I just moved here from New Mexico and a friend of mine introduced me to Hunan West. I was a little leary at first. Once I got inside, the owners wife came over to speak with my friend. She asked my name and has not forgotten it. Each time I go in there, she calls me by name and knows how much I like their egg flower soup. I have tried beef, pork, chicken, and chow mein and all of it has been great. I have met the owner and the wait staff are always friendly. It is very clean and I have never had to wait to be seated. The take out food is just as good as eating at the restaurant. I have thought about trying other chinese restaurants in town, but I cannot seem to convince myself to do it.

Very inexpensive, quick service, and great food. I am such a fan of this place. Mongolian Beef, Hot and Sour Soup, and House FR. There are six of us so we all have something different to share. No MSG so no headache 30 minutes after… just hungry for more Hunan West!

Considering the selection of Chinese restaurants in Flag, it’s been a hit or miss. I’ve always gotten the same thing, chicken chow mein and beef and broccoli. One thing I’ve learned is that«hole in the wall» type places never really have good service or have the best layout. So, you basically get what you pay for. With that said, I’ve been satisfied with the food. Its a tad greasy, It’s not like I’m dining there on a regular basis enough to pick apart everything about the place. Its comfort food, not fine dining. It’s food that fills the belly.

At here for the first time today. Met up with a friend, who recommended Hunan West. My meal was delicious, hot, and the perfect portion. Wasn’t to big or to small. Had the beef with broccoli. Highly recommend this place.

I love eating here, you get a lot of food for the price. I would give it 5 stars just for the food, but while waiting for my to-go order today, one of the owners was sitting in the middle of the dining area folding wontons in front of eating customers. She didn’t have gloves on and started touching other things, then back to folding wontons without washing her hands. She even wiped her hands on a dirty cleaning rag. Then another worker was spraying tables with cleaner next to her. Good thing they’re fried and it will probably kill any germs! I don’t work for the health department, but I’m pretty sure this is a violation lol. If folding wontons in the middle of the lunch rush is acceptable, I can only imagine what goes on in the back! I’m trying not to think about it. I’ll probably continue eating here, just minus the wontons! And on a side note, I’ve never gotten sick here in the 6 yrs I’ve been eating here on a regular basis. I have a really weak stomach, so that says a lot! I have to update my review since returning home with my to-go order. I ordered the chicken egg foo young and moo goo gai pan that I normally order. If this was my first time eating there, I’d probably never go back. Maybe there’s a new cook or just a different one for lunch, but it was nasty!!! No flavor, no seasonings, no color, just plain bland food. I’ve never experienced this from there. Kinda disappointed, but now I can understand the other bad reviews on the food. I’ll give it another shot in the future, but if it’s anything like lunch, I’ll never return.

Best Chinese you’ll get in Flagstaff. They’re quick, the takeout is convenient, and they have special takeout parking spots in front. Had the Mongolian beef. Delicious. They go a little heavy with the green onions for my taste, but otherwise great.

While visiting from Southern California, our family got snowed in so we found this restaurant closest to our hotel. I’ll admit that I didn’t have high expectations, since many Chinese restaurants are greasy, salty, and American versions of good Chinese dishes– BUT this place was amazing! We ordered 7 items and soup to go. I recommend the special«8 Treasures» and it was the best dish I’ve had in a long time. The mushu pork was not over cooked and the orange chicken was crunchy and just sweet enough. The boys loved the shrimp fried rice. Since we ordered everything to go, they packed it all up perfectly, and the owner was really nice!

Walked in and waited five minutes to be seated, when only three other families were in the entire place. Then a family of five comes in a few minutes after us, sits down, and receives menus and drinks. Meanwhile we are seated and don’t receive any acknowledgement from staff. We waited about ten minutes after being seated before walking out. We knew once the family placed their food orders before we even received a menu, water, or silverware that the service would be terrible. We had never tried Hunan West before and now we won’t go back. Going 15 minutes without a menu, water, or acknowledgment is unacceptable.

Love this place! The lunch special is such a good deal. The hot and sour soup is always good and the proportions for the main course is enough for leftovers. I recommend the cashew chicken. The staff is so nice and usually quick with our food.

Went here last night I would give this place a lower rating but the egg flower soup was really good for Arizona egg flower soup. I’m giving this place a 3 because I found a black hair under my rangoon! I was so sad! The rangoon was so good until I notice the hair. My last reasoning is the main dishe I got was kind of nasty. My Mongolian beef tasted burnt and it was super greasy. I’ve eaten many Mongolian beef dishes before so I know how it’s supposed to taste. Not sure If I will eat here again.

Everything was good and the family running the restaurant was very nice and friendly. Even with how busy they were our waitress kept up with all of our needs. Orange peel chicken was very good! Restaurant was nicely adorned and clean. Great job!

Just tried this tonight with some friends. We were all pretty excited because there are not too many great Chinese restaurants here. The value seemed great, but as soon as we got our main dishes, we were all pretty disgusted. We couldn’t even finish our food. It was flavorless and had some odd textures. We walked out and about 20 minutes later we were all sick. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

It was good. The food was hot and fresh, the service was lacking but over all a decent choice

There are two Hunan’s in Flagstaff, this one is on Milton near Safeway, and the other one is on 4th street near Radio Shack and called Hunan East. They are not affiliated with each other. The legend goes that this is the original one, and that the 4th street one is an imposter. I am sure that there exists some record to make this straight, but in reality, I don’t really care. All I care about is the quality of the food, and given my experiences at this place, I must say that it is not my favorite. First, I must say the portions are huge for what you pay for. I got a nice big helping of chicken and broccoli for about $ 7 and I thought the crab puffs were amazing. The portions were big enough for me to make another meal of, however the taste was just average. I thought that there was a definite lack of sauce, and needed to put soy sauce on it to make it better palatable. Also, the customer service was sorely lacking here and it took a while for them to get water and some of the people who worked here seemed aloof. It isn’t a horrible place, but you can find better in town.

It has become something of a ritual for me and my sister to eat here Tuesday nights and we are never disappointed. It’s a great value for the lunch and dinner specials and I would recommend the hot and sour soup, jasmine hot tea, and Mongolian chicken. The staff is also always accommodating and friendly!

Good portion, and the taste of the food did not have much to do with Hunan cuisine(hot and spicy);a family run diner with friendly services just right for a inexpensive meal.

As we all know some dishes are hit or miss at Chinese restaurants, i guarantee if you get the orange chicken with extra sauce you will not be disappointed.

I love it here! Rita is a wonderful lady and the food is delicious. This is NOT Hunan east and has nothing to do with them!!! Crab cheese puffs are made with love here.

It was a only 5 minutes walk to here where I lived during college years. My roommate actually was a waitress here. The manager and staff there are really nice. They actually make conversations with you. Very talkative. It’s a good thing. It’s a small restaurant. I can’t say it’s clean… but presentable I guess. The food is pretty good. Love their soup. It is pricey though. Go for the other dishes. spicy dishes!.. rather than orange chicken. The fried rice are very good. Apparently, I sorta heard they are somewhat related or competing with China Garden Restaurant. Interesting. Haha
