The Varsity Grill

In 2015, on the heels of one of our favorite burger joints closing (RIP Club Schmitz) my boyfriend and I started our own little burger challenge, on the quest to find a new go to favorite burger place (#DFWburgerquestforthebest). We created a scoring matrix, started keeping a bookmarked list on Unilocal and began our mission. We never found a perfect 10 in 2015, so we kept on. Tonight we tried The Varsity Grill and while we didn’t give it a perfect 10, it is our highest scoring place so far with an overall 9! We loved it and both agreed that this may become our new go-​to spot! The owner made a personal connection with every person in there and the food was fantastic! The burger was a thinner patty perfectly seasoned and the bun had just a hint of sweetness to it! We tried both waffle fries and onion rings and loved both. They also serve their fountain drinks with pellet ice in styrofoam cups and the place had a darling little 50s diner vibe! Can’t wait to return and so glad to have found one of the BEST burgers in DFW!

i tried the grilled chicken wrap because of a review i read and it was not delicious it was ok. i wouldn’t go back for this. it’s best to stick to burgers most restaurants won’t go wrong with that.

Everything is fresh, fresh, fresh. The burgers are as good as any you will find anywhere. The best part is they are reasonably priced. You might have to wait if you come at noon but that is because it is soooooo popular and they cook to order. The owner, Tom, is one nice man. I hope he is here for a long time. We need good places to eat in the neighborhood.

I tried this place for lunch with my husband we both had double doubles he had waffel fries and I had onion rings, it was so good and the sweet tea was amazing !!! it was actually so good that we brought the kiddos back for dinner ordered a 50 piece wings with fries and 3 flovors cooked to perfection… our new spot and tom was so nice i will be back for more

You can not get a burger this hot when it comes to your table no where but the Varsity! This place was my first Burger Joint I went to when I came to Texas last year, I’ve been back a few times since and things are always hot and on point except don’t order the battered Mushrooms they are not good although piping hot when you get them they are not hand battered they are the frozen kind not the in house battered kind. They are a bit mushy and underdone in the inside I couldn’t eat them. The place is clean Tom the owner is very friendly always asks how your food was he comes around and speak to his customers the prices are fair not cheap but fair. When I just want to eat a good Burger I go here!

Best BURGER in LAKE HIGHLANDS!!! You can’t go wrong with any item on the menu! I love the Grilled Chicken Club, the Bacon Cheeseburger is GREAT & who can say «no» to delicious Cheese Fries!!! Fried Pickles make a great appetizer especially if you are ordering the «fresh, never frozen» Hot Wings! A must try to anyone in the area or even for those who want to branch out from their regular burger joints!

I thought the lay out was a little corny, so I was a little nervous, BUT it was fantastic. A really well run business. best burger in the area

A small, sports oriented Americana place. Run by one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Fresh, fantastic food including incredible homemade potato chips. Fantastic burgers, milkshakes, and more. The shop also appears to sponsor some of the local high school sports teams, which is amazing.
A definite must.

The food speaks for it’s self fresh ingredients and a clean friendly place to bring your family. I’m here naw as we speak I love coming here a lot and I have recommended varsity to all my friends and family they love it best burgers and the taco salad is the bomb I love the burger buns I could eat the bread alone if they sold it with out the meat lol my husband loves there wings my son loves everything in there kids menu if I could I would give it a 10 stars I haven’t found any other place like varsity and I will keep coming and coming even if it means working out after I eat here lol

My BBQ Burger was good as well as the fries. I will definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu. The gentleman that helped me (owner maybe) was polite and called me by my name.

This is a classic neighborhood grill. We have been meaning to try this place out for a long time. I called in an order for pickup. The man on the line (assuming it was the owner) was incredibly friendly and helped me figure out what we should try.
When my hubby picked up the order. Between our two meals (grilled cheese & sweet potato fries and hamburger & fries and onion ring combo) it cost around $ 20. Not bad.
I enjoyed my grilled cheese. The combination of cheeses between three slices of bread was delicious! The sweet potato fries left a little bit to be desired, though. My hubby said the hamburger was good, but nothing spectacular.
We will definitely come back. The menu has a lot of items to choose from and I look forward to eating our way through the menu.

I love a sports and family oriented restaurant, and varsity grill fits that category like a glove. I adore the manager who actually remembers your name.
The wings are nice size and tasty. In addition, it feels great to see your college flag hanging above the ceiling. It’s the little things like that that truly makes this place unique.

I have eaten here over the years some ½ dozen times and found their burgers OK, but not spectacular. I’m not one to bash a place (as you can see from my reviews) and might normally give 3 stars, but my experience today was abysmal.
I entered at 2:10pm (on a Saturday) and should have immediately turned around and left. There were some 40 people already in there, of which 30 or so were pretty young and loud children. I got in line behind one woman and after a short wait, my order was taken by the owner. He acknowledged that I was behind quite a few people but stated that since it was just me he would try to bump my order up. OK, thanks.
So I sat down expecting a bit longer than the average 10 minutes for my order. Well, at 25 minutes after placing my order, not the owner nor the gal running food had come over to me to let me know that they knew it was taking a long time for my order or to apologize or anything. I decided that if my meal wasn’t out in another 5 minutes I was leaving. And, I did just that. No meal. Just keep my $ 9 as that ‘s the last money you will get from me. There are so many non-​fast food competitors that will work harder for my business why waste it on a guy (the owner) that is not particularly cheerful, engaging or frankly very nice (my wife knows him from her church).

One of my favorite local places to eat in the Lake Highlands area. Though known for their great burgers and fresh made buns, I usually get the grilled Chicken wrap and it is delicious. Very family friendly and sports themed atmosphere. Staff is overwhelmingly friendly and Tom (owner) is very personable and rounds the area to ensure the food meets your expectations. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!!!

Excellent food. The burgers are some of the best in Dallas and their chicken sandwiches and malts rock too. This is an owner run local spot and they always know your name and provide great service.
Never been unhappy with the food there. Highly recommend.

I had a hard time deciding between the Philly Cheese Steak and the Italian Beef. I ended up with the Italian Beef and it was amazing! Most of these I have tried, the bread gets soggy and the sandwich falls apart. It was the best Italian Beef sandwich ever! This was my first time there and everyone that came in the owner knew them by name which was pretty cool. Highly recommend this place! Also it was very clean.

Great food and a fun diner-​type/​sports bar atmosphere. Owner is very engaging.

Really great neighborhood grill with wide choices on menu. Fantastic cheese fries with jalapeños, onions etc. Good service & 50’s-60’s décor & music. Fun place with good food.

Very solid neighborhood «Burgers, Sandwiches, Wings, and more» restaurant. A huge menu of 8 appetizers, chili, 9 kinds of salads, 5 kinds of wraps, 13 styles of burgers, french fries (and cheesy ones), onions rings, 14 styles of sandwiches, and chicken wings with a choice of 17 flavors. Order at the counter. Family oriented. Very clean. BYOB. Sports (especially college football) themed, although not a «sports bar» by any means. Ingredients are always fresh and top quality. Never waited more than ten minutes to get our food. Prices seem right on the money for the quality. Can get crowded at peak lunch and dinner hours with a slight line to order your food. Been many times, we will return often. Very cool owner operator always ready to treat the customers as friends.
