I usually don’t mind paying more for the convenience of shopping in town… But what I do mind is the absolute lack of customer service. The older gent, younger gent, and blonde female bag boy are always friendly at the registers… But they hired this new dark haired girl who doesn’t even make eye contact! Let alone spout a greeting, or a «how dyou do?» I’m not expecting much, but I’d like to be treated like a human being when someone in the customer service industry is serving me. I come here A LOT, I’d really appreciate it if they schooled these young women in proper manners, because right now I am almost considering taking my business to Big Boy’s, who has disappointed me with bad meat on several occasions. Really? The service is so bad that I’d go to the spoiled meat store? How embarrassing for these clerks.

There is always a thought in my head as I leave for work and I need a few items for home — ‘Do I deal with the crowds and save $, or deal with the passing glances of the entitled workforce attitudes and pay a bit more?’ Now, there are a few people that work in the store that are respectful & polite; the managers, Rocky in produce, Tom and the crew in the meat dept. But some of the newer crew, like the kid who, when asked the whereabouts of a particular item by an elderly lady, just pointed to an isle & mumbled his best, ‘I think.’ Then he picked up his phone, instead of walking her to the item.(and he wasn’t going on break, or helping anyone else, he was in the check stand w/o anyone in his line) Or some of the crew in the Bakery Deli, that keep their backs to us(customers). That make us feel like they would rather have us walk away. Not all of em, but the young kids know what’s up. We’re not asking to be pampered, but at least teach some of the good old fashioned customer service that one would appreciate in a small town supermarket. People are creatures of habit. I work in a bigger town where there are Winco’s and Costco’s, Foodmaxx’s and Save Marts. Prices are a lot cheaper and it would be a simple as starting a new routine to bypass the small town business. That’s not what I would like to do. But some people talk about it, and many feel the same, sadly.

Was at the store in Escalon tonight. I shop there often regardless of higher prices. I try to keep my purchases local when possible. Tonight was not a great experience. Artichokes were on sale awesome right! Well it was just ok. The sign said 2 for 5.00 as well as 1.00 each. When at the register I asked the cashier about the sign and wanted the 1.00 each price. I was told it was an error on the sign and the price was 2 for 5.00. When did it become my responsibility to pay the higher price on a posted sign. This error was not mine. As a consumer I felt cheated.

Good beer selection, a surprisingly well stocked Dutch goods aisle. The firewood bundles are a standard of mine. The fresh bread is nice. I added an extra star because of the great customer service which is a constant.

Excellent priced local market in Escalon. Great small town feel. Love the fact that the staff is conversational with the customers and each other. The staff is always friendly and both the Manager and Assistant Manager are awesome! To those who are critical of this place… I have one simple comment: Maybe Escalon is the wrong town for you to live in. GETOUT!!! Go live in Modesto or Stockton! I like our small town market just the way it is. The staff is awesome!!!

A little more expensive… but you don’t have much to chose from in this area. I’ve always had pretty good experience here. The cashiers do chit chat in personal talk but it hasn’t created a problem for me personally– perhaps if I were in a hurry though. The only real issue I have had was recently I was planning to get deli meat. I grabbed the first pack on the shelf. The package was FULL of mold… I am not talking a little bit either it was like a full pound of mold… nasty… needless to say I didn’t buy any deli meat that day… and haven’t since… Do I continue to shop there… yes of course I’m sure it was just some freak moldy accident. Lol … no deli meat for me though!!!

I understand we have to pay a little more to shop in Escalon… the trade off should be great customer service. Hometown style customer service is what you get everywhere else in Escalon! The cashiers run away from the checkout! Maybe they don’t understand that without customers paying for groceries they wouldn’t have a job? I’ll keep driving and shop at Save Mart in Riverbank! I think the cashiers need to take a field trip to Ace Hardware down the street… that’s customer service Escalon style!

Customer service is very important to me. The girls at the checkout counter need to stop their personal conversations in the presence of customers! I stop in here several times and this is the case 90% of the time! They make me feel so unimportant. All conversation should stop and a focus put on the customer. We are the reason they have jobs. The rest of the store is great, nice selection, great deli and meat dept. Deli/bakery and meat dept DO put the customer first but they need to share their skills with the front counter! I would like to give 5 stars, I love shopping local, but things need to improve upfront.

They charge more for everything — and I’d pay it because its convenient & I like to support businesses here in town. BUT — I can’t stand the fact you can’t get your shopping cart up to the check out stand for all the trinkets & trash displays they pile up at the end of the conveyer belt. It’s like shopping in some 3rd world country gas station. BIG-Boy market is closer to my house, they unload the shopping cart which is the way it should be and I’m not left elbowing my way around the check out isle. After today — never again!

This place is awesome. GREAT Customer service, everyone always smiles and says Hello. The sandwiches are the best part! The lady working in the deli is incredible and sweet ! I HIGHLY recommend this store!

I shop here when i just don’t feel like going to Walmart. its defly got the hometown feel. Great meat deals on an ongoing basis. however their discounted produce is usually not fit for human consumption, but you can sometimes get some salvageable fresh herbs in the discount bin for 99 cents. Other than the various discounted areas, or things that are on sale I wouldn’t choose them for ALL my shopping needs but for a quick run to the store they’re good.

MAR-Val is kind of a small supermarket chain located in the Modesto area. The grocery part of it looks pretty interesting, nice produce section, good looking meats, niche food items you don’t see every day. But the reason to keep coming back to MAR-Val are the sandwiches. MAR-Val has a deli section that doesn’t look all that impressive on the surface. But if you look closely, they will make sandwiches to order. You get a choice of meat, cheese, bread and trimmings. I ordered a black forest ham and swiss on a french roll yesterday and a roast beef and cheddar on sour dough today. Both sandwiches were to die for, fresh bread, plenty of cheese and meat and custom toppings. Beats the crap out of Subway I’ll tell you that. Sandwiches were so big I could only eat half. Recommend jalapeño kettle chips to go with them. A lunch fit for kings.
