The inventory is intriguing and prices seem reasonable, but the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. After purchasing a piece of furniture, they recommended a mover for hire. Seven calls and no response. We live out of town so sent a friend in the area over with a truck. The personnel on site refused to help carry the piece ten feet from the loading dock to his truck on the grounds they are not covered by insurance. And they were rude to him when he asked for assistance. Ironically, one of us is an attorney who practices in this area of law and knows with certainty that they would be covered under state law; rather than hear a patently untrue rationale for the policy we would have had more respect for a truthful answer: «we don’t provide that service for the last ten feet. Customer is responsible for carrying items across the threshold.» And the service policy should have been declared prior to processing the transaction. We finally rented a truck and picked the item up ourselves. The floor manager was visibly impatient when we asked him to open the loading dock door to retrieve the item, tapping his foot and looking exasperated when it took us less than three minutes to move the item across the threshold … Two of the minutes were lost to directing traffic in the back alley that the manager did nothing to help coordinate. When we asked if he could spare some tape to secure a door on the piece, he generously gave us four square inches. We have been happy with previous purchases that we could carry out through the front door, but this experience left us very disappointed. Communication was poor and the customer service attitude was less than satisfactory. Not sure there will be a next time for anything that would not fit in the back of a standard SUV.

Received communication from the owner today with a check for their entire commission. I appreciate their caring in this situation.

I’ve recently become a stalker of GM’s Revue. They have a table, and I want it. But not right now. It needs to get cheaper first! Here’s the deal with Revue: As time passes, items get cheaper. With a little risk and a little luck, you can get something you really want for a decent price! Revue is more about furniture than Grandview Mercantile. It doesn’t have to be vintage, but it does have to be in excellent condition. And you can actually sell your own things here! Go check out their website, and you can read all the details. Okay, I guess it’s time to go back to Revue and stalk my table.

When I walk in to a place like this, I usually judge it based on its art. There are places that have actual works and places that have wall decorations. There’s a big difference between the two. You buy art in a gallery or a high end furniture store and you should not find wall decorations there. You buy WD’s at places like Target. They’re things to put on your wall to pretend that you have sophisticated taste because you have a make believe kandinski. I really feel like a there are few pieces at Revue that leave you speechless with adoration. But most of the things feel like upscale things meant to look expensive. They cost a lot to look like you spent a lot. To their credit, there are some absolutely and utterly gorgeous things here. They’re diamonds in the… cubic zirconium posing and priced as diamonds.

ReVue is Grandview Mercantile’s larger Siamese sister. While the 8,000 square foot Grandview tends to focus more on jewelry and art, ReVue houses 12,000 square feet of furniture and glassware. Not to worry, the two stores are joined at the hip, so you can go from one to the other without ever stepping outside. ReVue’s furniture ranges from awesome antique chairs and hutches to modern dining tables and bookshelves. I love, love, love ReVue’s crystal. I found some amazing crystal glasses there earlier in the year. ReVue changes their prices with time. Each item is labeled with five or so dates and corresponding prices. As time passes, the prices drop. Be careful, because I had my eye on those crystal glasses and was waiting diligently for the price to drop, but just as I was about to swoop in and buy them, they disappeared. It’s a hard lesson to learn, but if you love something you see at ReVue, you better buy it right away or someone else will. My desk is actually from ReVue. It’s this great, L-shaped behemoth with a slide-out writing table and plenty of drawers. I love it, and the price was insanely reasonable. I like to sit at it and think about the people who might have sat at it before me, slaving over their own work. ReVue’s stock changes daily. People scarf up all the best stuff, but then, within 24 hours, more great stuff arrives. You could shop there every day and find something new each time. Since the store is so big and so packed full of merchandise, it’s a little overwhelming. Like going to the art institute of Chicago, this place is almost impossible to absorb all at once. Take your time in Revue. You’re sure to find something you like.
