Started having a great time and then ordered a clam plate for $ 18.00. Price was not bad since I saw someone having one at the bar… nice size. When the plate came, I counted 7-clams. Very disappointed. I saw a customer having a clam roll for $ 13.00 with a count of 10 clams. Makes no sense. Spoke to the bartender and our waiter and both said it was their first day and that was it. I would have thought the manager might have paid me a visit. Ruined my farther’s day!!!

Excellent summer time spot to drop in after the beach if you want to enjoy a few drinks outside. I’ve known about this place for a while and finally yesterday decided to stop in for a drink after i couldn’t handle the horse flies at west island beach. What was meant to be «one» drink turned into 3 drinks, a shared appetizer and enjoying some live music while chatting up with a few fellow locals. Drinks: Punched In the Hatch: Basically a Rum and juice drink Mint Lemonade: Tasted like a mojito with lemon Dark and Stormy: A summer classic Appetizer: Linguica cakes: same idea as clam cakes but no clams, just linguica, onion and peppers chopped up and mixed in the batter. Drinks were refreshing and the linguica cakes hit the spot.

Down the Hatch is basically an outside parking lot tiki bar at Earl’s Marina on the causeway from Sconticut Neck to West Island. In the height of summer you sort of feel like you might be at some handpainted bar hut in the caribbean islands. Its silly and kind of divey but fun all the same. The live music is terrific and people are super friendly and colorful as there are all kinds of customers — bikers, boaters, families, neighbors. This ain’t a classy yacht club & thats one of the reasons I really love it. Think Rodney Dangerfield NOT Ted Knight ala Caddyshack. The quesadillas, burgers(w Hatch sauce) type pub food is hot & yummy. The view driving over the causeway is as nice as anything you would see on ACK or the Vineyard. My only hope is that more people will frequent the place in late spring, early fall and during the day because its more fun when there is a lot of «action». The business is a great asset to the area & such a great stop for buzzards bay boaters looking for a spot to gas up & have a drink & a bite. Check it out.

This was my first and hopefully last visit to Down the Hatch. First we waited nearly 15 minutes to order 2 bottles of beer from a bartender that was more focused on socializing with staff and friends than serving customers even though it is only cans/bottles and premixed drink specials. We decided to try the clambakes and buffalo fries which were good. After we finished our appetizers the band was starting up again so we decided to try to get another round. After waiting too long for the bartender and with the mediocre band playing we just left and went to downtown New Bedford. July22 Food: Average Bar Service: Horrible Band: Mediocre
