The food is fresh and tasty but the portion is tiny. Get ready to spend 50 per person just to get food. 80 if you plan on drinking. The owner is nice to her friends but new faces get poor service. Be careful about their soft drinks. They don’t offer refills but still will fill your drinks with full charges per glass. Don’t be surprised to spend over 10 bucks just on fountain drinks.

If the owners don’t know you here you get ignored. Had to get our own menu. It was our first time here and will never return. Sushi rolls have more rice than fish and are average tasting. No one checked on us during the whole time we were dining had to ask for ice bucket and glasses for our wine, dinner took over a half hour to come. And it wasn’t overly busy to have to take that long to make sushi rolls. Was difficult getting a check had to get up and find owner to give it to her. I have had much better sushi elsewhere and definitely better service. My husband and I don’t plan on returning.

This place is a very good place if you have a Susie craving, I took my co worker here to have dinner one night, friendly staff and everything décor is nice, and everything was full of flavor, it’s right next to my favorite Resturaunt too, Miss Saigon, so I guess this plaza has 2 reasons why I will come back.

Sushi by Kazu is one of the best sushi restaurants in NJ. We’ve been going to Kazu since the 90’s when they started out in Howell. The fish is always fresh and of the best quality. My favorite dishes are the fancy spicy tuna and the white tuna miso avocado salad, but seriously, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

My family and I have been eating at Sushi By Kazu since they were located in Howell. Fish is always fresh and masterfully presented. Favorites include the Tuna Avocado Miso, Monkfish Liver(for the adventurous), Yellowtail Carpaccio Salad, Tina Don and the shrimp dumplings. Kazu and his wife are a great team and always welcoming. For those who want to experience authentic Japanese cuisine in Monmouth county, this is your place!

First off I would like to say that the fish is fresh but… No hot entrees? I brought my kids in for chicken Katsu nope! The waitress told me they haven’t had a chef/line cook in almost 1 year lol. So I told Kazu the«chef» I have extensive knowledge of Japanese cuisine and I would love to help him get his kitchen up and going again. So he says to me «I look for Japanese guy lol» meanwhile there’s a Mexican working side by side rolling? Needless to say I will never be going back to Sushi by miserable sushi guy. And sushi portions are extremely small and super expensive.

Sushi was fresh, but portion was small. We ordered the biggest sushi platter(it was like $ 70) they have on the menu, and it said for 2 people, and the waitress told us that«it’s a lot.» But the portion was actually quite small for that price, and I was not even a quarter full after eating every edible thing on the plate. Although the sushi was fresh, nothing’s really stand out compare to other sushi restaurants in Monmouth County. I left this place hungry, and quite sad because we spent a lot $ and we were still not full.

What a great find! A high quality, family owned sushi restaurant. The sushi is amazing and the service was so very friendly, simple and elegant. Kazu and Mayumi are wonderful hosts. I felt like I was part of the family!!! Reasonably priced and just so friendly, I look forward to coming back. Love and highly recommend the special roll with caviar and the tuna miso salad!!! Share it and enjoy it! Great local neighborhood vibe!!!

I have been going here for about a year now and everytime the food has been excellent. The fish there is extremely fresh and has the best quality in the area. I love the toro there although it may be a bit pricey but it is totally worth it! Very authentic and very delicious!

Easily the Best Sushi I’ve ever had! Sushi by Kazu is owned by Japanese people and they serve the most authentic Japanese cuisine in New Jersey. After the first time, I fell in love and now am a regular at Kazu. The service is always great(checks on you regularly and refills drinks). The chef, Kazu, always has a great smile on his face and greets all the customers. Now, on to the food, Kazu’s sashimi is really fresh. My usuals are the Bluefin Tuna Toro(Fatty Tuna) my favorite!, their Uni(Sea Urchin) is always very creamy, and their Red Snapper Carpaccio Salad which I get 2 orders every time I go because it tastes like heaven in your mouth. Sushi by Kazu is definitely one of my favorite s and you should give it a try because you won’t regret it. This is as close to authentic Japanese food in New Jersey and better than the ones out in New York

If you don’t like the sushi here, it means you don’t like authentic Japanese-style sushi. This is one of the few restaurant in New Jersey that prepared sushi the traditional Japanese way. If you want sushi that are drowned in different sauces and seasoning, this is not the place for you. If you enjoy the subtleties of Japanese sushi — perfectly cooked rice(sticky and fluffy) with a hint seasoning with well proportion-size fresh slice of sashimi on top — this is the place. The only quibble I have with this place is the last couple times I visit, their kitchen won’t make entrée portion of cooked dishes. This make ordering for my two young children a bit difficult. All in all, I love this place when I am craving sushi.

