one last night of black labels and karaōke recently. usually get here at least a couple times a year, especially during opening day. nicely dark and dirty and cheap. most of the time i have been in the back during the day, but night time is good for some terryoke. too bad it’s gong away for a crappy new stadium. love, juston

Totally not the place a bunch of whiny hipster kids would ever want to come, clutching their iPhones and shoving people up to the bar while patting themselves on the backs for being so authentic hardcore Detroit. (But if that’s not you, I’ll meet you there.)

Karaōke was great! But someone was smoking in the bar?!? What a bummer…

The Terry-oke is definitely a highlight. There were some surprisingly decent karaōke folks when we went — I don’t expect much from karaōke singers. Drinks were great. I had to adjust to being around smoke again. Also, you can bring in food from other places which is kinda cool. Is it dive? Yes. But is doesn’t claim to be anything different. Diverse crowd which always great to see. If you’re looking for a fun spot to sing your heart out this is your place.

I just dont get it. I’m all for hanging out at a dive, but this place is a hole. I’m not a big fan of karaōke, so maybe that was it? Or the smell of cigs? Dirty plastic tables and chairs? I dunno. There wasn’t anything going on. Just people sitting… in a dark smoky place, drinking horrible beer. I can’t imagine this place being around too much longer. I’m sure with the new arena coming in it will either be torn down, or bought out.

One of my fav«dive» bars. If I’m in the area I always end up here. Great staff and UN pretentious which is important to me.

Another hidden gem of a Detroit bar. I’ve only met one of the bartenders but he was nice! You don’t need to be a regular to feel comfortable here. LOVE this place.

You might want to come here before they tear this place down to build a new wings stadium…

The pies are amazing. The karaōke is so much fun. You will smell like cigarettes when you leave. The best part about this place is that all different types of people come together and party for the evening. I love the comet bar.

I accidentally stumbled into this bar after seeing a concert in Detroit that night. My friend that was with me drove by and was all«hey, let’s stop in here», sure, why not. Well. I was wearing a pink crocheted poncho and he was gay as ever. As we walked in, time literally stood still. we were in a biker bar. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared. What do you do right? Well, we strolled on up to the bar and got us some Black Labels, that’s what we did. No one bothered us, but it was quite odd. Long white foldable tables spread out with some folding chairs, karaōke workin’ it in the front of the bar, some metal rock show going on in the back yard. My friend commented that there were no blue jeans here, just black jeans lol. After one drink we skedaddled. It wasn’t a bad place, I was just wearing the wrong attire. **Bonus Points** Our car wouldn’t start when we left. Good thing the 2 bums outside were«watching our car» and were there to «help diagnose the problem»…Awesome!

Gotta love people looking for a dive, then they turn around and piss up a storm cause the place is smoky! Hey, Sarah S., guess what — I don’t smoke cancer sticks, I don’t even drink alcohol, and I like the Comet Bar! It is what it is– a dive bar. A smoke-easy, if you will. Believe it or not, this place used to be even way grimier, though it still has Tom Waitsy character to spare. Dangerously Delicious Pies aren’t going to give Bucharest Grill a run for its money as the best damn restaurant to operate out of a bar in the D, but they sure do hit the spot. The«Hot Rod» I had was plenty tasty, served up on an aluminum pie plate. Didn’t expect a side of field greens with balsamic vinagrette. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great little salad — it just didn’t seem all that«punk». Guess we’ll all lose punk points together on that one, boys, cause it was good. I don’t know if they still serve absinthe here, but I can remember drinking one and watching South Park here; that was a good time. And shows in the backyard are a blast. Miss the dirty old trailer they used to have back there. Some good times there as well. And now, the reason the good people of Unilocal read my bar reviews, how was the CRANBERRYJUICE? It was good, only cost a dollar, but they served it to me in the mixed drink-sized solo cup, not the bigger one most places use for waters and virgin drinks. I should knock them down to one star for that, but hey, it’s their dive bar; I’ll live with it.

