Had the BBQ beef sandwich, the meat was mostly fat trimmings from ribs. The sauce was man-wichesque. Wouldn’t waste my money there, it’s just shitty.

This spot is on the greenbelt & I’ve ridden my bike by here dozens of times wondering how it was. Today I got the chance to find out. Let’s have the good news first, shall we? It’s really close to the greenbelt & will provide some sort of nutrients in a pinch if I’m feeling weak & unable to continue my journey. Now for the rest. And I’ll come back & fix this as needed if needed. That’s because there was a steady stream of traffic coming & going while I was there. So there must be something good about it. However I did not find that good thing. I had a pulled pork sandwich with chips & a drink. The sandwich was served on a non-toasted hoagie roll which rapidly turned back to dough upon introduction to the slurry. It was nothing but ‘meat’, sauce & the bread. My first impression was Sloppy Joes from middle school or Kenny’s gramma’s house. Then I realized it was a little worse. I’ve had this sauce before. It’s mostly ketchup. Lots of it. I think half the meat weight was ‘sauce’(read mostly ketchup). This ‘sandwich’ would pass for a free soup kitchen but not a $ 10 combo. Oh yeah, I paid $ 9.50 for this ‘sandwich’, a small bag of chips & a drink. I’d say fair price would be about a dollar. And that’s for the drink alone just for making it available & keeping it cool. The chips were fine(although predictable bag chips) but the awful of the ‘sandwich’ cancels that. So I’d say this meal was only worth maybe a dollar. Actually the drink wound up being the best part. You get to pour your own instead of dealing with a cup full of ice. Refills are 80 cents by the way, which I’ll go on and call weak. I’m trying hard to find redeeming qualities, but they aren’t coming. This ‘food’ experience was a special kind of bad.

like others, I had passed this place MANY times and always wondered about it — so last night I stopped in for«To-Go» for two. I won’t be back suffice it to say ‘cuz it is just not ‘up to snuff’ as far as BBQ goes. I found the sauce bland and unremarkable and not enough in the to-go bag.

So I’ve passed this place over a dozen times doing the typical, «I need to stop there.» For being a local joint it had a very Texas feel, not the best kept, smokey, meatey, to tell you the truth I was excited! In Texas that usually means you are in for something amazing. That fell flat, very, vey flat… The pulled pork and brisket tasted over BBQ’d & very reminiscent of the stuff you get in the freezer aisle at Wal Mart. I was rooting for this place out the gate, but sorry, two stars is generous.

Smokey’s has been around forever! Even back when a lot of Westminster was still open fields. We used to ride dirt bikes in the area in and around the sand pits which used to cover a large portion of this valley and after riding we’d head over to Smokey’s for a BBQ beef sand or sometimes a sausage sand. They were here long before Bennnet’s, or Famous Dave’s, or Brother’s any of the other chains came to town. Before I had my driver’s license they were the only BBQ joint I knew existed and as such I liked their food a lot. Soon there after though I got wheels and found out about places like Frank’s, M&D’s, and Daddy Bruce’s and Smokey’s lost out. They were my first though and that first cut thing rings true. Beef too long in the steam table soaking in BBQ sauce still tastes okay but since I’ve been a KCBS certified judge for a few years and have learned what great BBQ really is, this definitely isn’t that so the 3 stars is mainly for nostalgia’s sake.

AWFUL. I am sorely disappointed. I mean I am a BBQ aficionado and that no one had ever HEARD of this place should have been my first sign. I had the BBQ beans and a BBQ beef sandwich. The BBQ beef tastes like the«Lloyds» brand stuff you get in a plastic container in the freezer section of your grocery store and stop eating in 5th grade. Its horribly oversauced, and I would be SHOCKED if it had not been frozen prior to my eating it. The sauce is tomato based with a slight kick to it, it overpowers the beef which had no smoke notes to speak of. It also tasted slightly soapy. The beans were awful. I had one spoonful and I was done with them. They had no smoke flavor, no meat in them, and they were watery. If I could give 0 stars I wouldn’t because the ladies working this place are very nice, but its the second worst BBQ I’ve ever had in my entire life.

Smokey’s is a funky little BBQ shop hidden in the industrial section of North Denver. The sauce definitely lives up to its name with a robust, smokey aftertaste unlike anything I’ve had before. The prices are cheap, the portions huge. The dining room has a gritty retro vibe that reminds me of something out of a David Lynch project. A unique experience for sure.

Hidden gem, would have never know except for some local knowledge. Gritty and great. Can’t go wrong with: Bbb Ribs, Potatoe salad(no onions, thanks), beans, BBQ beef sandwich, BBQ Turkey sandwhich, different Jerkey(Black Peeper beek, buffalo, etc). Sauce was legit too, although the ribs hardley needed them. Flavor of the baby back ribs was amazing. Hope to return next time in town.

Gotta love Smokey’s My family has been coming here to Smokey’s over 20yrs. it’s that good. They are a family run business that has lasted since 1969. They slow smoke all their meats in a real smoker with real wood. and it’s mmm. mmm. good. Everything from the brisket, to the pulled pork is heavenly. You can even get a whole smoked chicken for just 5 bucks and some change. you can’t beat that anywhere. The potato salad and all the fixings are top notch as well as the sauce, it’s thick spicy, sweet and delicious. Smokey’s has stood the test of time… and when you try it you’ll know why…;) PS would give it 5 stars as the only drawback is the seating.(mainly take out) but the food is Awesome!
