I have a love/hate relationship with Chinese food, especially in RI. Most of what I’ve had so far hasn’t been great and I almost always feel ill afterwards. We were looking for a new dine-in restaurant for NYE, we took to social media to poll our friends and a few suggested Kings Garden. We did some recon a week before and tried them out. We dined for the first time on a Tuesday night and was surprised at how busy the restaurant was, figured it had to be a good sign. As soon as we were seated we were brought water & tea. I’m always disappointed when a place doesn’t start the experience with tea so I was already feeling good about this. We ordered some crab rangoons & fried dumplings to start and they were both tasty, I’m not a big fan of dumplings but I really liked these so unfortunately my husband had to share them with me! Our main entrée was the general’s chicken and pork fried rice, we both commented on how bright the chicken was.. . the sauce was thin and an appealing orange color rather then the thick brown we usually see with this dish. The chicken was lightly breaded and still crisp under the sauce and when you took a bite you could see that is was actual slices of chicken, you could see the grain in the meat so it felt less processed. The sauce was mildly spicy, I’ll probably ask for extra spicy next time. We were so pleased with this first visit that before we left we made our NYE reservation. When we returned on NYE we had the same great service and food despite them being packed. We were seated as soon as we arrived, it took a little longer for our waitress to get to us but it was insanely busy that night, once she got to us she was great and very attentive. This time we ordered a bunch of apps, scorpion bowls, beef & broccoli and more fried rice. The wait for our food was minimal considering how busy they were and when it came to the table it was hot and fresh. There wasn’t anything we didn’t enjoy. We had plenty of leftovers which were still good when re-heated the next day. This will probably be our go-to place for Chinese food from now on. I can’t speak to the authentic menu or the dim sum as we were there solely for the Americanized Chinese food. I’ve never had dim sum but the table next to us ordered a few small plates and it looked good, maybe we’ll be more adventurous and try some of those dishes too.

I love King’s Garden chicken fried rice and beef fried rice. It’s not too greasy and hits the spot when I’m craving rice. Another favorite of mine is scallion pancakes… So good!

Dim sum isn’t as great as the ones in Chinatown-Boston, but it’s pretty damn close. It’s great authentic Chinese and Americanized food. I drive the 20 mins or so to get Chinese when I want dim sum. You know the saying, if you see other Chinese people eating at a place, then you know it’s good… and it holds true for here. Never had an issue here and the service is fine. If you want to try dim sum before you try going to Chinatown, this is the place. Although the individual dim sum are a few dollars, they quickly add up… I usually end up with a tab over $ 50 each visit with family.

I go pretty much exclusively for Dim sum, which is by far the best in the area and worth going here rather than trekking to Boston or Quincy. Authentic dim sum… solid staples like congee, ha gao, chicken feet, tripe, buns etc. Both of their tripe dishes are actually fantastic. All dishes good quality. Service generally good but can be spotty especially if they are busy.

We went shopping at the Asian market so decided to stay and try one of the places around the corner in Rolfe Square. There was nothing wrong with it. The waitress was friendly and the food was good, but the ambience felt a little down trodden and the food was missing a certain pizzazz. If I’m in the neighborhood I might try it again, but I wont go out of my way to go back.

The food is good but portions are small compared to other restaurants in the area. The last time I got take out from here they added a tip to the receipt when I didn’t write one in. I didn’t notice it until I checked my bank account a couple days later.

I cannot stop thinking about Dim Sum! Just to be clear, I’ve never had Dim Sum so I have no idea how authentic it is but it was fun and delicious and I can’t wait to go back! Some background: our family and the in-laws planned on getting some Chinese on a recent Sunday afternoon. Even though King’s Garden is over 2 miles away from my house(that’s really far) I’d heard great things and we were excited to try Dim Sum so we made the trek. The restaurant was nearly empty during that time between lunch and dinner and we had the place to ourselves. We ordered the King’s Platter for the kids which consists of a bunch of appetizers and fried rice. The crab rangoons(they call them crab meat puffs) are the best I have ever had. For our meals we went with the Dim Sum menu. The waiter did not seem to mind that we were clueless and advised about how many items to order between the 4 of us. I liked how they staggered it when brought the food to the table so the food stayed hot. I enjoyed everything but the chicken feet — that was my MIL’s choice, she has fond memories of eating them as a child apparently. King’s Garden has now become my go-to Chinese restaurant.

