I’ve given this place 3 chances since the reopening. Here’s the breakdown Food: Mediocre Drinks: Way overpriced Service: THEWORST!!! My last visit there was during Sunday Brunch. Nothing like a cold breakfast, served on cold plates on a cold winter morning, with a wait staff that has a huge amount of don’t give a damn. My advice — Shut the doors, and move on to the next thing.

I’ve only been here for brunch but I have to say the lunch menu looks pretty great too. I really like that the mimosas are champagne-dominant! They used to have a build your own bloody mary bar, doesn’t look like it made it through the renovations though. Not to worry, you can still get vodka or tequila versions. Food wise, they have breakfast enchiladas and tacos along with burritos, huevos, etc. Only downside is the weird lounge-y jazz band. Completely unnecessary and detracting. Hopefully Mezcal isn’t paying them!

Wow… I am really impressed by the new menu and updated décor. I have been coming to Mezcal for over 10 years and I am amazed each time I come in. Mezcal always have a warm and inviting staff ready to give me a new and memorable experience each time. The bartenders are well informed on classic tequila knowledge and love to show you what’s new in the tequila world. They do tons of special events like Beyond Jose… The weekly FREETEQUILA tasting and education every Wednesday from 6pm-8pm, live music on Saturdays, bottomless Mimosa brunch every weekend with live Latin Jazz on Sundays from noon-3pm, Taco Tuesdays, and more. Check out Colfax’s Original Tequila Bar! I love this place!

If I could describe the queso fundido in four words, it would be «pure, unadulterated sex dip.» This place is legit. Their ancho margarita is a must try.

I really do enjoy the food, but it’s very pricey and the portions aren’t super filling. They also don’t do combos anymore which is kind of a deal breaker for me. I told the manager about the lack of combos when he was asking for critiques and scoffed at the idea. He said, «he would be happy if he didn’t have to do combos ever again». Well every other Mexican restaurant in Colorado does, and it’s ridiculous for me to spend 10 extra dollars just to get a chili relleno with my meal.(They make a very good relieno just not worth 10 dollars.)

I went here back in late November for brunch. I had the steak, and some beef tacos. The steak was super chewy, but not bad. The tacos were itty bitty. I’m a big boy at 6’2″ 245… I left hungry, but it may be ok for the average jane/joe. The real draw was the unlimited mimosas. They had several flavors, the one I can remember was blood orange. Needless to say, I got a luhl bit tips. Not at a bad place, but I have more exploring to do for a brunch bro. pros –Mom and pop shop(I like to support local spots) –The bathroom cracks me up, they have some adult comics. I went to take a pic, some guy walked in, and looked at me like«wtf?»… did not get the pic –Bottomless mimosas. cons –Portion size may not be sufficient for those with a bigger apetite. –Chewy steak

I really, really love mezcal… the liquor. Unfortunately, Mezcal, the restaurant, does not live up to its namesake. I have been here many times; my husband and I even had our first date here a few years ago. It has sadly gone down hill in the last year or so. I had been craving a good mezcal margarita and as there are not many choices in the Westminster area, my husband and I made the trek into the big city to go to Mezcal. We knew what we wanted as soon as we sat down, but the waiter refused to take our order, saying he would bring us chips and be back. When he finally did come back, we ordered the queso fundido and our drinks. After bringing our drinks, we did not see our server again for at least 10 minutes. I was finally able to flag him down and asked him how our queso was coming, and he said he had not put in the order. Whoops #1. When the queso finally did come out, it resembled more of a cheese soup than an actual queso. It looked much like french onion soup. It was pretty gross. Their queso fundido used to be delicious. My husband ordered a beer, the waiter forgot it. Whoops #2. We finally had to ask one of the food runners to check on the beer. When we got our bill, he had charged us for food that a different table ordered. Whoops #3. When we pointed this out, he thanked us for catching the mistake, did not even offer an apology. Perhaps if this had been my first experience like this at Mezcal, I would give them another chance. When I was last in there, it was for happy hour and we were charged full price for everything. It took many days to get ahold of the manager to correct this. Again, I really love mezcal, but I’m going to have to resort to drinking it elsewhere. UPDATE: I was contacted by one of the owners after I posted my previous review, offering me free dinner and drinks if I would consider giving Mezcal another chance. I went in last night(1÷29÷16) and had a much better experience. The service was great, though I am not sure if that was because our server knew we had a bad experience before or if she was actually good at her job. The food was also much better this time. I don’t think I will ever try their«queso» again, unless they take it back to the old style. Overall, my experience last night was much better than the last few times I have been there and I’d definitely be willing to go back. Hopefully it was not a fluke, though…

