Surf lessons were the highlight of my trip! The first part of the lesson was on land which was great for building the muscle memory of how to stand up on the board. The instructor built such a great foundation, I was riding waves in no time. He was encouraging, patient, and knowledgable; when I fell, he could point out what I did wrong and helped me correct the mistake. I felt safe the entire time. I have never had so much fun at the beach in my life!!!

We reserved lessons the day before online. The instructors were slightly disorganized, but my kids had fun and didn’t drown, which were my only goals. The surfboards they used were lighter than what my kids have used on other vacations, making it easier for them to carry on their own but harder to get up. No need to bring your own rash guard because they want you to wear theirs to find you in the water amongst the masses.

I’m still on a high from riding my first wave this morning!
When you think of world-​class surfers, images of Hawaii and Australia may spring to mind, but read Josh’s resume– we’ve got our own world-​class guy right here on Folly Beach. Not only is he a world-​class surfer, but he’s an equally accomplished and patient teacher.
If he got my big burly ass to ride a wave, he can do the same for you.
I can only imagine how good he’d be at refining the technique of someone who already has the basics down, or who was thinking of competing.
If you live in Charleston, or are visiting, and want to try surfing– from what I hear it’s one of the best places to learn. The water is bath-​tub warm, the waves aren’t huge, everyone’s friendly, & there’s nothing but sand under-​foot. This is a perfect place to be introduced to the sport.

my 9 yr old daughter and I took lessons from Josh. He was just terrific. Starts you off on the beach and then in the water. My daughter got freaked out with the big waves and he really talked her back in and she got back up on the board 3 more times!!! He had good spirits with me and was super encouraging!
