Java Hutt never fails. It’s a great place to get work done, use the internet, and grab a bite to eat. It opens early and closes late. Food options are better than other competing coffee shops. Can’t speak on the coffee since I don’t drink much coffee period. For my needs not many coffee shops in the area can compete.

This place feels dirty so I left after trying to stay for half an hour. The patrons were quite the variety. The tea was good. The food was okay, but the uncleanliness of the tabletops and chairs creeped me out so I couldn’t help but wonder how the food was put together. Did they wash the spinach? Was the tomato precut and sitting somewhere for a long time? No clue. This place could really improve if the tables and seats were clean.

If you hadn’t noticed, recently Java Hutt came under new leadership. The place is WAY cleaner, and generally has a more friendly and warm appeal than it has had in the past. If you wrote if off a while ago, it’s probably time to pop in and give this place another chance. Subtle changes have gone a long way for this place. Owners are around working, and making your coffee almost every morning. Nothing says, «We are invested in our small business» more than being present.

Nice, friendly staff, decent coffee and food. Free wifi. Regulars are characters. Good place to study for board exams.

It’s a reliable place for sure. Nothings really extraordinary about it, but the prices are good, there are no other coffee shops in the area oddly enough, and it’s got your standard coffeehouse fare. It’s not going to knock your socks off but for a quick cup of Joe on the run, it does the trick.

Java Hutt is one of my favorite hangouts, and I’ve built up some wonderful memories over the years. The seating is as good as it can be in the small space, and the staff doesn’t seem to mind if you move tables and chairs around – if you want to stretch out, the couches are incredibly comfy. There are plenty of outlets for your laptop, but the WiFi is kind of spotty in my experience. The drinks are tasty, if not exemplary. The coffee is good, the blended drinks are definitely better than Starbucks, and the loose-leaf tea is of solid quality. There’s a good assortment of pastries and snacks. The menu has been upgraded in the last couple of years – it’s nothing amazing, but decidedly suitable coffeeshop food. The sandwiches are fresh-made. I wouldn’t go here specifically for lunch, but if I’m hanging out here I know I have some decent options for food. If you’re looking for somewhere to hang out for a few hours and not spend a ton of money, this is the perfect place.

Came here while my car was getting serviced. Like others have mentioned its okay. They did offer boba which did peak my interest but it was way too cold for that. I ordered a mocha. It was pretty good and the service was decent. I parked myself on one of their four black leather couches. It was comfy considering I don’t own a couch. The couches does look a bit old. Does need a touch up. Overall, it was pretty quiet and it was a quick hour that I passed here.

I guess I can’t complain! Java Hutt has coffee and they have it fast! I’m not a really big fan of their soy chai tea(it was a taste that I wasn’t expecting) but overall it was very pleasant overall. They have not only soy milk, but almond milk too which is really nice. They also have vegan cookies. The people are always really nice who work there too. They have good seating and a super friendly atmosphere.

My go to coffee house. Usually stop in on my way to work in the morning, and it’s quick. Staff is friendly and drinks are priced well. I often do homework here. They are tables to work and couched for relaxing when studying flashcards. The people is an added value while your latte.

Update… Had my first bite to eat here… Breffy sandwich with egg cheese and turkey bacon on a grilled croissant… Yummy yummy in my tummy! Accompanied with a large cut of double chocolate brownie!!! Still 5 stars Java Hutt!

Ahh Java Hutt, the memories this place has for me are many storied over the years. I’ve launched businesses here, taken countless meetings as the place where East meets West and someone just HAD to meet-up. Needless to say i’ve made a living at little places like this, and this place in particular. The coffee is really good and the Chai is great. I have yet to enjoy a Bubble Tea, but I hear they are oddly satisfying. As a side note, that was the Wi-Fi password: bubbletea. The layout of the Java Hutt is cozy, with overstuffed couches and table/chair combos on the outskirts. Always a friendly face behind the counter and i’ve had many conversations with other patrons and everybody is really laid back and cool. You want coffee? I give you Java Hutt.

i got a french orange cream soda and it was very good. My boyfriend is obsessed with this place, he will drive all the way from his house to there for some type of chai tea thing.

Java Hutt is an OK coffee shop. It reminds me of many of the middle of the road coffee shops around the country. It’s not trying to be hipster and it’s not trying to be fancy… it’s just a decent place to work and drink coffee. The staff were great people and the coffee was on point. The seating was worn leather couches for the most part that were comfortable, but that you felt like you could catch something from(which isn’t atypical of coffee shops). This place is a solid 3 stars. I would go there if you want a kick from coffee and don’t want to be ignored and have to listen to the loooooong conversations of the baristas a bit down the street at the Red Hook.

Here I go again, reviewing a coffee place, and I don’t drink coffee. But I’m digging you, Java Hutt. The atmosphere is comfortable, lots of table seating and big comfy leather couches. Parking is metered which is to be expected in downtown Ferndale. The baristas are nice, while not always consistent on the beverages. The Chai Latte is pretty solid. I like the hot chocolate too. I’ve tried a few of the baked goods and they’ve been decent. My wife digs the coffee(although she has told me that their coffee doesn’t reheat well). They have lots of loose leaf teas to choose from. I haven’t tried any of their sandwiches yet, but they look tasty. Nice people, good teas. What else could a non-coffee drinker need?

