very good egg rolls and both the orange chicken and garlic fried chicken were great, lunch special even on weekends makes it very affordable for a lot of food.

Others who’ve posted have had less than great meals at Fortune Inn, which surprises me. The four-five times I’ve been in the food has been quite good – best Chinese food in Eugene – and the service has been excellent. Really good sauces and a nice combination of vegetables. I’m glad my friend took me in, and I’ll definitely return. Almond cookies, oh yeah!

I don’t know why, but it’s been a pain in the butt to find crispy pan fried noodles. Ask for chow mein and chances are you get a different product in every restaurant. Sometimes it’s more like yakisoba, other times it’s this thick noodle that looks like french fried onions. Without photos on the menu, it’s been a frustrating experience looking for what I consider«real» chow mein. :p I skipped this place in the past due to the mediocre reviews and the fact that the parking lot is almost always empty, but now I’m glad I went tonight. Their super chow mein noodles were exactly what I was looking for. For $ 12 I got a giant plate — enough to share with another person(though they have a $ 6 per person minimum) with heaps of vegetables and a healthy serving of seafood(scallops, shrimp and squid). In comparison, their vegetable chow mein is $ 9 and their house special is $ 11. I haven’t tried the rest of the menu, but at a glance, this place is more traditional fare and less of the american style chinese food that I’ve lately resigned myself to. Looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu!

I am writing this review based on my 2 take out experiences. I have eaten in the restaurant and when I do it is always very good. However, the last take out trials were completely awful! Do not get your food to go from these people. Both times mistakes with the order were made, things were missing from the order and the quality of the food was terrible. Grossly overcooked noodles, fried shrimp that were not freshly cooked and seemed to be day-old and microwaved, disgusting soup, cold stale fried rice, and no sweet and sour sauce! I will never, ever order take out and I rather doubt I will return on account of our last disgusting experience.

Best pan fried noodles in town, no question. Just mind the Chinese holidays or you’ll be surprised by an unexpected closed sign.

Service: Friendly and Polite Food: one out of the six dishes we ordered was fantastic, but the five that weren’t were TERRIBLE– as in the worst thing I’ve ever eaten; even though it is clear that they use fresh ingredients. Wait times: 45 minutes is too long to wait for any meal. Kitchen: Not only did they cook the wrong appetizer(then not offer to let us have it anyway) it came to us 20 minutes after the server told us they made the wrong dish and it’d only be an extra 5 minutes. Appearance: definately out-dated, which you come to expect from a small business restaurant that’s been in the same locale for decades, but clean on the surface. What I really think of this place: I think that it could really use Robert Irvine’s Mission Impossible to update the place and show them how to cook and season food properly and in a timely manner. Unfortunately– if I were to watch said show, I have the feeling I might just throw up knowing I’d eaten there.

Fortune Inn was the best Chinese restaurant in town in the 1990s, bar none. Excellent sauces, very fresh, high-quality ingredients that made for some delicious meals. My favorites were the Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce and the Chicken Chow Fun. But sometime in the past decade they started slipping. The quality became just okay, and the brightness and freshness of the past plates gave way to items that are often quite mediocre. I am torn between a 2* and 3* rating. I am giving it a 2* due to how creepy that neighborhood can be after dark. FYI, I last had food from Fortune Inn in March 2012.

Fortune Inn is a nice change from the typical Chinese restaurant. Not everything is deep friend or buried in sauce. The location is a tad sketchy(therefore the four stars) but it is clean and the wait staff is excellent. My favorite is the pan fried chicken with garlic sauce. They also have great pot stickers. Soup is included with lunch and the portions are more than generous. I always have left overs. They aren’t in my immediate area so I don’t go as often as I should. Yummy!

I’ll take 1 star off for location alone, but the food can’t be beat. You have to try the spicy pork with green beans… it is to die for!

