We arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday and there were only four cars in the parking lot, which should have been a sign to us to go somewhere else. Nonetheless, we were really hungry after driving for four hours and needed sustenance. We were seated by a less than enthusiastic hostess and then after waiting 10 minutes without being greeted by a server we asked if we had a server. After getting a server we immediately gave them our order and thought all would now be well. We couldn’t have been more wrong. After waiting another 30 minutes, and watching others that came in behind us get their food, we asked about our order. After checking on our order our server told us that the cook had lost the order. The server apologized profusely but we couldn’t wait any longer considering we still had a two hour drive ahead of us. He comped us the one coffee my wife had drank and we left for McDonald’s across the street. This staff, including the cook, seemed to be either overwhelmed or lethargic.

Y’know. It’s Denny’s. They’re open late, for which they deserve a half star. Their management has at times over their history treated employees and customers alike as if they were trash. I sometimes go if it’s particularly late and I don’t feel like fast food. Beyond those very specific conditions, I see no reason to ever go. Is the food awful? No. How about the staff? Well, that depends on the day. My personal experiences there have been just fine, but my family has experienced such unjustifiable rudeness that many of them boycott this establishment. They could do things for less. The prices were once reasonable, and no longer are. This is truly a destination of last resort.

Daybreak Café, my favorite breakfast establishment in Port Huron, was closed on July 4th. Woe is me! I don’t know why my boyfriend decided to go to Denny’s instead of Big Boy or even McDonald’s. I question his judgment sometimes. The food was edible. The service was very friendly, maybe a little disorganized. I got my Grand Slam and left feeling like … I just had breakfast at a Denny’s.

Curses! You simply cannot compete with these kind of hours. I have no idea what this place looks like when its not between 2:30am and 5am. If something else is open I find it, but during the no mans land of restaurant hours, there will be bleery eyed grease hounds in various states of caffeination howling for more. OK Moons over my Hammy with a side of onion rings. And NO I haven’t had enough coffee yet!

This is the Denny’s of my youth. When you are a high schooler living in a tiny town 45 minutes outside of the small town of Port Huron, Michigan, there’s really not all that much to do at night. Most things aren’t open past 9, let alone 24 hours. So this Denny’s was(probably still is) a gathering place for all the high school ruffians out way too late on a school night and looking for a basket of fried junk food. As far as lame salads go, the garden salad with ranch here will always beat Cowgirl’s stupid white-trash-but-cool wedge of iceberg. There’s something to eating food without having to stomach irony as well. Denny’s also now serves Boca burgers, which they totally didn’t do when I was a pup. And as a vegetarian often stuck visiting the family in middle America, it’s nice to be able to get something nearly nutritious for lunch. So if you’re 17, and you wasted 1.5 hours driving to Ann Arbor or Royal Oak or whatever only to have your fake ID laughed at by the door guy at some cool bar or club, take solace knowing that a basket of onion rings and a strawberry milkshake will always welcome you and your pals after the 1.5 hour drive back to nowhere. And you’ll need it, because it’s 3 in the morning and you’ve got a test in first period Bio at 8!!!
