I trained with them for a couple years and live nearby. I have 20 years martial arts experience and thought this would be a great addition. Blew out my ACL trying to do a jump. Then I practiced Chi Gong until they cut back those classes to once a week. When I mentioned this as an issue, I was told — you are a Kung Fu Student, that’s what you signed up for. I left. When they first came I thought, great real Shaolin in Fremont. I thought they were starting small and perhaps going to build a real temple or community. Turns out they are just building corner Kung Fu shops My two primary instructors were great guys, but they and others I had grown fond of would suddenly disappear, without warning or explanation. I don’t speak Mandarin and the instructors English is very limited. Their English would improve and they would come to know where I was in the training and what my abilities were. Then they would disappear. Now every time I drive by I see new instructors. Bottom line, if you do not speak Mandarin and are looking for functional self defense for protection etc go elsewhere.

I started training at the Shaolin Temple USA4 years ago, at first once a week because at 40+++ I had never done any Kung Fu, I now go almost every day. My rational for joining at first was that it felt like a real waste to have world-renowned Kung Fu teachers in my neighborhood and not to try to learn from them. The teachers are amazing, not only for their skills but for their patience in teaching us, it may have taken me 12 hours(3 months) to learn«5 motions», their persistence and their people and coaching skills. Color belts are not part of the original Shaolin Kung Fu training, it was introduced specifically for the Western minds who want to see steady measurable progress. The Sifus do vary the exercise based on the belts of the students: one row of students may cross the room doing horse stance double punch while the next row crosses the room doing forward sweeps. I personally enjoy the mixed classes. First it gives me a chance to review earlier forms(e.g. broad sword) and a chance to peek those I haven’t yet learned(e.g. seven stars fist). Second, it gives a chance for students to gain a deeper understanding by helping out less advanced students during practice time. The outside area where students may practice, mostly weapon, is at a safe distance from the street and separated from the sidewalk by a distance that most people cannot jump across. It is my preferred place to practice on my own.

Shaolin Temple in Fremont is not well organized. Students with different belts have to take the classes together. Yet there is not enough room for all of them. There were times that some students had to practice outdoor while others were practicing indoor. Students practicing outdoor were at risk due to the traffics nearby. Cars drove by really fast along the road, yet some students were asked to practice right by the curb. There were strangers walked by when students were practicing outdoor. Should there be any danger happen to the students outdoor, those masters might not be able to help as they were mostly teaching the students indoor. They could have limit on student size for each class or limit the belt color to only one type without mixing different young students in the same class. Yet they rather maximized the class size due to higher profit for them.