I don’t know who are the people that wrote these reviews, but they definitely never tried really good rolls. I was never so mad with a 100 $ spent on a rolls. You cant call it sushi. It taste like a rice with a hint of seafood. Too much rice. Little bit of seafood inside. Doesn’t worth the money you pay. I ve tried over 30 different japanese restaurants for the past years and this is the worst one.

This is by far the best sushi in monmouth county. The food is exceptionally fresh and delicious. Every time I have gone to kazu, the service is also fantastic. The servers are very attentive and make sure you have everything you need. I was very impressed with how the family who owns the restaurant does all they can to make the dining experience special and nice for the customers. If you want fresh sushi that’s delicious and to have a relaxing dining experience, then go to kazu!

Hmm. Let’s see. Soup was real good. Kani salad tastes like Pure Hellmanns mayonnaise. The sushi wasn’t good. I actually saw him grab a dis colored scrap for my roll. The rice isn’t warm, which it should be. There was too much rice to filling and rice was actually overcooked and pasty. There is no way this place has 5 stars. I think those people who wrote those comments must be their best friends. They can decorate a mediocre roll pretty but that doesn’t make the roll better. You get 2 stars for your soup. They give you one piece of moochi cut up into 6 thinking they could actually make it look like more. If you want to try amazing sushi go to little silver kissui. Best sushi in nj. These guys who wrote these reviews have no clue anything about sushi. I am a former head chef. I know exactly what I am talking about.

Had been to the Howell location a couple times, and wanted to try the new Freehold location. Ambience: Simple but beautiful conversion of a strip mall space to a Japanese sushi house. Meticulously clean/neat. A small serving of pickled items was offered to each of us on being seated. Service: Perfect. Warm and friendly young server. Clearly explained specials and answered questions. Verified order, and asked for our preference in order of presentation and timing. Attentive followup. Hot tea was replaced regularly. Apps: Spicy clam miso soup(from specials board) was excellent. Nice level of heat. Salmon carpaccio salad — absolutely the best in presentation, content, taste and texture. A work of art that delivered the goods. Wish I had taken a picture. Rolls: Here’s where things got a little«mixed» and this may be due to our knowledge or lack thereof. The rolls were meticulously constructed, firm rice, two had white seaweed wrap, simple — minimum of «sauces» and ingredients other than very fresh fish. Looked great, but in our opinion, did not quite deliver. The issue we both came up with independently was a mismatch on the ratio of rice to fish. The rice was much thicker than what is shown in the Unilocal photos, and fish portion smaller, and as a result, we felt the large amount of firm rice limited the ability to sense the texture and flavor of the fish. Even the eel special roll overwhelmed the seemingly small quantity of eel with the excessive cucumber(internal strip, and an exterior wrap). Again… Could be our problem. Maybe we are too used to the Americanized version of roll sushi to recognize the superiority of the authentic Japanese preparation. Dessert: Mrs. I. likes uni sashimi for dessert, and the first serving was so good that she ordered a second. I am not an uni fan, but I tried a couple tastes, and it seemed superior to anything I had sampled at other establishments. My green tea mochi was good, but a small serving. I will post a 4-star rating. But be forewarned… when you dine here, do not expect it to be quite like the average strip mall sushi joint.(Revised 03÷31÷15)

I started going to sushi by kazu when he was in a little teeny store in Howell. Loved it then, love it now. When he moved in to bigger quarters he hired another sushi chef but so far I have not ever had a bad meal. My favorites are the avocado tuna miso salad which I could just eat forever. The jumbo shrimp in soy paper is priceless and I get both of these plates every time I go. The service is good, and the specials on the board are the way to go if you want to try something different. It is the best sushi in the area. I go to Mahzu and osaka tso also but Kazu has the most tasty sushi around. Konbu is fine for all of these are mediocre made by chinese cooks. Only kazu is the real deal.

Fresh sashimi –recommend the salmon and tuna Entrees are probably the most costly dishes, other dishes are fairly priced –some rolls are pricey, but the taste and quality is worth the extra $$$ Wasabi packs a punch, stronger than most places Ginger is nice and pink, on point

THE best sushi in the tri-state area. ACTUAL Japanese restaurant. Owners are from Japan and extremely nice. The fish is the freshest around. They’re not the the most accommodating here unfortunately, won’t really do many substitutions and they don’t have brown rice. BUT that’s because they refuse to veer away from TRADITIONAL Japanese style. The best menu items are on the specials board. Must have: White Tuna Avocado Miso Salad — a sashimi salad to die for(no lettuce involved) Yes, some of the sushi appetizers are a bit expensive, but its a small price to pay fort he freshest, safest sushi around. The consistency here is impeccable and it’s very hard for me to eat anywhere else having tasted Kazu’s masterpieces.