I’ve been trying to find a decent Chinese restaurant, being originally from Vancouver, B. C there are so many restaurants to choose from. Throw a rock and you’d find one. Here in Eugene, it’s more of a mission than anything. I tried to stay away from them, but the craving’s would come. So far I’ve tried their beef fried rice, lemon chicken and their pineapple chicken. The latter was amazing, we asked for it a little spicier and it was great. I also ordered their egg drop soup and I hated it, it had cabbage in it. Not that I hate cabbage, it was more that I was expecting just regular egg drop soup. I obviously can’t compare this restaurant to the ones back home or to the ones in San Fran. When I am home, and craving Chinese, this is where I am going to go. I’ve never been for the lunch specials, but I’ve seen the take out menu and their prices for lunch seem pretty cheap if you want to try different things. The dinner portions are huge. There’s only 2 of us, but 2 options could easily feed another or 2 other people. I’ve always done take out, and it never takes more than 10 minutes. It’s not much too look at, but the whoever is taking our order is always pretty nice.

Absolutely horrible! I’ve had a lot of lunch specials at various Chinese restaurants around the country, but Fortune Inn has managed to rank as the worst I’ve ever visited! Lunch specials are cheap for a reason, and it’s usually because you get more rice/noodles instead of meat, which is fine, if the price is cheap. Fortune Inn gives good portion sizes, but the food is damn near inedible! My «fried» rice(I don’t think you can call it that) tasted about a week old. The egg rolls were burnt and lacked any meat(they were supposed to be shrimp). And the«spicy» chicken dish was bland and 80% onions and peppers. Listen, I’ve had authentic Chinese cuisine, and I’ve had cheapo takeout Chinese. I appreciate them both. So, I’m not a snob or addicted to MSG. Fortune Inn is just horrible.

Don’t let the outside of this building keep you away. We enjoyed great food and service. They have the best orange chicken I have ever had. The king pao chicken was good also but not very hot. All ingredients were very fresh. I will be back!

I tried this place based on the Unilocal reviews. I got take out and the service was super friendly and quick. I the décor and cleanliness was really nice. The portion sizes were huge. One plate would have been more than enough for myself and my 12 year old boy and we all know 12 year old boys eat ALOT!!! The food seemed fresh enough and cooked well, it just didn’t have much flavor. We had a beef dish and a chicken dish and there wasn’t much difference in the taste besides the meat of course. The chicken was suppose to be hot and spicy and there was absolutely no heat. I like this place enough to try it again. I think I’ll eat in next time.

I’ve been eating at fortune inn for several years now. It’s one of the most hit and miss places I’ve ever eaten. When it’s good it’s GREAT, but when it’s bad it’s awful. We’ve gotten food within 5 minutes of walking in the door, and we’ve also waited over an hour for a plate of chow mein. The flavor of the dishes has changed a few times as well, either new chefs or new owners or both maybe. Overall, give it a try. If it’s not great, come back in a few days and it probably will be.

Hunan Beef is the best! I have never been disappointed with the food or the service. One of my favorite places to go for pot stickers too! The building was probably some chain restaurant at one time, but they have beautiful, healthy plants and it is clean. Great for take out.

A great restaurant for solid American-Chinese food. The service is very nice and the servings quite large; the family-style menu is an excellent way to have a lot of variety in your dinner so group endeavours are recommended. The prices are modest; when you factor in what you take home and consider that you are getting 1.5 meals for the price of one it really is a bargain. Will we be back? Very likely!

It’s yummy and the prices are pretty nice. The egg flour soup is the best I’ve had around so far and so the tea. We try to go when it still has the lunch prices up.

The service is good, the variety is even better, the prices are okay, the location is terrible. Not enough people give this place the credit it deserves, given the fact its one of the more authentic places in the city. Another strike is the fact they’re located so far into 6th street, they’re practically near the highway. Their prices don’t reflect the portion ratio to price, but the food is very decent for Eugene standards. The restaurant from the outside looks bigger than it really is. But its a solid interior that happens to use cheap silverware. I prefer takeout for that very reason.
