excellent service, nice atmosphere once inside. the exterior looks very iffy. sadly, the food is decidedly mediocre. even the«french dessert» — we tried the chocolate trio, and it tasted like the cakes just came out of the freezer. the rolls had way too much rice and not much flavor. the best was probably the childrens plate — which was very nice with soup, salad, tempura, and chicken teriyaki. my standards may be too high for fairfield, but we will not be back

My friend, her son and I tried this place out… she’s not much of a Japanese cuisine person, but decided to give it a shot. By her reaction, I know she enjoyed her food. Her son was iffy about the selection since he’s used to burgers/pizza…but he chowed down on the salad like crazy! I had the Hawaiian Spider Roll(pretty good) and another roll which the name escapes me.(CA roll topped with baked salmon). I enjoyed both. My friend had the Chicken Teriyaki, and her son had the Children’s Plate which consisted of Chicken Teriyaki, Tempura & miso soup. Dessert…now that was on a different level. Like other reviews, the Vanilla Crème Brulee was heavenly! Beautiful presentation and tasted wonderful. We also tried the Trio of Chocolate which was really good but in my opinion overpriced. I’m definately coming back and taking my family here.

During the weekend of April 17, 2010, my family and I decided to try Wasabi 201. With me were my wife, father in law and 1 year old daughter. FOOD: Okay but nothing spectacular. Portions were«normal» but I am used to seeing bigger portions at Japanese restaurants. SERVICE: Terrible. After being seated for about 10 – 12 minutes, I had to get up and ask the manager if someone could take our order. The staff smiled sheepishly, looking somewhat embarrassed that they«forgot» about us, and took our order right away. While carrying my daughter, I asked if there was a high chair available. An elderly staff person pointed to a high chair in the middle of the room. No one offered to help us so I dragged a rather«dirty» high chair back to our table. During several points in our meal, I had to get up to ask someone from staff for napkins, other items that were necessary, etc. Our waitress was an elderly Asian woman. Since my wife has allergies to certain foods(i.e. crab), she asked the woman what was in the chef’s special of the day regarding sushi. The woman responded rudely that we could not«choose» what was in the meal. We understood there was probably a bit of a language barrier, but this lady was rude and abrupt nonetheless as she thought we were trying to substitute items. Again, my wife asked what was in the chef’s special. However, the woman refused to tell her. Trying to be understanding, she asked the waitress if that waitress could ask the chef or whether she(my wife) could ask the chef because she had allergies to certain foods. The woman grew more defensive and indignant, insisting we couldn’t «change» items in the chef’s special and asked what my wife«wanted» in the sushi. … I had to speak up and tell the waitress, in a calm but firm manner: «Maam, my wife has an allergy. If she eats certain foods, her throat will ‘close’. Now can you please find out what is in the chef’s special?» The waitress seemed to change her demeanor somewhat, went away and returned to tell us what the chef’s special contained. CLEANLINESS: The bathroom was VERY small and cramped. The bathroom was not clean and it reminded me of one you would find at a gas station. The floor in the restaurant and the tables looked like they were part of a franchised food chain at some point. OVERALLEXPERIENCE: My family were very disappointed with the food, service, ambiance, etc. We will never return to this restaurant because of the rude, terrible service; uncleanliness, and mediocre food. Although we do not doubt others might like the place(the place was at least 50% full when we ate), we find that other Japanese restaurants in the area are a much better value and experience(i.e. Matsuri’s in Vallejo).

I’ve been going to Wasabi 201 for the past 3 – 4 years now. A great sushi spot, if you prefer a nicer sit-down sushi joint(compared to Yo Sushi). The owners are really friendly and great you with a warm smile and hello. I usually order the same — Tekka Roll, Alaska Roll, and the Rainbow Roll. The fish is always fresh. If you order one of their entrée’s they serve you salad and miso soup. Their house salad dressing is quite good, and the miso soup is always piping hot. The best thing about this restaurant aside from the fresh fish is the desert. Yes, I said desert. The owner is a french pastry chef and he makes the best crème brûlée. Creamy, with fresh vanilla beans, topped with crispy candied sugar, fresh sliced strawberries and kiwi. The perfect ending to any meal.

Last week the family & I once again went in for dinner. The owner’s wife was just turing the OPEN sign on & in no time 4 other couples came in. We were happy to get our order in first. As usual the Chirashi was great & the fish still fresh. My wife had beef yakisoba & she commented that it was probably the best one from their kitchen she’s had. My son was able to hork himself on Tekka, his favorite, while my daughter enjoyed her miso soup. Back before Christmas the owner’s wife said business was very slow. There’s 2 other sushi places really close. One of them is owned by a drunk, the other is really crowded & high volume. Go back & give Wasabi 201 a try, it s great dinner date place, where above all the food is still very good.

A nice sushi restaurant and a great place to have dessert. The price is reasonable and some of the rolls are actually cheaper then they would be in most places. I kept hearing about how great the desert were but I decided to pass even though I was really craving the crème brûlée. Well I apparently didn’t need to order it because after I asked for the check they gave a sample of the crème brûlée with out me asking, it’s like they were mind readers or just knew after giving me a sample I would be hooked because now no matter how full I am I have to get the crème brûlée.

i came here for the first time with a few friends. we were the onlypeople in the restaurant and only one guy came in for a to go order. i ordered a sushi roll which was ok. my friend ordered the kalbi(short ribs) whichi have had better, to me it had no marinade at all and my other friend got a skimpy bento box(skimpy compared to ichi maki in fairfield). the food was just ok but the dessert was really good. i ordered the crème brûlée and boy was it pretty. it was topped with powdered sugar and a sugar candy piece was placed on top. i would prob only go back for the dessert.