Java Hutt has evolved from a 3-star café to a gross little place with terrible coffee and mediocre food. I used to hang out there quite often, but since discovering The Red Hook across the street, I’ve vowed to never return. On one of my last visits, I got a large coffee to go and wound up dumping it out in a parking lot because I just couldn’t drink it — way, way too strong, and the beans aren’t that good anyway. The last time, there was a different barista behind the counter, so I was hoping for something I could actually choke down. Alas, I got about four tiny sips in before giving up and asked for an americano, which wasn’t any better. Also: their bathrooms are totally disgusting, which is never a good sign for what might be going on in the kitchen, and there are almost always tiny flies near the uncovered bagels on the counter. I could go on and on about this place, but instead, I’ll just recommend walking across the street for a much better cup of coffee at The Red Hook. Sorry, Java Hutt, but after years and years of patronizing you, I’ve got to call it quits.

This coffee shop is exactly what I am looking for in a locally owned place… not a fan of big chain places. Love the coffee, service and atmosphere. Choices of organic and free trade coffee and gluten free or vegan baked goods are so good!

I’m sad. I had high hopes for Java Hutt. I used to love it back in it’s Birmingham days, and I was looking forward to trying it out for the first time in Ferndale this weekend with my bestie. I will say that I am torn with the rating. if I could give 2.5 stars, I would… for the coffee alone. This location, unlike the old Birmingham location, is ultra modern feeling, with very little comfort appeal. There are 2 comfy, yet out of place looking, couches. One had a rather large man sleeping on it, so we avoided that area. The two people that we were working were exceptionally unfriendly, and seemed as though they had no idea how to properly manage the place, because one of them took our orders, then they both were preparing one of the drinks at the same time. On the other hand, my café au lait was great, and my friend’s SF raspberry latte was great. We had some sort of quinoa energy bar that was pretty good too. The food didn’t look like what it was before, but they’re not a restaurant, so you take what you can get, I guess. Will I be back? I’m not rushing back, but if for some reason I’m in Ferndale and find myself having a craving for java, I won’t rule out Java Hutt.

I had a Chai Latte. My friend had a canned drink. So with this said, I may not be the best judge of Java Hutt. Particularly more so since I did not know what it was called when I walked in, and accidentally checked into the Boston Tea Room instead. However, if given a choice, I would rather go elsewhere. It’s not the most inviting atmosphere, it’s okay but that’s it, there’s nothing very friendly or unique about it. Some things I noticed, — They have a small awkward sign that says no outside food allowed. — They have 4 love seat couches, 2 facing each other next to each other taking up an inordinate amount of space — but quite worth it imho. — Bathroom keys are at the far end of the counter — thank goodness they are not oversizedly obnoxious. — Lots of small two person tables down a long hallway to the bathroom — not the most appetizing. Make your own call, but you’re not missing much by not going there. *I cannot speak to the quality or taste of their baked goods.

C’mon Java Hutt. Get it together. You’ve got no competition, in terms of a «real» coffee shop, in downtown Ferndale, but you just keep screwing up. Each time I’ve been in here to order a chai latte, its tasted different. Ranging anywhere between good(not great), and downright awful. The mixture is all over the map. The last time I had one, I had to take it back up to the counter so that they could add chai into it(so it tasted like something other than steamed milk), and the girl actually ROLLEDHEREYES. I am *not* a difficult customer. I realize people have bad days, are busy, etc., but the least you can do is make my drink taste better when you’ve screwed up. The atmosphere is good enough — standard coffee shop set up, and the patrons are a nice mix of hipster, professionals, and(gay) moms. I really WANT to like Java Hutt, and I’ll keep going back occasionally to help support local business, but I just want them to pull it together. Insure some consistency, hire staff that isn’t aloof and/or snarly, and make me believe you can get my chai right, for goddess’ sakes!

Ferndale benefits from four distinct coffeeshop models — the slick(Torino), the chain(Tim Horton’s), the bohemian(AJ’s), and the modern(Java Hutt). Java Hutt delivers without any surprises. It represents pretty well everything you might come to expect from an independent coffee place: a selection of specialty drinks, a few baked goods, free wifi, lots of tables and a few comfy couches for long-term loungers. Menu boards list out the day’s offerings and the prices are strictly average. Employees dole up cups of joe and tea in large mugs or takeaway cups. Posters on the front window advertise local events and plug Ferndale activities, a definite plus to get to know what’s around time. The view onto 9 Mile can be an inspiration for a writer or a distraction from a book for a reader. Java Hutt has two very different faces, as noted in previous reviews. The quiet Hutt is a nice place to curl up for a few hours and get some work or web surfing done. Facing a wait time to visit the doctor or between work and play? Stop in and those moments fade into a pleasant hum of life at a nice pace. The smaller tables give space without leading to the dreaded table-sprawl which has turned the Caribou at 13 Mile and Woodward into such a nightmare for me; two tables shoved together equals less space when one or two people occupy them. Java Hutt’s setup is nicer. On the other hand, show up in a weeknight or a mid-Saturday, and the evil Jekyll Hutt is out in full force. There’s scarcely room to move, the plug-ins are full, people turn into barnacles on seats for hours, and local meet-up groups dominate matters at 80 decibels sometimes. I’ve given up on finding a spot for other, greener pastures. When the activity between Java Hutt and AJ’s Café reaches a critical mass, there’s no where to sit on this side of Woodward until you reach Oak Park, I swear. The drinks in Java Hutt are good and no one complains if you’ve been there for a few hours. I’ve met some of the chattiest people in Ferndale here — students, activists, regular folk interested in the novel I’m writing while staring out at the Rust Belt Market. It’s a breezy place to be. Just note: paid parking all around, so be prepared to plug the meter or deal with a ticket.
