Courthouse Cafe

I work in the building and would eat lunch here several days a week if it were edible. Greasy fried egg in a breakfast burrito? They screw up basics that seem impossible to ruin. Rotten «baked» potato from the microwave, wrapped in melting plastic? Seriously rotten spots throughout potato. There’s no way they didn’t notice while preparing it. I once got a sandwich on a croissant that was supposed to be cold, but it had been left by the stove and all the cold toppings were wilted and warm.

They were out of hash browns this late in the day so they substituted tater tots instead. I think I will order them that way from now on if they’ll let me, that was amazing!!!

My previous review was actually meant to be for Downtown Express. I don’t believe I’ve eaten at the Courthouse Café. Oops.

Good food, excellent customer service. Lost a star because while they do now take plastic, they charge a 50 cent fee, claiming they could not afford to otherwise. I run a business also, if it is that expensive for you to take the card, it really is okay to raise your prices, just a cent or two, to defray it. I KNOW what those costs are, they aren’t all that high. But on the plus side, the food was good, the selection very good and the service excellent. If it were not such a pain to get into the Courthouse, with their TSA like security checks, I might go more often.

This lovely little café serves the community located on the 3^rd floor of the Humboldt County Courthouse. They serve breakfast and lunch. Healthy or fried short order. Their coffee is great, and they even make espresso drinks. They hand bake cookies, which one of the Judges regularly hands out to the attorneys on Thursday appearing in her Courtroom. They don’t take debit cards, but you can run an account tab, and record your purchases in a book. They make it for you there, or you can call in advance and get takeout. My favorites are the Breakfast Burrito, Oatmeal and Chicken Quesadilla. They also make specials of the day such as chili or lasagna. Friendly workers, and it is not uncommon for a defendant, an attorney, a sheriff’s deputy and a Judge to be in line ordering their food. We are really lucky to have this resource, and especially on those rainy days, where if you want to eat, but not go outside, you can do that. I highly recommend this fine establishment.