Kings Garden has been on my list of places to get to since I realized that there were restaurants that serve dim sum in RI. I’m more than happy to have finally made it. The whole dim sum without carts concept is certainly different, but it’s something that I’m growing to like more and more. There is something to be said for the dishes coming out fresh and piping hot — and the staff paced our selections perfectly — A+. I stopped in with an old friend for a late dinner and since it’s not cart service, dim sum was still available into the evening; HUGE bonus! My friend had never tried dim sum, so I went with several old favorites that were all fantastic and would stand up to any of the places I’ve frequented in Chinatown L.A. or Diamond Bar. The waiter was super helpful as many of the dishes are listed under names that I was not familiar with, but when I asked for them as I know they are named, he was eager to assure me each was what I was looking for. Two that I usually do not order, that were very tasty were Shanghai dumplings and the Chive dumplings. My favorite part of the meal was that they actually had nai wong bao — which is one of my favorites and something I’ve had little success finding here in the biggest little state. It’s called Golden Lava Bun on the menu and I highly recommend you give it a try as your final/dessert item at any dim sum meal. I look forward to many more visits to Kings Garden and would recommend it as a go to dim sum destination to anyone who is searching.

Love me some dim sum! Small plates to share — think Asian tapas and they range b/t $ 3-$ 5 each. Been coming here for years but never wrote a review. Of course, we all want to be able to venture to Boston and surrounding area for dim sum but sometimes the drive is just too far of a stretch — yes, even Quincy and Dorchester are a hike(spoken like a true RI’er). King’s Garden fulfills my dim sum cravings enough so, was there last night. From what I know, the place has gone under new management a few years back — for a little while, the food wasn’t what I was used to but it’s gotten better. These are the some of the typical dishes we usually order — Singapore Fried Rice(made with curry and so yummmmm!), 8 Delights Chow Foon, Salted Shrimp and Squid, Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup. Everything else is off the dim sum menu, typical selection: steamed minced meat ball, peking ravioli, chicken feet(although, last night’s didn’t taste fresh), pork ribs, fried shrimp roll, crispy wing ding, beef tripe, peapod leaf dumpling, beef tripe w ginger(nothing compares to Boston though, sorry!). Then a little coconut pudding to cleanse your palate. =) There are so many other things, but too many to write They do have pictures of some dim sum items in case some ppl aren’t familiar with the different names. We’ve been coming for years, so the staff knows us pretty well and we never have an issue getting seated promptly and service is always good. Try something different than the typical Chinese food — you might surprise yourself with what you might like!

Really tasty dim sum! Rhode Island is a real dim sum desert, and it’s great to have Kings Garden here. It may not be as good as top end NYC dim sum, but it’s the best we’ve found in RI.

Classic canton dim sum. Atmosphere is that of typical Chinese restaurant, that is to say minimal on decorations or why is that there, and why is it so dark. That being said if you want good dim sum this is place. From there translucent chive dumplings, to there Sichuan style beef tripe, to their radish cakes, everything tasted unique and was filled with the rich flavors that you come to expect at a good Chinese restaurant.

We went in for lunch and ordered dim sum the flavor of the steam shrimp dumpling it taste like came out from frozen packaging, the steam pork w black bean its not like its used too, its gross. The shrimp roll very oily and king tau spareribs chewy and mostly bones. It used to be small cut pork w batter and king tao sauce We also ordered some coconut pudding to go and to find out when we get home there is long hair underneath the pudding. Disgusting. I was a regular customer but now w this changes of the food not going back till they fix the food

So, I’m definitely a «stuck in my ways» sort of person. I don’t eat a lot of Chinese Food, and I’m definitely used to it being a specific way(meaning how it was at the place I went as a child) The Hot and Sour soup was good, and I liked the pork fried rice(seriously, there was 2 pieces of pork in it… which i just picked out and enjoyed the onion and soy saucey goodness of the rice). The chow mein was… a plate of celery, AND they placed the noodles on the bottom of the plate and dumped my chow mein over it so they were all soggy by the time i got my food delivered. They should have more of a description with some of the items, as I was a bit confused by what was what– no this is noodles, this is just meat and veggies etc… a little copy can go a long way in terms of satisfying people. Took forever and a day to get drinks. I really wasn’t gonna flip if I didn’t get my pineapple passion in the pineapple glass, I just wanted to get buzzy on NYE, and my drinks coming out after others put a damper on that.

