Cone Ball is home to a large and original selection of eclectic art pieces, mid century modern furniture, European antiques, beautiful Italian/French hand blown glass vases, as well as smaller, inexpensive household accessories. I’ve found cute, antique brass ornamental iced tea spoons for less than $ 5, wooden bird cigarette holders, and other talking pieces that brighten up any household. It’s a plus that Cone Ball is centrally located, next to bookstores, boutique shops, and great restaurants. If you’re in the downtown area looking to kill some time(or purchase a colorblocked mid century modern armchair), it’s worth plugging a couple extra quarters(or ten!) into your parking meter. There’s always something here that catches my eye.

Throw all the more interesting, quirky items from any 20 or so yard sales into a retail space and you can duplicate Cone Ball. I totally appreciate their eye for kitsch and quirky items. Prices are probably roughly fair for the local retail market, but quite a high percentage of the items(excluding the art pieces) could be found for much cheaper *if* you happened upon them at a yard sale, flea market, etc. The biggest draw, though, is the original art pieces. Esp. the outsider, and folk art pieces that range from outright strange to very interesting. Big rub is the owner. He has the most irritating combination of arrogance and insecurity. I’d had very pleasant interactions with him in the past(setting aside the rub of his mansplainy nature), but on the last two occasions he was quite unpleasant. And that’s coming from a former NYC resident who has both thick skin and a high tolerance for retail staff who are cold and unfriendly. I’d never felt so unwelcome in a store as I did the last time I was in Cone Ball.

This place has some nice mid-century modern items but needs a serious attitude adjustment. Went in there today and the guy working the front counter was incredibly rude and snooty. Really? You clean furniture for a living and appear to sit all day while doing it. REMINDER or rather REALITYCHECK… this is Eugene. Deflate your ego and be a person first. Smile a little, say hi, ask a person how his or her day is going, don’t look at potential customers as if they are going to steal something, act interested about the fact that they are there to potentially buy something, etc, etc, etc. I didn’t even stay long enough to see if it was overpriced but for some reason, I get the feeling in might be. I do not encourage going here unless you want to be treated as «less-than» and made to feel unwelcome. Negative five on the customer service. I will buy my mid-century modern items elsewhere. On a related note, I notice the place is often empty. After going there today, I can see why. Update, possible FLAMEWAR, and a little comedy: Someone who appears to be affiliated with this establishment contacted me via Unilocal.A John C. aka J. Sylvester(?) and confronted me in a rather unprofessional way about this review. At first I thought it was some random message from a troll-perv. Anyway, the author(John/Sylvester) stated to me in his private message,“Maybe you are just cranky from getting too many waxes” among other ridiculous and laughable comments. This one was the funniest though, so I though I’d share it. Let’s face it, getting waxed isn’t like getting a relaxing massage and anyone who pretends it is, is lying. My reviews about particular waxing establishments still stand. My big question, and this is rhetorical, is why on earth would you write a reviewer a confrontational message? Professionalism is shining through!

It just gets better and better… My brother, a hip(and obviously generous and wonderful) guy from Seattle who hunts out the best vintage/art places up there, now comes to Eugene the day before Christmas and does all his shopping at Cone Ball. As he tells it, the prices are better than anything he can find in Seattle, and the objects are first rate. Lucky, lucky me; I can count on a fab present from Cone Ball every year! And lucky Eugene! Cone Ball continues to be a wonderful place that never disappoints.

This is not your traditional Eugene antique shop. The guys who own the shop are very welcoming and they pick fantastic items! There is everything from old school chairs priced at around $ 25 to modern lamps as high as $ 1400. Everything in the store is in excellent condition, which is a HUGE plus in a city that usually features stores that put items that are in flea market condition in «antique» shops. I will definitely be back to browse and to buy. There really is something for everyone.

If you are the unusual antiques/art aficionado type this place should not be missed. Amazingly well curated selection of items displayed impeccably. Oddly this shop feels like it should be in downtown LA or some trendy spot in NY, alas it sits in downtown Eugene.
