This place is great ! Family run food is delicious. When you go there just be prepared you have to pile the veggies high and give the cook your bowl he grills it up nice and then it comes to your table. Also the bread flats are great and the tampora yummy ! GREATJOB ! At great prices.

Yum! And there ARE vegetarian options! Usually when my boyfriend and I got out we order regular meals — i pick out the meat and slide it his way, and he passes me other goodies. Disclaimer — I’m a very lax vegetarian and just pick out the meat. If you cannot have chicken touch the same knife as your dish, then disregard this. Anyway, it’s not on the menu, but you can get the regular BBQ meal(comes with soup(vegetable or corn(corn is A+++)) egg roll and rice) and then you can load up on the veggies and they stir fry it. Great variety, great taste!

This was my first Mongolian BBQ experience and it was super yummy! I like being able to build my own bowl, and that the meal included hot jasmine tea, rice, and egg roll, and plenty of fresh veggies and sauce to add to my bowl! Will definitely be craving this from now on!

Decided to try this place when we were on our way to 17th street, didn’t know they had lunch but saw lots of peeps inside. Glad we tried it. Didn’t really know what to do at first, so we ordered and the waitress brought us our raw beef and said to go up to the front and make it. When we went up we started pouring the sauce on it first and the nice man near the counter came over to help us out. He showed us how it’s done– pound the beef down so you could fit lots of veggies on top then add sauce! What a great lunch meal, not too heavy and delicious. Enjoyed the tea and all the sauces as well.

This place is great! I came here with my boyfriend for my first time and loved it. My boyfriend came here years ago in high school and he said it’s the same. It’s plenty of food especially for an amazing price. You’ll definitely be full after this place and if your not maybe your eating too much lol. The staff was super friendly and even gave us extra bread on the house! Will be back definitely

Used to be a great place to come and get full, the food is great, but the portions have shrunk unbelievably, when Paul and his wife owned it you would always leave with food, now you should order double.

Don’t even bother. Skimpy bowl. No fresh garlic. No mushrooms. Catered for people whom are not much familiar with real good Mongolian bbq. Combo meat with shrimp meant fried shrimp with wontons. No shrimp on your stir fry. Take your money somewhere else.

I have experienced a lot better. Food choices were small, sauce choices were small. Not a very good display of Mongolian BBQ. The service is good though. I would not return because I don’t feel like I received the value for what I paid.

The staff were incredibly friendly and the service was amazing but I could not say the same for the food quality nor for the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities. The egg rolls were great in addition to the rice but the vegetable options are not only extremely limited, but also there weren’t even enough serving utensils for all the vegetables in the area for you to construct your bowl. There also weren’t very many sauce or flavoring options and the sauces were very bland and flavorless, even the«spicy» ones. Very shortly after leaving, both my companion and I also experienced extreme stomach pains and food poisoning, so I’m not sure if we will come back here again. But the staff members are great and this review is nothing against them!

Was so happy that 17th St. actually had a Mongolian bbq place, which is hard to find in the area. This place didn’t disappoint. I ordered the 9.80 dinner which was a great deal. You get this delicious egg soup and egg roll along with these yummy chewy sesame rolls. The high temp stir fry was just what I needed to get in my veggies for the day. You get a choice of beef, chicken, lamb, or pork. The atmosphere is clean and the service is friendly. The lady showed us how you stuff the stir fry into half the sesame roll. Sooo good with the orange sauce.

I frequent this place pretty often. This is one of the only Mongolian bbq spots in costa mesa/newport. Its a cute little restaurant and has a decent vibe. I really love the egg soup and the biscuit pocket things. The only thing i feel like its missing is noodles and some extra vegetables. The vegetable section is pretty limited but if they added for example mushrooms etc., customers would have a bigger variety to choose from.

The food is well-priced for the amount you get, especially since hot tea comes with your order. I’ve been coming here for years and the qua. lity is really consistent. Standouts: the pocket biscuits and the fried special wontons. The biscuits are a very soft, pita-type sesame bread. I would pay for that recipe, they’re amazing. The wontons are greasy, crunchy, tasty as heck. The food is great and I always come home with several meals’ worth of leftovers. Would highly recommend to anyone 10⁄10

I’ve been going here for over a decade now and cannot say enough good things about this place! Food is great quality and very reasonably priced!!! I usually go for lunch and get the B. with turkey, the special comes with a small scoop of rice and one tiny egg roll(my favorite!) and 2 biscuits. It’s like $ 8, fabulous deal and always leave satisfied but stuffed :)

Mongolian BBQ? Mongolian yum! I’ve been a fan of this joint since highschool! Perfecting the tower of veggies for the BBQ is a challenge I’ve conquered! Everything is fresh and delicious! Be prepared to order more buns — they are delicious too!

