As a Flagstaff resident, I take visitors to 1899 when they want a tasty dinner in a restaurant with an upscale ambience. We’ve never been disappointed. Last night’s guests tried the half rack of ribs, the ribeye, and the Macworks. I combined two sides: steak skewers and smoked gouda-bacon mac. Not a bite was left on any plate at the end. The table shared two desserts, both delicious. My advice: don’t read the older reviews, which sometimes refer to different menus(they change seasonally). Also, be aware that the servers are college students in training. Be a good customer and help them learn how to take good care of you.

Seriously I don’t get the negative reviews. Sure it’s pricey on Flag standards, but I’ve always had excellent food. The chicken was moist and perfectly cooked, the sauce was divinely rich and a little spicy, and dammit I will learn how to make those little potato nests. Sometimes you get a server who’s a little spacey, but you’re in a college town so what do you expect? I love the interior, it’s intimate and still open, and I appreciate the eclectic menu.

Went here a few times last year as a freshman trying to use up my dining dollars. The steak was not great. Lunch sandwiches and soups were much better. The crème brûlée was fantastic and the best I’ve ever had. Giving four stars just because of that crème brûlée.

i think i was so disappointed because i really expected something wonderful, as my friends(who are also from out of town) has talked the place up saying it looked so great in pictures. It was sub par service wise, and everything was pretty much mediocre at best, and the quality to the price was just not worth it. blah, bland, eh, its kind of whatever.

Service was kind of eh. She was probably another student, but she seemed moody and didn’t really care to help us that much, besides take our orders. The prices are super expensive, so this is only for your fancy dinner sorts. I would go here again for the skewers, wish I had enough bucks to try the steak, but we’ll see next time! Hopefully better service next time I check in here.

We had a party of eight on the night before our son’s graduation at NAU. The service was great and the food was(very) good. I would have added an extra star except … I left my Filson jacket behind. My bad. The next day I went to the restaurant and asked if it was turned in(Keep in mind we were the last patrons to leave the night before… so?). The manager could not have been less helpful. It’s hard to describe. It just seemed like he could not get rid of me quick enough. I would go back because of it’s convenience to the NAU campus.

The good bits : — Food is delicious, both deserts and mains. Setting was nice The bad bits : — It was very cold inside, needs warming up. Service was slow and staff were unhappy Portions were not as big therefore the value to money was not right.

Staying @ the hotel across the street, feeling the need for meat… Never been to a «Best of Arizona» rated American food restaurant that does not have chicken as an entrée(chicken sausage is not chicken) & the only choice for beef is the 12 oz ribeye for $ 30. Really? I read all the reviews in Unilocal and yet I have no idea what to expect. My first impression is that the management is OUT-of-Touch…it always bothers me when there is no management response to consumer reviews. The inside is nice and well done(a bit funky in a hybrid sort of way). They have a house Cabernet(Bouchon) that tastes fine for $ 6. Dinner rolls are eh… served with three types of butter… no idea what they are but the pink one tastes best. I ordered the $ 30 ribeye. Comes with Brussel Sprouts and a baked potato with Gorgonzola butter. Meal is served promptly. Steak is a perfectly cooked medium. Tender. Flavorful. Sprouts are on the undercooked side of al dente and need salt. Steak sauce is good. Potato is good. Saturday night about 7:30PM, the place is half full. Mostly college kid date night, business people and families. Overall it’s been a decent bite…3−½ stars. The deduction from 4 is because there is no chicken on the menu, the brussel sprouts are undercooked and there is only one beef selection and the butter…(green, pink & yellow) is still a mystery… go pink! Dessert for me was the sorbet trio(mango, raspberry & ??)…Raspberry! Total meal cost before tip…$ 44.38 That is probably a bit much. Would have been okay with something south of $fourty$. Service was fine. Waitress was«bubbly». Enjoy…

The ribs were definitely not cooked for 6 hours. If they were they would be falling off the bone. The outer meat was tender but the inner meat was still a bit tough and stuck to the bone. Also seemed like the ribs were finished on the grill but there was no real bark. Not alot of BBQ/smoke flavor either, are they boiling them for 5 of the supposed 6 hours? House made sausage was tasty but too salty. I don’t know why you would use so much salt in a sausage that is not cured. Finally, with a menu that is so meat-focused I don’t know why they were not able to do a steak«Pittsburgh rare». It’s not that hard. Get the cast iron skillet or a 175kBTU grill crazy kiln hot and do 3 minutes per side. Also the fact that the waitress didn’t tell us they couldn’t do the steaks that way(just brought them out and said«well we did them rare») and forgot the side of crème fraîche for the salmon makes me think this is not quite the level of service they are promising. This is not at all a bad restaurant but certainly not«award winning» and«highly acclaimed», or «exceptional» as they claim to be. AND the feedback form on their website doesn’t work — so that says to me that they clearly don’t give damn — so you know, go somewhere else.

Parents were driving thru town and we ended up grabbing dinner. Heard 1899 was a NICE spot. It was nice. Service was decent. But 3 of us ordered beef, all med rare. None of us got that. 1 sent back, but gf and I didn’t want to wait so just ate it as is. Had to send moms martini back because it wasn’t right. 2nd time still wasn’t but she just kept it. Wouldn’t have been THAT bad. But for 200(with tip) WAY too much $$$$ for what we got. Too bad. Wanted to like this place.

