This place has a wide variety of bread to choose from. However I only really ever came here to buy Challah bread. They definitely know their stuff and on occasion I have sampled some of their other creations such as their French bread, which is pretty good. Their Challah bread is ok. It’s small for my taste, and much chewier than I like. I am not sure if it’s because of the elevation that it tastes like that, but I have had Challah at the Rabbi’s house and it was nothing like this. Also, it can be a bit expensive, which is typical for Flagstaff. Still, it’s a cool little bakery and I would recommend it to anyone in needed of fresh bread.

This is the best bread(and pastries) you will ever have. They use old-world recipes, techniques and bake it all in an oven brought over from France. This is decades of craft and care baked into every loaf. The cranberry hazelnut IS the best. bread. EVER. Do not under estimate this place. I travel a lot to Arizona, and I am sure to go here whenever possible. I send everyone I do business with here.

The Village Baker makes the best bread in the west. Great recipes, great techniques, and great people, are just the start of what makes this bakery special. I notice that some other reviews complain about cleanliness, but those fears are unfounded. Also, some are upset that product sells out. It’s a bakery using no preservatives, get up earlier. Don’t visit Flagstaff without leaving with a loaf or two. You’ll be glad you did.

I was on my way into Safeway when I noticed this little bakery. I got a Honey Whole Wheat loaf($ 5.00) and it was delicious! The outside was crunchy/crisp and the inside was super fluffy and tasty. They were out of the hazelnut cranberry when I went in, but I plan to go back and taste that one as well. I will definitely be back.

This place is what I wish my kitchen smelled like. Such great bread. And people!!! The sourdough makes everything better. And if you want to get a little crazy, their cranberry hazelnut loaf will have you making up reasons to sneak into your bread box. Me: «Oh I just checked the mail… should probably make toast.» Yeah, it’s that big of a deal.

HEAVYHEAVYHEAVYDENSE bread. Let me say that I think the bakery has gone down in quality over the years. I still enjoy their chibatta but I felt it was much better a few years back when they made in their baguette style. Their bread loafs are good. A little heavy at times. My only issue is their baguette. I feel the baguette is not what a true french baguette should be. For one it’s too big and is a bit on the heavy side as well. Too dense. Not enough large and irregular holes in it. The outer crust just needs a few more minutes in the oven. Should be Golden brown not some golden brown but mostly white still. Thats just my opinion but also note that I have had many baking classes from Master bakers as well as going to France and experiencing the real deal from known great boulangerie. The bread here is still good but I wish it was just a bit better so I can come in for a fresh baguette at 3pm everyday. I will end up doing my own I am sure. I am by no means being a snot but when have a good baguette it’s hard to take anything less.

Let me just start by saying that The Village Baker has the best bread I’ve ever tasted. Ever. And I’ve had some amazing bread in my day. They have a wide variety of different types of bread — whites, french country white, rye, whole wheat, sourdough, kalamata olive, challah, etc. I usually get the french country pan loaf because with some butter and raspberry preserves it’s like eating a fresh croissant! They have day old loaves that you can pick up at a discount by the door, and you can choose to get the bread sliced right there(they come unsliced) or just take the loaf as is. Village Baker also sells bread at the farmer’s market on Sunday — so I’ve often picked some up there as well. So get your groceries at Safeway(sans bread) and then finish your trip at The Village Baker… you won’t be disappointed! Just remember to get cash at the Safeway checkout or ATM, because The Village Baker only takes cash or check!

I feel like someone is playing a prank on me by saying no one has reviewed this place on Unilocal yet… the Village Baker is so cool! How have I been missing it all these years? Well, probably because it’s a little bit hidden, tucked into the space right next to Safeway. While shoppers go in and out buying their plain jane bread at Safeway, I sneak away to get my loaves here! They are so delicious! Bread usually ranges from $ 3 – 5 for an average sized loaf. They have all the usual stuff like sourdough, baguettes, and just plain bread. But they also have tasty flavors like OLIVELOAF! OLIVELOAF! That was in all caps because it was delicious. Abandon the grocery store! Get your bread from this delicious, fresh shop!