Love it! We were on a little weekday trip through the fine state of Michigan to see our ball team play and drink in the afternoon. I made it a point to check out local/divey bars on Unilocal before leaving home. This place was so fun, it was the only one on the list we made it to! We got there shortly after the game ended and there were quite a few people in there. We grabbed a beer and sat over on the sidelines to watch all the action. We were able to move up to the bar not long after that and chatted with Nine with bartender. We loved this place! They had everything I like to drink in excess– Sweet Tea Vodka and lemonade, Jameson and Diet Ginger Ale and Coors Light. We had fun, played some tunes, made friends with everyone there and just had a really good time. It was a great way to drink away the afternoon. If we lived here I think this could be our late night hangout. This is on my radar for our next trip.

There are not enough words to describe how fabulous this spot is. Yes it’s smoky. Yes it smells like piss. Yes your ass will hurt from sitting on the plastic folding chairs. But all of these things make this dive way better. While I haven’t been to any night other than for Terry-oke, this place has the best karaōke in Detroit. Hands down. Really mixed and interesting crowd who is super supportive of everyone that sings. The drinks are dirt cheap and strong. This place is really fun. I promise.

A major disappointment for sure. After trying to find a dive-y karaōke place near my parents house on a Saturday night, we decided that we had to try the Comet Bar. Walk in, take a look around, totally think that we’ve found our kind of place, until we notice… hmm, this place still effing stinks even though the smoking ban has been in place for MONTHS. Oh yeah, that’s because the Comet Bar isn’t abiding by the smoking ban. We saw at least three people puffing away. And yes, my high horse and I turned right around and left. Sorry, don’t need cancer today, thanks. I know that some places worried about losing clientele because of the smoking ban, but honestly, my family and many, many people I know have gone out more, stayed out later, and spent more money at places since it’s gone into effect because we can still breathe by the end of the night. And I’m from Chicago where the ban is in effect as well. We’ve just gotten gratefully used to no smoking. Sorry, Comet Bar, I’ll be back when you decide to abide by the rules…

As a product of the Cass Corridor, I have come to appreciate the people who frequent the area. With that being said, this place had a great bar staff, and the stiff drinks(and very well priced!!! I mean very well priced;) helped me ignore the fact that the Karaōke lady continually put people ahead of me!!! With a bridal party coming in an hour after we submitted our slip, we saw them and a host of others go before us. In karaōke land it is a major no-no to see five different people sing five different; yea that’s a total of 25 songs and not once did she call our name. I may sound a little bitter about that, and that’s because I am! But back to the greatness of the bar! The friendly bar staff and staggering patrons made me feel right at home! Thanks guys for a freakin awesome time: D

I agree that Terry-oke is most definitely one of the main attractions here. The bar itself is indeed nice and dive-y, in the right way. The crowd seems to be a good mix — everyone all jumbled together at long banquet-style folding tables. One thing I find a little odd is the somewhat fancy flat-screen TVs, but hey — I guess flat-screen TVs are old news now, so much so that dive bars have ‘em! The karaōke skills I’ve witnessed here have ranged from abysmal to excellent — and while people will get really into a spot-on performance(just saw a version of Back to Black that rivaled Winehouse herself, IMO), people will also be reasonably supportive if your vocal skills aren’t quite tops, either. Everyone just seems here to have a good time — no pretension allowed. This should be the case at all dive bars, but there are always some that seem to have a secret code. Not here — it feels like everyone and anyone is welcome. The fact that they serve cans of Black Label and bottles of Schlitz warms my heart.

Crazy, crazy, crazy place. Smokey, divey, in the middle of nowhere. Great place to go to hang out w/a good mix of people who love their songs. There’s this woman named Terry who runs karaōke — so the whole event is renamed«Terry-okie». It even says that in the song book(which is quite thorough). There’s also an old dude who will get up there and rock it out. That’s how I want to be when I get that age. Good times. I hope to be back.