Nice looking place, but I paid $ 30 for a Ribeye Steak that was mediocre at best. To their defense, they were serving two very large groups of people so that could have played a part. The cut of meat was very thin and the served it with a baked potato and green beens. They also serve the plate with a side of steak sauce which I actually needed which is no bueno. On the upside, the service was good and the ambience was nice.

We arrived in Flagstaff and went here at the recommendation of our hotel staff. This place definitely did not disappoint. I had the Reuben and I would say it was one of the best I’ve had! My partner had an Angus Burger that was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic!

There was four of us eating here. There were simply too many issues with the food and service to comment about. You would be better off going to Denny’s. I feel bad for the servers because orders were taking so long to get out and a lot, and I mean a lot of orders were being sent back. Some people got up and walked out. I almost felt like we were being filmed on a practical joke show. I’m sure this place will be out of business soon because you just can’t make a business survive like this.

Great place for a drink or great food! If you’re in Flagstaff, and you should try to get there in July, check out this charming spot near north campus NAU. Amazing drinks at the bar, and great people too! We just stopped in for a quick iced tea and left after having a very relaxing couple of drinks and some juicy steak skewers for a snack. I highly recommend if you want a completely different experience than the college bars in Flag. Try one of their specialty drinks listed at the bar… great prices and refreshing!

After a drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, and back down into Flagstaff, we were starving and had just parked and checked into the Drury Inn just across the street from this restaurant. I was a little hesitant to take a chance on the place given the 3-star average on Unilocal, but we were too tired and unmotivated to go anywhere else in Flagstaff and had to leave early the next morning to continue our road trip, so we were about ready to eat anything. All of the food was good. They serve warm rolls with a variety of flavored butters which were definitely worth trying. For an entrée, I had the summer sausage plus a side of mashed potatoes. The summer sausages themselves were well-spiced and perfectly cooked; very tasty. The sausages were served resting on a bed of macaroni and sauteed vegetables, which wasn’t anything too special but helped calm my growling stomach. The side of mashed potatoes was definitely worth ordering — lots of flavor, though I’m afraid to speculate regarding how many calories that one little side provided. My wife had the fish and chips and enjoyed them. I tasted the fish and it was the perfect ratio of batter to fish, lightly fried, not too greasy. Service was friendly. We were seated promptly(despite no reservation on a Friday evening) and we were well taken care of by our server. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and at the right temperature. No complaints with regard to service! Overall: Although we chose to eat here based primarily on convenience, we were pleasantly surprised to have a very positive dining experience and would actually recommend this to others passing through the area.

I have been coming to this place since it opened in 2011. I’ll be honest, many of the reviews here are correct. This place was not very good when I first started coming here. While I thought the menu was ok, the customer service was not, and thus, I only came here to celebrate the end of each semester with friends. However, in the 4 years I have been coming here, I must say that it has improved quite a bit, especially under the new chef. They have a seasonal menu which changes often apart from some of their mainstays including the burgers, steak and my personal favorite, gouda mac and cheese. As for everything else, the décor is quite nice, and contains a fireplace near the entrance where you can wait for your order if its busy, the customer service is iffy at times, which is likely due to the fact that students work there, and the food is overpriced. I think the cuts of steak here are not the best quality, but that is probably because the university has a contract that stipulates that Sodexo provide all of the food here. Still it is a decent place to visit, and I would give it a recommendation for first time visitors.

I was in Flagstaff for a few hours this past Tuesday and was absolutely starving, I don’t even think it was until 4pm that I ate lunch! I had asked one of my customers where to go after I’d looked up a few things on Unilocal and he had suggested here. I was a bit weary of going to a place where college students can eat with their meal card but I will say I was quite impressed. Because I came during the happy hour time I immediately went for their edamame, literally some of the best edamame I’ve ever eaten! I think it was boiled and then tossed with olive oil, it had a slight oily taste to it and then sprinkled with rock salt, very good and the huge bowl was only $ 2 on happy hour. For my main food I ordered 2 sides, I couldn’t pin point what I wanted so I had a side of the salmon which usually comes on the salads and a side of the asparagus and both were truly delicious! I had a really nice server who gave me a few refills on my diet coke and let me know about all of their most popular menu items. The place is nice inside, clean, trendy, they offer delicious food, great drinks and have a fabulous happy hour menu!

Vegetarian selections are very minimal and overpriced, but they are pretty delicious. Great place to go and use the remainder of your meal plan money if it’s close to the end of the semester. The desserts are fantastic. The service was good, not the best I’ve had but not the worst either. Good for groups.

Had a party of four that were tired after a daylong trip to the canyon. This place was across the street from the hotel so we decided to give it a try. Nope. Two had the Scallops that were over-cooked and included some sort of funky corn cake. Another had Elk Osso Buco which was tough, and finally a Ribeye which was way over seasoned. Overall a forgettable dining experience highlighted by an annoying guitar /singer in the corner. Would not visit again.