The new menu is fantastic! You can tell there is a lot of time that has been put into keeping this place around. Historical place in Denver in the midst of much history. Great staff, great experience of music, fun & tequila! Fish tacos are my favorite. $ 1TACOTUESDAY?! Ok. Padron peppers from Spain? They’re like shishito peppers. smoky & sweet. Love this place. Looking forward to telling more people & seeing this business bloom!

I gave this place another chance, but unfortunately it is still mediocre and overpriced. Mexican food should not be so hard to get right.

Enjoyed this place quite a bit! Came here on Taco Tuesday to have a cheaper night out, and was pleasantly surprised. The tacos were $ 1 each, and pretty decent. Beer was cheap and of course awesome, and the server was polite, spunky, attentive, knowledgeable, and prompt with everything. The tacos weren’t the best in town, but $ 1 each is hard to beat. It is close by, within walking distance, and was a pleasurable experience. Will be back at some point for more Taco Tuesday.

Excellent food here. Meets my northern California fresh Mexican standards. Lots of choices for vegetarians, which is a huge plus and appreciated by compassionate people. Warm chips, delicious salsas. They have nopales(cactus)on the menu which is very difficult to find in colorado. Huge burritos, lots of flavor, If they start making a veg burrito with mushrooms and cactus I will eat here on a weekly basis. Also please bring back the Chile rellano burrito. I didn’t see it on the menu last time, and it was delicious!

I wasn’t expecting an authentic Mexican restaurant or anything, but I was expecting someone at the bar to know about Mexican mixed drinks. I was very sad to find out that no one knew how to make a Vampiro here. We also paid about 6 dollars for maybe 4 ounces of guacamole, which is a little ridiculous. It may have been a different experience before it shut down and reopened, but for me it will remain a disappointment.
I haven’t been here in awhile because the food was so inedible the last time I was there so decided to try it again. We ordered queso and chips which was the most disgusting greasy mess of white something that congealed about 5 minutes after getting it served. I’ve made Velveeta with Rotel queso that is FAR better than this. We also ordered the Carnitas street tacos. We must have gotten the bottom of the dried up carnitas from the cold container because that’s exactly what they were. All dried up and cold with nothing more than a huge handful of raw onions on top. No cilantro, no limes, nothing else. And the teeny, tiny bit of sauce that they managed to squeeze into the tiny metal container gave us a few drops of sauce. Guess that sauce must be pretty precious. The only bright side, once again are the margaritas. Won’t be coming back again for a long time. I can’t believe this place still stays in business with the disgusting food they have, which is too bad because they actually used to be pretty good a few years ago. Hey Mezcal, PLEASE get a new Chef and menu, it would be great to actually have decent Mexican food in the hood. Thank GOD there’s Pinches tacos, just up on Josephine!

Stumbled upon this place on my way to a show at The Bluebird, although I didn’t eat, I really liked the atmosphere, and the drinks were fantastic, and the staff was real nice! Next time I’ll make sure my agenda is to eat and drink, instead of just drinking lol.