Kings Garden is our go-to Friday night Chinese food place. The wait staff can be inattentive and forgetful, the décor is dated and a bit cold, but the food is authentic and delicious! Don’t go expecting anything more than a local take out joint and you won’t be disappointed. What you get, however, is so much more. It’s a little slice of Chinatown in Rhode Island. I spent a decade in Boston eating in Chinatown on a regular basis and I can tell you kings Garden is the real deal. Get the Dim Sum. Try the soup. Be adventurous and you will be rewarded.

After the sad demise of Lucky Garden, this place has become my go-to for dim sum. In fact, I’ve only ever had dim sum here. Their menu has a decent variety and it’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning with friends. The only downside is their bubble tea is a bit weird(texturally) and bland. I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, they kindof skimp on the filling for the char siu bao. The taro & pork dumplings are deliciously rich, starchy, and covered in a crispy fried coating. I also enjoy the lotus leaf sticky rice(one of my favorite things anywhere) and the lava buns are to die for. The trick is to time exactly when you eat them so the molten custard filling is just right but hasn’t cooled down enough to fully congeal.

My favorite Chinese restaurant This is bias review, but it is based on me going to nearly 40 Chinese restaurants in the area. Absolutely delicious! The order: Scorpion Bowl for 2 — 13 bucks Spicy Beef with Peppers — 10 bucks Kings Garden Sampler — 12 bucks Wonderful beef teriyaki, pork spare ribs, chicken fingers, and and egg roll. Fresh, well cooked, and quality ingredients. You can tell the difference compared to your typical Chinese offerings around the state. Every time I eat here the food is consistently great, you can just tell that it isn’t reheated crap. Highly recommend, try it I think you’ll agree. Please never close. Thanks

I finally went to King’s Garden today. On street parking hmmm. It was quiet so I went in and sat at the bar. The hostess Daisy, awesome, by the way, took my order and recommended a beef noodle dim sum. It was the best thing I had! Shrimp balls tasted a little of old fry grease, but they were good with a little chili oil. I had beef brisket soup, which I have all the time at Silver Crystal. It was good. Not as good, but good. Plenty of skin, gristle, and fat to pick through. Big white hunks of squeak between your teeth beef by product… People eat it! Not I brother! The broth, greens, noodles were fine. I’ve got family back home, so I brought back some take out. Chinese broccoli, orange chicken, pork chow mein, and crab rangoons. Chow mein was clear and had very little flavor. Orange chicken was little battered quarter sized tidbits of chicken in a very mild sauce. Crab rangoons were yummy, of course. Chinese broccoli was very tough. I cooked it in a little olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes and made Italian broccoli! It was much better. It had to cook some more. I have since explored the«authentic menu» in the back of the book. I had shrimp wonton and noodle soup with shrimp and taro dim sum and chow chow dumplings. The soup was nice. Very light. The fried taro and shrimp was delicious albeit greasy. I got the same old grease aftertaste as last time, but they were good going down. The chow chow dumplings were little gooey bags of water chestnut, scallions, peanuts and some other unidenitfiable things. Not really my thing. I had the same steamed pork rib and chicken feet I had in Boston, and Peking ravioli. I also had shrimp rolls and steamed pork dumplings. All about the same. I like other things like the shrimp ball, beef noodle, and shrimp and taro better. Just a note… Shrimp and taro is different than the fried taro dumpling. Shrimp and taro has crispy shredded taro and is delicious. Taro dumplings look like they are filled with gopher guts. I don’t like those so much!

My review is for the dim sum menu, and only the dim sum menu. I consider myself to be kind of a dim sum snob. I often go to dim sum in Chinatown restaurants in major cities, and I’ve tried lots of different dishes and know how they should be prepared. I even make my own sometimes at home from scratch! Soooooooo… I have to say that the dim sum at King’s Garden definitely lives up to the standards I’m used to. The prices are very reasonable(especially considering the free tea you’re getting – they actually charge you for tea at dim sum halls). All of the dumplings were really good. Only comments are that the Shanghai dumplings could be more soupy, and the char siu bao could maybe have a bit more filling(it’s my favorite!). The lotus leaf with sticky rice is fantastic! I’m honestly very happy and impressed to find really good dim sum so much closer to home than going to Chinatown in Boston, New York, etc. Service isn’t stellar, but it rarely is at dim sum joints in general. I will happily make King’s Garden my go to spot for dim sum in RI.
