Reader’s Digest Condensed Version: Professional movers who gave professional, efficient, and friendly service and even helped me decide best way to arrange the furniture. When you are getting quotes — make sure you know whether the quote you are given is a «Not to Exceed» or a «Non Binding»… always go with the Not To Exceed if you don’t like surprises! — — — — — — — — — — — — I moved again — because life was just becoming too calm and predictable and there is nothing like the«thrill of the hunt» every morning when you wake up to find the most mundane things like underwear, toothpaste, shoes! Last time I moved, I used TROSA and had an ok experience with them. Since then, my baby grand grew up into a fully grown Steinway Model L(6 feet long — thanks Aunt Sally) and didn’t want to trust it to TROSA. This time, I got a recommendation from my boss about Hilldrup and gave them a call. They came out the next morning and gave me a quote and were extremely efficient. It was about 750 bucks higher than I was expecting but they were professional, on time and it was a «not to exceed» quote — meaning that if it took more time, I would not pay anything more… if they were able to do it in less time, I would get money back. Decided to get a quote from TROSA just to compare and contrast since they new the house, the move etc. Sure enough, TROSA came in about 350 bucks less than Hilldrup. They had ALL the records from my previous move… they were able to tell me that it took 5.5 hours, exactly how many pounds, boxes etc. It was still higher than I was expecting — especially since this time I was not having them pack ANY boxes. Then I started reading the TROSA quote — it was«non-binding quote»… in other words, it could come in significantly higher the day of the move and then you were scrambling to either shake down your new neighbors for spare change or deciding what you could leave on the truck! I told them that they knew exactly what my move cost and how much effort it was since they had it in their records and that it should also be a «not to exceed» quote. They said the only way they would do «not to exceed» was if I added an extra hour — which basically made it cost about as much as Hilldrup. I went with Hilldrup. Everything leading up to the move was extremely professional. Debbie from the office kept in touch every step of the way to let me know exactly what to expect and when to expect it. The day of the move, the team showed up and they were like a well-oiled machine. They knew exactly how to work together to get things done, stay out of each others way and ensure that everything was taken care of. They quickly emptied out the old house and we were on pace to beat the estimate by 2 hours. On the final walkthrough at the old house, the crew chief even noticed a piece that they had missed — while I was looking right at it and it didn’t register — the infamous 200-lb safe that TROSA had left in the middle of the living room 2.5 years ago. The crew chief was way more with-it than I was(which wasn’t hard considering I literally stayed up ALLNIGHTLONG trying to clear the decks for them). Go over the new house and again, they were very helpful and accommodating. Could help me figure out how to arrange everything in a much smaller house even from an aesthetic standpoint! They knew I had not gotten any sleep so made sure I had at least 1 bed fully assembled so I could crash after they left. They had absolutely no issues with the piano despite the fact that it was bigger and there were fewer men. All in all, they got the move done 2 hours faster than the estimate resulting in a decent refund check. Both houses were spared any major damage beyond some marks on the steps that could easily be wiped off. I haven’t had the courage to look into my Christmas Ornament boxes since those weren’t exactly packed with care(that is on me!)… They did leave the porch swing over at the old house … again, I feel like that was on me since they made sure I walked through the house to ensure that everything was loaded that I wanted to have loaded. There were a couple of things where Hilldrup was more«conservative» than Trosa: – they would not take my bed out through the window due to safety concerns for the crew. – they would not move a floor lamp that had a glass tray because they were concerned that it would break. – as I said, they did miss the porch swing — but they did catch the safe that I had missed. However, all in all, it was a much smoother and efficient moving experience with less issues than TROSA. Next time around, I will definitely go with Hilldrup again. They are professional movers who know how to get stuff done and work with each other… they aren’t learning on the job. AND, they were much more cost effective than TROSA.