Woohoo! Thought Mescal closed for good but it was going under a major refresh… well was a fan before and bigger fan now… They’ve not just refreshed the décor and the menu, but the they’ve overhauled the service — WOW! Great service all around! Definitely have the pupusas! Salvadorian awesomeness! Also had three different kinds of tacos — go for the pork belly tacos! Only issue — NOTE that they’ve changed the happy hour from 4−6p to 3−5p — I really think they should change it back — but the happy hour menu is great, and the management decided to give us the special pricing :)

This place is trying to sell you on their ambiance and décor. They really did a good job making it look inviting from the outside. Inside, well, it’s no less inviting — I liked the lay out and the décor. It has a pretty good vibe to it as well. The problem is that I have a hard time justifying so much money on dishes or drinks I could have at other Mexican restaurants. For instance, the asada tacos were about $ 10 or so for three of them. The problem is that they were street tacos. Asada street tacos run $ 1-$ 1.50 each. And the drinks — margaritas or otherwise — are about $ 8 an up. I’d probably willingly pay for that at an upscale spot but this place just doesn’t justify to me personally. Obviously, they need to make a profit but if these prices were lower I’d definitely come back but there are other places I could go instead for much less.

Dirty place with nasty food. We were sat at a set table with food on it. The waitress was oblivious to it as she laid our menus on it. I had the enchiladas both the chicken and beef had almost no meat in them. The berg was hamburger, cheep product and maybe a tablespoon served. The fajitas my friend had tasted like it was rotten, like dirty feet greasy and very low quality meat. Our waiters asked us how things were and we said«ok». She replied«not very good is it. Then I agreed and said«it’s pretty bad». She thought I was joking and walked away. The refrained Beas were tasty and why it got 2 stars it should only get one. I understand why this place is mostly empty no matter what time I pass by. I think I’ll pass this place by in the future.

Very sad. I loved this neighborhood staple before it’s renovation and new menu. The service was great. Greeted promptly and welcomed feedback on our experience. The food was not. Ordered tacos and felt disappointment in just looking at them… Tasted disappointment in eating them. Gave my feedback afterwards for improvement, but sorry to say I can’t come back. I’ll forever miss the delicious salsas and guacamole old Mezcal served. The variety of bottled sauces on each table, and the Al Pastor tacos. It will never be the same. *tear*

There are those places that fill a spot in a neighborhood or community and when it’s not there — well, there is a void. Mezcal is one of those spots and we are so glad they are back! Management and culinary team are most definitely working in tandem and it shows in the service and the food. Warm chips with just the right amount of salt — two different salsa that were both delicious and flavorful without tons of heat. House Mezcal Marg, Paloma and Sangria — all fresh and spot on. Roasted Padron Peppers are my favorite things ever!!! Queso Fundido was flavorful and layered with smokey goodness. Not a huge serving and I appreciate that with Queso Fundido because otherwise we keep eating it! Pupusas with a lightly pickled slaw were tasty and made from scratch. Entrees that we tried were Carne Asada Tacos, Pork Belly Tacos and the Chile Rellano. All fresh, filling, served with rice and beans. The black beans were some of the best I have ever had and the refried beans are made with duck fat so they are amazing. Shared a sopapilla with Ice Cream family-style that was a great way to end the night! Hip interior with lots to check out on the walls — staff was super attentive and happy to be there.

This place is awesome! I knew it was going to be good when I saw that they’ve got El Yucateco hot sauce on the table. One of my favorites! We wound up here for brunch because I wanted a good Bloody Mary. Mezcal’s Bloody Mary is medium sized, flavorful, and doesn’t cost much. They’ve got a garnish station set up inside where you can add olives, jalapenos, garlic, cheese, bacon, and a few other things. Perfect! We were seated right away. The patio is nice and shady, the service is friendly, and the food is delicious. I ordered a frito pie, so it wasn’t exactly the most sophisticated meal, but it was exactly what I was looking for(especially with a generous dose of the aforementioned hot sauce). Definitely recommended!

I’m disappointed that this place hasn’t ended up being my favorite neighborhood haunt. All the components are there but it just misses the mark. Pros: 1. Absolutely gorgeous. Beautifully lit on the outside with a gorgeous patio and the inside is to die for. This place is a feast for your eyes and has a comfy cozy atmosphere. 2. Service. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and very well trained in being polite and accommodating. Pros end there though. Everything else is a con, sadly. The food is just so-so and costs a PRETTYPENNY! Very expensive and just nothing special or particularly flavorful at all, in fact lacking in flavor. Even the margaritas didn’t satiate. Nope even after a couple attempts: very disappointing restaurant.
