Changed again? Not sure what happened but the vibe has gotten a little too funky, like constant drum circle hazy funky. Coffee is still good.

A good friend of mine thinks One Cup is the best coffee shop in Eugene. She’s kind of a nutcase, though, so here’s my take: On the positive side, the espresso drinks are good, and there are a bunch of cool specialty drinks to try. Prices are reasonable. Best of all, One Cup is open twenty-four hours a day. Still, it’s not the cleanest coffee shop in town, and the cool Eugene-y vibe can go too far: last time I was there, the whole place reeked of pot and patchouli. Also, since it’s often just one employee behind the counter, it can take FOREVER for a drink to get made.

I really enjoy this coffee shop. The owner is great, he’s very friendly and even pulled up a chair and talked with me about his coffee experience. His partner and his adorable child are also heavily involved in the business, which gives the place a good family feel. Service can be a little slow because it’s usually a one man show, but the product is well worth the wait. Coffee is delicious, I especially like their specialty drinks. Crepes are wonderful, especially the chocolate/orange crêpe. As for the atmosphere mentioned below… that’s what this place is about. It’s like walking into someone’s house and meeting their personal tastes. IMO, that’s half the fun. Record player is available to customers so you can choose your own record. They also have typewriters available if you feel like going back in time. Oh, and wifi is for everyone… all at once. Prices are reasonable and it’s open 24 hours.

*This review is mostly based on qualities conducive for studying.* The most austere coffee shop ever. So I have a bit to say about this place… It was a particularly odd experience going there. I think it had to do with mix of the barista, other patrons there at the time and the type of music that was playing. First off, when I walked up to the counter, the male barista just, very very awkwardly stood there and said nothing to me. I was the one to say hello to him. I then asked if they had wifi in the shop, to which he answered«I don’t know. Wait, yeah. But, I don’t know if you all can be on it at the same time.» There were 3 other people in the place. I never tried to get on it though, because the 2 outlets available were in use. The tea I had was quite good though — it had roses in it. The atmosphere was the main thing I didn’t enjoy about this place. Now, I don’t get weird-ed out too often, but I did! The building itself has a lot of potential — hardwood floors, big windows, and as you walk in, the kitchen is in the center and visible behind the counter. However, the seating area is sparse. There are tables and chairs, all with very skinny legs along the walls. In the middle is this large floor space with 2 skinny-legged tables and chairs floating around in it. Could easily be remedied by using a rug to define the space or getting more substantial furniture. If you are into strict minimalism — you won’t be bothered by such things. Now style is style and everyone has their preference. However, what I think is another point in favor of my critique is that the shop itself looks out at a warehouse. A big cement gray wall to be exact. And, it’s next to a big empty gravel lot people seem to park in. So, the combination of the place itself and the view I think, really call for an ambiance that contrasts with the outside or at least tries to diminish it. The shop just didn’t have warmth to it. The other patrons, man, let me tell you… There were 3 guys in there. All probably about 30 – 45. The one near me was playing minesweeper on a super old laptop. It was 2pm on a Friday. A record player spouted out some old, lonley bluegrassy tunes. It was like the perfect creepy soundtrack to my whole experience there. The barista, the furniture, everything seemed to have hard edges to it. My observations and imaginative thoughts managed to overcome me after about a ½ hr.(plus 2 of those guys started talking way loudly about ISP’s for a long time) and I left. As I bussed my dishes, the weird barista was making oatmeal cookies(I had to ask him). That made me feel a little better. I bet their food is good. If this coffee house was a person… I think it’d be a wrinkled up old man. I probably won’t be back, unless I am in a solemn mood, which doesn’t occur very often.