The food here is authentic. The favor is good, the sauces taste right. When I first was told that they would bring out the meat for me, I was afraid they would be stingy. But that’s not the case at all. They give you plenty of meat. Lamb is my favorite. I would’ve like a bit more selection on the veggies, such as mushrooms and tofu, but that’s not a big deal. And, no noodles, but I’m perfectly fine with that… authentic Mongolian BBQ restaurants do not have noodles, they have bread pockets, which is what they have here. They are fresh, hot, and puffy… perfect. Sure, the décor is a throwback to the 80’s, but hey, I didn’t go there to see modern art, I went there to get my tummy filled with yummy food, and that’s exactly what happened by the time I left there. The restaurant is rather small, most tables are 4-seaters or 2-seaters, I believe I only saw 1 table big enough for 6 people. Too bad I don’t live close to this restaurant or else this would definitely be one of my go-to restaurants for good food.

As far as I can remember this Mongolian BBQ house hasn’t change much for the last 20 years. It’s still the same small family owned restaurant with the same décor serving the same food that tastes the same. The service was never good but this time was all time worst. We got there around 6:45pm for dinner. There was a group of 7 ahead of us and the waitress was busy getting their table ready. We didn’t have to wait long but people came after us had to wait much longer. Since there were only two of us, they let us in and pointed to a table next to the entrance and signaled us to sit while they continue in getting the large group situated. We were watching them getting seated, got their drink and took their order. After 10 mins we realized that they had forgotten about us. We had no water, no tea, no menu and none of the waitresses even noticed us or came by to our table. I tried to make eye contact with them so I can wave someone down which took another 5 mins. Finally a young lady came to take our order and was surprised that we had no menu and no water. But we were resourceful and while we were waiting we found some To Go menu by the entrance so we figured out what we want. We ordered All You Can Eat. This poor girl seems to be the only one that’s doing something and serving all the tables. She’s running around like chicken without a head. Once we got her attention she’s very nice and very polite. She’s the only once came back and checked on us later on. The other ones weren’t doing much. The quality of the meats is good. You can order chicken, pork, beef and lamb or a combination of them. They are very fresh and tender, much better than the other Mongolian BBQ restaurants around. I like that they have a lot of fresh vegetables to add to your BBQ. The spicy sauce is NOT hot at all. It just adds flavor to your BBQ. For those reviews complaining about no noodle, Mongolian don’t put noodle in their BBQ. The rice came with the meal is about the size of a golf ball. It’s not enough. Regular(1 serving) is $ 12.99 or if you are hungry get All You Can Eat for $ 16.99. You will get unlimited meat(beef, lamb, pork and chicken), rice, mini egg rolls and pockets except egg drop soup which surprisingly is not all you can eat and no idea why. I got beef and lamb and then I carefully piled all kind of vegetables on top of it like a small mountain, added different sauces and left my bowl on the counter waiting in line to be cooked. There were 2 chefs standing in front of a small(compare to other Mongolian BBQ places) flat round grill in a cramped corner. It was finally my turn and I was excited to see one of the chefs took my bowl and turned around to put it on the grill but I was mortified by what happened next. He knocked my bowl over on the edge of the grill and spilled everything out below the grill onto the gutter where all the drippings and burnt food they scraped off the grill collected. The chef was speechless and just staring at the spillover. He looked at the other chef like asking for his opinion if he should pick up the food and put it back on the grill. I finally said to them, «Hey did you spill my bowl? What are you going to do?» The owner came over and said to me, «What kind of meat?» No apology and not a word of sorry. He handed me a half bowl of the meat and turned around walked back into the kitchen like nothing had happened. I, on the other hand felt like all the hardwork I put into carefully assembling the veggies on my previous attempt was wasted. The worst part was I had to get back to the end of the line of 10 people to start assembling my bowl again and wait for my turn at the grill. But they don’t care. Overall, 4 stars for food, 1 star for service and the young lady get an extra star for her service so total 2 stars. Averaging the food and the service I am giving them 3 stars.

I have to admit… I didn’t come here with high hopes. Hubby was craving Mongolian BBQ and this happened to pop up on Unilocal search as we were cruising Costa Mesa. When we pulled in and realized Shunka was in the same strip, I almost changed our meal trajectory. But hubby’s enthusiasm for trying this place out won me over. Décor is old school 1980’s Chinese restaurant. Indeed, the fixtures and furniture looked very… err…vintage. That being said, everything was nice and clean, and we were seated right away. Since we were starvin’ marvin, we all got the AYCE option for $ 17. This place is different in that they bring you a bowl of meat and THEN you go up to the bar for veggies. The good news is they’re almost anal about being RIGHTTHERE at your table asking you if you want more meat as you’re taking the last bite of your first bowl. We only had to flag them over one, towards the end, when they didn’t expect us(me) to want more. Among the three of us, we tried the beef, turkey and pork. Turkey was definitely my favorite with the pork coming in second. The meats were surprisingly tender especially knowing they probably weren’t special cuts of anything. Veggie and sauce selection was a little lacking — I wished they had tofu and fresh garlic — but we made do. Also, if you’re a noodle fan(I’m not), they don’t appear to have noodles on the DIY bar. The end result, after a few scoops of lobster sauce, some dark sauce and a heaping thing of chili pepper oil, was surprisingly delicious. Service in general was very friendly, efficient and helpful. Definitely a case of «don’t judge a book by it’s cover». I stood corrected and really enjoyed our meal here.
