beautifully presented food. Colfax is very happy to have you.

I’ve been traveling on Highway 80 my whole life and never had a reason to stop in Colfax. Today I checked Unilocal for a place to stop for lunch. Café Luna popped up with a 5 star rating so my family and I decided to give it a try.
My son had the mouth watering El Rey sandwich. Let me just say we were all a little jealous when it arrived at the table. It’s a grilled cheese with turkey, bacon and avocado. Need I say more? My husband had the chicken street tacos. The chicken was quality. He enjoyed the crispness of the chicken, and the grilled to perfection corn tortillas. My salad — delightful. Beautiful presentation, generous portion of blue cheese and pecans topped a fresh pile of delicious greens. Yummy!
I assume that the super friendly person who took our order was the owner. Seemed like she knew everyone in the restaurant. I can see why it is popular with the locals.
Café Luna will be a new favorite stop on the way home from Tahoe. Side note — can anyone tell us what what the deal is with the tiger in someone’s yard visible from Highway 80? #onlyincolfax

What an amazing little gem! Their espresso drinks are top notch. The food looks (and is) fresh and delicious. I got a carnitas burrito and was not disappointed. If you are in the area and looking for a bite to eat, this is the place to go.

It sounds crazy, but this café played a huge factor in us deciding to move to Colfax. Their chili rellenos are unbeatable, hamburgers amazing, nachos off the charts… I was skeptical that they could nail carnitas, since I’m a carnitas snob, but yep, totally nailed it.
Plus, the owner is really wonderful, sweet, kind, fun, funny, and awesome.
We’ll be coming there often!

This place is a gem. Talk about a small place hidden away. Its like the movies. Small town with a perfect restaurant.
First off the girl that helped us was amazing. She was so nice and helpful. Come to fond out she was the owner. Her customer service is on point.
The only thing I was super bummed about was that they were out of Carne asada. Bummer. But I got their special of the day, a BLT with avocado. It was huge and delicious. My boyfriend got the carnitas burrito, and it was also HUGE and amazing.
This is a MUST stop place for lunch!!!

I give out 5 stars very carefully and I am so close on this review. SO close. 4 stars from me is very good still though. The only reason for holding back a star is I would have liked to see a cleaner bathroom and kitchen area. However, the service and the food were great! I had a simple pecan and Gorgonzola salad and a cup of tortilla soup. (I really wanted the Grilled Cheese with Bacon or the Jalapeño or Blue Cheese burger but with steak coming up for dinner, opted for lighter fare). The salad was fresh, everything that should be crunchy was crunchy, fresh greens (no leaves wilted or old looking — happens elsewhere often), veggies colorful and bright and cheese fresh as well. The chicken tortilla soup did not have any crunchy tortilla chips in it but rather a delicious tomato and tortilla flavor. I enjoyed the consistency which was not a watery brothy type consistency but a nice medium density broth with bursting flavor.
It’s also a cute place with a few tables for outdoor seating (cute signs, beautiful paintings/​art (for sale) inside and a very casual café feel).
I would definitely come back.

Still making fabulous meals. Our whole family is addicted and we try to make this our weekly go– to place. I can’t say enough good stuff about this wonderful restaurant.
As I said in my first review, we’ve eaten everywhere, all types of food but this is right at the top of our most delicious lists. I just hope Mario doesn’t run out of energy and ideas. He’s a one man band of culinary marvels.

Today was the third time I have eaten at Luna. The prior two times were at their old location and the food and service were both excellent. The new location? Food was again excellent but the service was not good. My wife ordered a chicken burrito and I ordered their daily special of three salmon tacos. Another couple ordered about 7 – 8 minutes after us and received their food before us. We waited another 5 minutes and I went in to see if there was a problem only to find that they had given our order to the other couple. It was not like they were slammed or something. We were the only two orders outstanding.
So now we waited a while longer. No big deal. But when we did get our order, I only got two tacos not the three I had ordered. If you are going to screw up someone’s order, don’t do it twice.
I will go back. The food is excellent and I just hope they were having a bad day.

Amazing Mexican food! Had the La Bamba burrito, which was flavorful and spicy. The beautiful woman who took and served our order was chatty and friendly. She offered suggestions which was nice because we were just rolling through town on our way to the Bay Area.
Indoor and outdoor seating options with a nice, clean bathroom if you need it. Highly recommend!