This place was pretty good considering the location. The woman who took care of the tables(perhaps a co-owner?) was kind of miserable, but nice enough to slap a glass of water on the table for me while I was waiting for a to-go order. I ordered a chirashi(my fave) and was quite impressed by the size and the amount of sashimi that was included. I also ordered a super caterpiller roll, which was also very good. I suppose that if I’m travelling here again and needed a sushi fix, I would return. In fact, if that happens, I’ll have to try the desserts that everyone is raving about…

I can’t believe I finally found a sushi place that is CHEAP and GOOD in the Fields! The Cal rolls are $ 2.75 for 6pc and the children’s bento box is only $ 5.00 and it comes w/tempera, soup, chicken, and salad! So my daughter I share!!! YUMMMMMMMY!!!

My hubby and I were looking for Japanese restaurants in Fairfield that specialized in sushi and found a review of this place. The chef was actually the pastry chef for the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco so they offered french desserts which are not normally a staple in Japanese restaurants. Seeing how I am a HUGE dessert freak I decided to give them a try and went ahead and ordered the cream brulee and decided to try their Cali roll while the hubby has chicken teriyaki. Now the portions were decent, the teriyaki was big but not really grilled the way we like it and drenched in a little too much sauce, but still tasted OK. As for my rolls, well those just simply couldn’t compare to the ones I get in San Francisco, mainly because they don’t offer any real crab and don’t put Mayo in their rolls either so their a little dry. But as for my crème brûlée, aside from the one I’ve gotten at Gary Danko, I think theirs was very good and the presentation was a delightful surprise. I mean this chef was after all the head pastry chef for The Ritz, but the caramelized sugar design(see picture of crème brûlée) he had made as a center piece was one that you can only be used to seeing on the Food Network and the berries in the center were a great compliment and added some texture and extra flavor to it, though I don’t mind mine plane either. Since this was only our first time here and we only tried two things plus the dessert I’m going to have to give this place 3 stars for now, mainly for the dessert as we didn’t enjoy the dishes we got a whole lot. But if you’re in the mood for some classy french desserts and happen to live here or be in the area, then I highly recommend theirs. Hopefully the next time we decide to eat here we’ll be able to try more of the rolls and their other specialties for a more accurate review.

Where to begin with what may have been the most disappointing sushi meal I have ever had. If only zero stars were an option… Nearly every point in the reviews preceding mine I find not to be true. Firstly, everything was old: the rice was medium-grain(instead of short), dry, stale and far too abundant. None of the fish was particularly fresh, nor was there much of it. Some of it was downright spoiled. Service was nearly nonexistent. The place was sparsely populated(only one other couple, just getting up to leave as we entered) We were accosted with a loud«Irasshaimase!!» from both the chef and the waitress, led to our table, brought our drinks and then promptly ignored. The waitress herself spoke very broken english and it took sometime to communicate what it was we wanted, even after pointing to items on the menu. It took quite a long time to receive our order given how empty the place was, and when we did receive it, half of it was not even what we ordered. What we did receive properly was nearly inedible, and some both smelled and tasted off. When we attempted to explain this to the waitress, she didn’t understand a word of it, and instead walked off to sit at the vacant sushi bar and chat with the chef. She eventually brought us the check, and as we didn’t have the wherewithall to argue the point any more, we just paid and left, our plates mostly full. And so I cannot speak to the quality of the bento boxes or the french desserts, and I will agree that the décor was quite nice. But both the service and food were downright abysmal. Food like that at any price is too expensive.

well I’m a little biased here because i used to work there and from time to time if they’re in a bind. All I can say is, good food and great people. They don’t serve rolls that are mostly rice and lack fish, here the fish is cut thick and the rice is just enough. Aside from the sushi they have good curry and very affordable bento boxes. Don’t forget about the dessert here either. Prepared by the owner who also happens to have been the head pastry chef at the Ritz Carlton S.F. in the past, he combines beauty and richness that puts a great finish on a great dinner.

Wasabi 201 is one of my preferred sushi places around town. Their sushi is good and the prices are decent. Not very many places have a garlic tuna roll and it’s yummy here. Lunch Bento boxes are priced really well and the sushi presentations are very impressive. Do not forget to try their fabulous desserts! I love the crème brûlée and the grand marnier soufflé. It is worth it to order the soufflé ahead of time!

I cant believe Wasabi 201 wasnt on here!!! How sad!!! So here’s my review: Love the place, not bad prices either. Love their sushi, appetizers and bento boxes are good too. My boyfriend and I cant eat there for less than $ 30 for lunch, and have left overs! When there with 4 people, we ate for under $ 50 bucks for dinner. Nice presentation, they once covered have the plate in a bunch of sauces in a pretty intricit design, and it taste good too! LOL. Also they sometimes give you free french desert! I forgot to mention the sushi chef and owner, is a talented and well trained french pastry chef, so save room for desert! Desert isnt cheap though =( Since there are no other rating for this place here’s someone elses on another site: When the sign out front says Japanese food and French desserts, how can one not be intrigued? Wasabi 201 is seemingly another home-style Japanese restaurant, yet its extensive menu proves surprising. More than 40 special sushi rolls of maki and temaki can adequately make up an entire meal or act as great appetizers. There are the standards in udon, curry and yakimono. Heavenly bowls of sukiyaki may be included as part of combination bento boxes. The surprise comes with the fact that chef Yong S. Kim trained in a French kitchen and has included perfectly prepared souffls, crme brle and a fully plated chocolate trio on the dessert menu. The setting is slightly sterile with black booths and chairs and white walls, but the service is attentive and the food makes up for the lack of ambience.
