I’m a Durham native and have seen a lot of places like this come & go. I always get the Hibachi Shrimp with only broccoli and white sauce. I disagree with these other reviews, but to each his/her own. I love Neo Japan.

The chicken was rubbery, the vegetables(aka a pile of onions and 3 broccoli florets) were greasy, and the«white sauce» is pretty much just mayonnaise.

I should have read the reviews before trying. I got the veggie option. Should have been called the onion option because that’s about all it was. It’s obvious that they are skimping and using the least expensive routes. The few mushroom pieces were sliced paper thin and the carrots were shredded. There was some broccoli and zucchini but not much. It was not good.

Why do places like this have out a tip jar? I have to order at a register and go up and get my food. What service am I tipping on??? I only ordered tempura… Here is how it was: NOTGOODATALL. It was not served for dining in but in Styrofoam to Go containers on a tray. It is not panko breading but weird crunchy corn meal stuff. ANDDIRTY looks for not adding a tip to my charge prior to receiving my food.

Adequate alternative, if you want fast food; but not the standard sandwich or burger. Service was fast & friendly; but, flavors were absent(ya’ gotta have the white sauce or something else to give flavor). Other alternatives nearby are better; but might also cost more. Two dinners plus soft drinks for ~$ 18.

YUCK! This was my first and last time eating there. I was the only customer(which means they weren’t busy) and I wanted to dine in. All of the tables were filthy. My food was not hot. I am a huge fan of the«white sauce» when I go to hibachi places. Their white sauce comes out a pump and when it dispensed, it came out separated and bubbly. As I was sitting at my filthy table disgusted wondering if I chance the bubbly white sauce, I heard someone from behind the counter clear a large«luggie» from their throat. That did it for me… I tossed my food in the trash. It was a waste of my money but I won’t end up at the health dept in a few days!

This is only for when you need something filling and starchy to soak up some alcohol. I’ve tried the hibachi chicken and the teriyaki steak & shrimp. Orders come up quickly but the food is barely serviceable. No real flavor depth at all(the garlic sauce can help some with this) and the steak did not seem to be a very quality cut at all. Can’t recommend it.

The only thing I can say about this place is that their food isn’t good. Will never return.

I ordered some food and arrived within 20 min to pick it up. Upon asking for my food I was asked what I ordered. I told them and they said no one put it in. So I had to wait an additional 15 min for them to prepare my half cooked steak and shrimp because they forgot to write the order down :/

Mediocre at best. We had the hibachi ribeye and hibachi chicken with most soup and fried dumplings. Miso soup was a stale mix though nicely hot. Dumplings were deep fried which we knew. They were OK. Chicken was good but ribeye was almost all fat. A bare sprinkling of my favorite part(the veggies) and bland noodles and fried rice. The mustard and ginger sauces were good. So many other options for this type of restaurant. I don’t see going back.

This place is very clean and impressive to the eye. Food is decent but lacking in flavor. Ho hum. Large portions for $. I have only been here once. Had Terriaki chicken. Bland. White sauce is decent. Cheesiest plastic fork I have ever eaten with. It would hardly penetrate a cooked zucchini! Overall evaluation: I would come back while working for a Japanese quick fix but I would definitely search out better if I was really looking for good Japanese food!

I went here thinking that Japanese food would be served — this is not the case. You’ll pay anywhere from about 7 – 10 bucks for an ‘entrée’, which roughly translates to ‘cheap, tasteless cuts of meats with unseasoned zucchini and huge slabs of onion’. Both myself and my boyfriend were also stabbed in the mouth by chicken bones. I decided to get a 3 dollar side of crab rangoon, too. What came instead were two 3 inch eggrolls stuffed with cream cheese. There wasn’t any imitation crab in it.

Everytime I eat here the food, especially the seafood taste like bleach or cleaning supplies. I called back in. The owner have me my money back but didn’t make a fuss meaning to me that they know that they are trying to stretch the freshness of seafood with cleaning products damping down the odor. Never will eat there again . Sorry lost a customer that was loyal. Food at beginning was fresh but now store is trying to be cheap.

Meh… The only good thing about this place is the shrimp sauce. They may give you a huge portion, but I’d rather have a normal portion of good food than a giant portion of overcooked rice and stringy chicken.

good place for terriyaki or hibachi dinner. very fast and not sparing on the amount. i always go with the hibachi chicken(sometimes w/shrimp). their white sauce is pretty good so mix that up, youre good to go. shrimp was kinda small, vegetables can sometimes taste very mushy.

Even the rice was terrible… even the rice. If you eat at an Asian place and the rice is bad… you know not to eat there again.

Neo Japan is barely ok as Japanese food. This place is very busy at lunch time. Not much in the way of flavor. Just like many other Hibachi places you can watch the cook work. Food C Staff C Décor D Location B Health Inspection Grade 98.5

I ordered the hibachi shrimp, he ordered the veggie plate. I am sucker for sticky rice and it doesn’t disappoint. Other than that I’d say it was fairly unremarkable. Not great, not bad. Good service. I’d recommend it when you’re relatively indifferent to lunch or dinner but you think you want Asian. Not sure when that is, but they’re perfect for that!

Neo Japan, well yes it was good. I got Hibachi Chicken, my friend got Hibachi Scallops. The chicken and scallops were great, beautifully cooked, the rice was good and sticky, the veggies, well they were good but not enough, alot of onions but would have loved more veggies. The spring rolls and potstickers were also great. Nothing bad to say, pricing ok, a bit high but was ok

Japanese served in the style of a typical in and out Chinese place. Walk in, place your order, wait for your number to be called, and take a seat. You get what you pay for, but I think they do a good job. Recently, a friend and I stopped in for lunch. He ordered the Hibachi Chicken and I ordered the Terriyaki Chicken. Rice and a sweet sauce to boot. Yummm. We both cleaned our plates and thoroughly enjoyed our lunches! Very affordable and quick. Full meal with a soda came to about $ 7. Enjoyable and definitely got what I paid for. I’ll be going back and loving it again.
