The Best Workshop

I posted a review of «The Best Workshop» on December 2, 2015. I waited for a month to receive a call back from the owner, Fernando Lang, to my three voice messages left on his cell phone and his business phone. After receiving no response, I filed a Small Claims Court lawsuit to recover the amount paid for refinishing my dining room table. The finish of my dining room table had cracked and peeled less four months after The Best Workshop had refinished it. It’s been almost two months since I filed my lawsuit and it goes to trial next month. Each day the cracking and peeling of my table gets worse, so I bought a table cloth to cover it up till this matter is resolved and I can get my table refinished. I wish I could post pictures with this review so that readers could see how awful my table looks.

Fernando refinished a table for me about a year ago and I was so happy with his work I have become a repeat customer. He is honest, great to work with, takes the time to understand what you want and does a high quality job everytime. I highly recommend Fernando and his crew at The Best Workshop.

Fernando and his crew did such a good job restoring an antique bed headboard, footboard and night stand that we took our 100 — year-​old family heirloom dresser to them, too. All look like new and will now last another generation. Fernando was careful to find out exactly what we wanted in terms of finish, and the results were just what we were after. Prices were reasonable and agreed up front, with no added costs.
We highly recommend The Best Workshop for restoration of important pieces of furniture.

When owner Fernando Lang came to our new house in Walnut Creek for an estimate on refinishing my kitchen cabinets, I was immediately struck by his keen observations and the littlest details that I hadn’t noticed myself. I received several other estimates that were quite high, because they all wanted to refinish the entire kitchen even though the upper cabinets were in good shape. Fernando was the only one confident enough to refinish only the lower cabinets and drawers to match the existing stain from the upper cabinets, which made his estimate much more reasonable. Not only did he refinish them perfectly, but he also replaced all the hinges with the new soft-​close version. Drawers and cabinet doors that did not close evenly or smoothly are now perfectly aligned. My wife and I couldn’t be happier, especially since it was done at less than half the cost of other estimates.
Very important to me was that he always answered his phone, or called back quickly, kept us up-​to-​date on progress, and was always true to his word on keeping his appointment times, and job completion date. On a side note, I was also impressed with how very careful he was about our hardwood floors by laying down blankets for his path through our house to the kitchen.
During the job, he found that one of the large wood panels at our kitchen island was very loose, so he even repaired that at no additional charge. On top of all that, he gave us a house-​warming gift! What contractor does THAT?! Amazing. If you need any refinishing of furniture, cabinets, doors, antiques, then this is your guy. He knows his stuff, and is very personable. I would highly recommend him to everyone. And yes, it’s a nice bonus that his workshop is so conveniently situated directly opposite Costco!

Recently I had the wood on two badly worn chairs refinished by Fernando at The Best Workshop in Concord, a very positive experience.
The location was easy to find – within a block of Concord Costco, so I combined it with quick trips there for groceries or gas. Parking was always available near his shop – important when you are unloading furniture.
Fernando was pleasant to work with. He returned messages quickly and assessed my objectives well as I showed him my project for the estimate. A few days later, he called me in to ok the color of the stain on a small area of the wood before proceeding. He insisted on carrying the mid-​sized chairs from my car for the estimate, and (after the job) placing them safely in the car (I brought cheap blankets for wrapping them) when I picked them up.
The project was difficult because there were areas of leather that had to be masked off, and yet he had to refinish all the way up to the edges of the leather, which was hard to access in some areas. I told him that I did not expect the wood to look perfect because areas were so worn.
Results: The leather was well protected during the work, and the wood finish is very attractive. Because the finish was difficult to match, he actually chose to do more labor on the wood than he promised for the agreed price. We were pleased with the results, and recommend this attentive craftsman.
