Winchell’s Doughnut House

Love this location and the owner! The doughnuts are always delicious.

This place is one of the worse doughnut shops I’ve ever been in and that’s saying something as I’m usually not that picky about where it eat.
The store looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years. My shoes stuck to the floor like I was in a porno arcade. The display was so cloudy it looked like the glass was frosted. I got four doughnuts for my girlfriend and I. The guy behind the counter acted like I asked him to do push-​ups and jammed all four into a tiny bag destroying two in the process.
Do not, I repeat, do not step foot in this shop!

Agreed with Jarred — prior reviews are not fair (and frankly I don’t believe them). Doughnuts are great, the lady behind the counter was a sweetheart, and I had no problems at all. Sure its not a fancy, brand-​spanking-​new chain, but I really don’t care.

Who cares if it’s ‘sketch’?! It’s an old donut joint, which happens to have the best donuts in town, by far. Terrible prior reviews, this place has excellent quality overall and nice people.
Recent update: New staff, donuts are a bit ‘crispy’.

I really try to avoid this winchell’s doughnut shop! I have been here 2 times too many and the results are always bad! First time I went in I could tell it wasn’t very clean and they only had about ⁵⁄₆ choices on this evening. Okay, I can work with that, I’m not that picky. I get the doughnuts home and the were hard and far from fresh! I ended up throwing the dozen away. Second time I go in, which I knew I shouldn’t go but it was kinda on my way to where I was going. I go in and it looks like no one has cleaned that place since the last time I was there. That was 6 months ago. There were two choices of doughnuts, one twist and 3 muffins. Told me these were my choices. I saw two racks of doughnuts sitting in the back and asked him, what about those? He said NO, TWO HOURS OR WHAT YOU SEE! Well sir, see this now! Your wonderful Unilocal review and a call to the health department! DON’T Go here. It is a wast of time and possibly your health too!

This place is pretty damn sketch. As a college freshman I ended up here cramming delicious doughnuts — even sober they’re pretty damn good. (Everything else is a much different story. Do not stray from the doughnuts if you come here! That also means no beverages!)
That all ended when I saw a cockroach running around the doughnut display case — if you can see cockroaches frolicking about in the light, you can imagine how many are actually there. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but a roach in the display case of all things was a little too much.
Yet, I caught a whiff of Winchell’s doughnuts on the air today, and I wished I was blissfully ignorant enough to go back and eat there again!
Final thoughts: Eat at your own risk. Also, I wouldn’t recommend going there alone at night.

Pretty good donuts and gas station-​flavored coffee. That’s it. The place is small and dirty. I wasn’t expecting much. It matches the neighborhood. I’m sipping the coffee as I type… It tastes like a combination of Folgers crystals, compost and old lady perfume.
I don’t eat donuts often, but there seems to be a fried dough void in Denver. I did a search and there is only one Dunkin Donuts in this city. How can that be???
