We decided to give the Blue Heron another chance after we heard the food quality had improved after new management took over. I can definitely say that is has. My hubby, mom, and I went for lunch. I got the meatballs with garlic mashed potatoes. My hubby got the bratwurst and knackwurst while my mom got the weinerschnitzel. We all enjoyed our dishes very much and will be coming back again! Happy to see another restaurant in the area doing well again!

I give it three stars because of the service(and some other oddities). The server was very nice, but seemed to forget about us once our food arrived… My boyfriend had the clam chowder and loved it. He said it was flavorful and hearty. I started with a house salad, but they only had blue cheese, ranch and honey mustard, which I thought was odd(no balsamic, not even oil and vinegar). Soup and salad was served with warm bread. We shared the seafood casserole. It had nice big pieces of seafood in it, unlike some places that call it «seafood» but skimp on the seafood. There were lots of mini shrimp, big chunks of salmon and scallops(there were a few pieces of bacon which was odd. I don’t eat bacon so I had to work around it…) It was served with steamed broccoli and spinach. Very plain, so I ate it in one bite with the casserole. It was a big portion. Plenty to fill us both up after our appetizers. We flagged down the host for a box and she offered us a free dessert if we paid in cash(if it’s $ 25 or over they do that so they don’t have to pay card fees). We got a raspberry cake to go and ate it for breakfast the next morning. It was so delicious, you could tell it was fresh and hand made. It was a bit spendy for the experience. I might go back, but probably just for the tasty food. The happy hour prices were decent, so maybe I would go then.

Great food, service and beer. We came in at 4 pm and they let me order lunch size Weiner schnitzel which I really appreciated because I just cannot eat dinner size meals. The schnitzel was excellent and their dinner salad was awesome. Husband had the Stroganoff and he loved it. There monthly dark beer had a pumpkin base; my thoughts exactly, pumpkin? The server gave me a sample and it was wonderful, so much so I ordered a 20oz it was smooth. We are passing through on our way to CA and would certainly come back if ever in the area.

Love the new ownership & food. Spinach salad is wonderful with fresh bread. I’ve also had some of the German food, which is good. I always enjoy some items more than others, but that’s just personal taste. Always get good servie.

Loved this place! Great atmosphere, friendly staff. German beers on tap! I love German beer! We tried the goulash and the clam chowder and both were great! I had the Dutch meatballs with hunters gravy and mashed potatoes, which I though was hearty and fantastic. The hubby had the bratwurst meal and he loved his as well. We will without a doubt go back here!

The Blue Heron is full of charm, from the decorative building to the great service. You’ll find the owner there running around with a smile making sure everything is going smoothly. They have an extensive beer menu with lots of options. If you happen to be having a heavy German dinner, I’d go with a Pilsner or blonde. If you’re just there for a beer you can get a lambic on tap, an abbey ale, or a locally-brewed IPA. I tried the Hungarian goulash. It was a huge plate full of veggies, a spiced pear, spaetzle, and deliciously tender meat leaving you wanting nothing except a bigger stomach. My fiancée tried some seafood & clam chowder and it was good but he wished he would have had one of their German dishes. The desserts are made fresh and to die for. This place has become a regular stop in our new home of Coos Bay!

Told myself I would never come back, but the recent reviews and management change gave me a change of heart. My wife, mother in-law, and myself went in for lunch and shared quite a few different fairly priced items. We had the schnitzel, the knackwurst, goulash, and meatballs. All very well prepared and fresh. Everything was neat, clean, and tidy, and the waitstaff was very friendly. The happy hour menu is long and affordable. I had a rogue brewery real rootbeer that was outstanding. Clearly this place has come leaps and bounds since Adam took over.

The pit stop you’re always looking for in a small town: friendly, flavorful, unique. Damn good authentic German fare, east coast chowder, double fried fries, veggie options & more. Incredible local & import beir selection(German gose on tap!) from pint to full stein. Great service, welcoming locals & good conversation. The bar tender is sweet as strudel, which you get for free if you pay with cash. A definite must try!

This place is super clean, bathroom, tables, bar is so clean it’s great. The owner is super cool, trying to take the old owners vision in 2016, some of you had a bad time with the old owner, trust me go back it is totally different now. The food is great and made to order. When I’m up in coos bay I’m going to be here

I’m not entirely sure I would call this a bistro. For me there is an impromptu feel about a bistro, and this restaurant in the middle of Coos Bay is far from impromptu. German food is serious food and it takes commitment and care to produce. The Blue Heron has this in spades, along with a beer list to match. I had the cabbage rolls, served with kraut, potato pancakes(with cream and apple sauce) and red cabbage. All excellent, and I found myself consciously slowing down and making sure all that hard work did not disappear in ten minutes. Whatever you end up having, linger over it. You’ll be glad you did.

I visited The Blue Heron Bistro along with my best friend on a road trip across the Western half of the United States. Out of all the restaurants, it was this unexpected treat that stood out the most. The décor of the location is suitable for its German roots, with said nationality’s theme present in every nook and cranny. It’s mixed suitably with vintage American content from the 1950s and prior, which is absolutely ideal for tourists. The authentic German cuisine is cooked to absolute perfection in every regard, from the sausage to the sauerkraut. My friend, who is not a fan of sausage, absolutely loved the food as well and was blown away by its quality. I can affirmatively recommend The Blue Heron Bistro for any tourist, including myself on future visits! Five stars well earned!
