Salsa far too hot for consumption… service was fair… atmosphere fair… no desire to visit again.

I’ve used their catering service twice so far for company food days and have nothing but good things to say. Their management was very generous with the pricing and did not charge me any set up/catering fees. The food was delicious and pleased a very picky crowd of about 150. There were multiple servers at the buffet line for the duration of my event, about 4 ½ hours, for no extra charges. I chose items from their I will definatly go to them again for future catering needs.

Went here for breakfast on Sunday morning. Food is slightly below average, but the reason for the low rating is that everyone is really unfriendly. Didn’t see a smile the whole time we were there. Bottom line: we didn’t feel welcome at all. Won’t be going back.

Excuse me for a while, while I cry over what used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants on the eastside. I don’t know what the hell happened. Back in my two jobs, call center days, I used to come here weekly. By myself. The menu is small, typical Mexican dishes so I tried a lot of the menu in those days. I was always served chips and salsa by a waitress who spoke no English. There’d be quite a few other people eating as well. The food was always perfect, the chilequiles was by far my favorite. I loved Villa y Zapata. *Also my friend tried to tell me the name translates to the Shoe House. It does not. It’s a sad, sad day when I understand Spanish grammar more than a semi-fluent speaker.* Lately I’ve been in search of the best Mexican on the westside to no avail and after a particularly depressing Mexican restaurant-search-day, I decided to just go to VZ. I love this place, I thought. You can’t go wrong with the chilequiles, I thought. At least I can have good Mexican today, I thought. I ordered the chilequiles and what came out was nothing like I remembered it. The cheese was for the most part, unmelted(which is most likely caused by the quality of cheese and not adjusting the cook time appropriately). But the red sauce was just like spicy tomato sauce. Absolutely no flavor. I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed. Halfway through the meal I had to start scrapping off the paste like sauce. The blandness was becoming overwhelming. And to add to my disappointment, I was never given chips and salsa. Way to kick me when I’m down. The beans were the only saving grace. They are really thick though so once the cheese was gone, I was done. I think the best takeaway VZ(or any restaurant really) can get from this review is this: For the love of God, STOPMAKINGFOODWITHCANNEDPRODUCTS! For starters, you’re actually wasting more money on those products than their fresh counter parts. And more importantly, it always tastes like crap.

Got there around 7:35PM on a Friday for mariachi night. I had to shout my order over the incredibly high volume of the flat screens that were playing concert clips of Mexican pop stars. I ordered flautas and the bf ordered tacos de carne asada. The tostadas were rubbery and stale and the two salsas they served — one green, one red — were waaaaay too picante to eat, even for my bf, who loves to eat raw jalapenos. So the chips and dip were pretty much inedible. Then my dry flautas came with a lump of equally dry beans and a pile of lettuce on the side. Yuck. One word sums up the service: dismal. They were really busy and the servers were nearly jogging around the restaurant to get to everyone’s table. I saw a server almost get whacked in the face with a plate of sizzling fajitas as another server was running out of the kitchen with it. Our waitress would ask if everything was okay and then run away to another table before letting us answer. The hostess had seated the two of us at a table that seats four, so servers came to bother us twice asking to take the cushions off the chairs we weren’t using so they could seat other customers. They gave me the feeling that we had to hurry up and leave because other people were waiting for a table. Finally, when you pay up front, the cashier is only half paying attention to you because he’s talking to the other staff members through his little walkie-talkie. Why waste your time and money at this place when Carnitas Queretaro is just across the street???

It’s not bad their salsa is good, portions are good but it’s nothing special. The wife likes it and I can tolerate it, I go because she wants to. They have a very limited menu and that’s one of their problems for me.
