As a child growing up in the East Bay, I remember my mom bringing home the«star and moon» cookies every year around the holidays. I never forgot their delicious, buttery almond flavor. I haven’t seen them in the grocery stores I visit around Sonoma County, so I started Googling. «Spritz cookies star and moon shape,» «Holiday spritz cookies,» and so forth yielded me no results as Google searches. I finally texted my mom… «hey, remember those star and moon cookies you used to buy?» Her: «Spaans!» Me: «Holy crap, you remembered the brands?» Her: «How could I not, I f***ing love them!» I did what any other self-respecting cookie lover would do and found their website. To my pleasant surprise, I found them online and ordered 3 boxes. They were UPS’d to me in excellent packaging. The shipping was a little steep, but it was WORTH it. My wife and I are finishing our second box, and the third box was mailed to, you guessed it, my mom! These delicious cookies are not to be passed up, and they taste every bit as good as I remembered them as a child 20 years ago.

I probably should have checked out the pictures on here to realize this place was completely not what I was expecting. We’re from out of town and looked on Unilocal for a good bakery/cookie place. I was thinking it was a shop that had a whole display case of fresh baked variety cookies but when I walked in the store the display case was empty. Maybe I came at the wrong time of day? They only had tiny dry looking cookies in boxes and then the rest of the store was random stuff to buy for your home. I had totally gotten my hopes up thinking this was a huge fresh bakery. Maybe it is and I came at a bad time?

Love this place. Found it while wondering Galt. The lemon turnover is awesome. YUM, like a nice curd inside of it with enough lemon taste. We also bought the seeded bread, very good. It is a bit hard to slice and falls apart some, but it is very good. The cookies WOW. The Russian Tea cookie is great. We also bought the ginger and windmill cookies. Love it and wish we lived a whole lot closer!

I had typed this long review as to why I gave it a 1. It was such a special place to me as a child, I just rather leave my review as disappointed and heart broken for my children. The customer service is not what it used to be. That’s a shame. To the employee, I may not look like I have much, maybe compared to you I don’t but one thing I know is my three kids didn’t deserve your lack luster customer service. You didn’t have to say much I can tell when a person is judging me. I really hope you were just having an off day, and that tomorrow is better for you. And my kids who may look like they are hoodlums with crazy hair cuts and earrings… they are all straight A student’s on the Elk Grove District Honor Roll. I let my kids dress and look the way they want because there grades and behavior is outstanding. They treat all people with equal respect, and so should you. Greetings us with a smile and thanking us would have made a big difference.

Childhood memories are lurking in this cookie shop like ghosts. Booooooooo!!! Although with the recent remodeling and few changes over the years, it hasn’t changed the taste of the cookies. Customers no longer get the beautiful factory view of cookies traveling along a belt. That was quite a bummer since I brought my 2 year old little charmer. My nephew was quick to pick what he liked, which was the banana flavored lollipop by Jelly Belly. Dad and I were a bit disappointed they didn’t sell«broken cookies.» They used to have a section with slightly broken cookies on sale. Well… when they go in your mouth… they’re gonna break anyways! Lol. Plus 2 bargain hunters in one place together and it spells trouble. There’s a section for sugar free cookies as well. We picked up a small box for granny. 3 big boxes for the rest of the fam bam. Dad doesn’t enjoy chocolate so he got oatmeal raisin. I decided on the walnut chocolate chip. *There’s a whole gift shop section. *Place is slightly museum-ish. *Few baked goods sold individually upfront. *Customer service is a bit on the dry end. *Parking in front of store.

I’m half German and miss my Grandma Stigelmayer baking. Spaans gets as close as you can. Realize I’m a little picky. Did I hear Spaans Cookies in Sacramento. Go for it Rick.

I haven’t had time to go back into this cute store. I did get a quick response from Rick but I was slow to respond back.(Sorry) He did offer the difference of the mishap and a free tub of cookies for my time. Honestly… it was not the lady’s fault. We were having good conversation. So… I heard thru the grapevine that the pie is to die for. Lol. Will have to venture in and give it a try! Thanks, again, for your generosity and kind words.

Just went to check this place out today because I heard them on the local news radio so I was super excited to try them out. The store itself is nice and big, clean with nice people working there. Today was their first time offering samples of everything they sell, or at least most of it. They’re supposed to be known for their cookies which I thought was ok… I’m more of a chewy cookie kind of girl and most of what they have are crunchy cookies. I tried a few different flavors including the chocolate chip button cookies, cranberry cookies, lemon, chocolate caramel sea salt, and their snickerdoodle. I ended up getting a box of the chocolate chip and the chocolate caramel just to get something to bring home to the kids. I also tried their cheesecake, peach pie, and their carrot cake. I’m normally not much of a fruit pie person since they’re always too sweet for me, but their peach pie was actually pretty good, nice real peach slices that really tasted like peaches and not just canned sugared down peaches. The carrot cake was mine and my husband’s favorite so we were anxious to be able to take a nice cake home! When we went to the display however there was no cake, it turned out that they forgot to make any!?! How could you make some for samples but not make any to sell? I was so disappointed since I dragged my husband all the way there from Elk Grove and we had to leave without the one thing we liked most. If we ever go past or towards Galt again we might stop by to see if they have any carrot cake, but I’m not sure if we’ll make the drive just for the heck of it like we did today.

I love coming here! The teas are the one thing that keep me coming back. It’s pricey but if you don’t mind the price then I can actually say its worth it!

I was introduced to Spaans when I was in high school. My mom met a woman who grew up in Galt, she introduced our family and we have been hooked since! I have never tasted a Spaans cookie that I didn’t like! From chocolate, peanut butter, spice, lemon, oatmeal, nuts, no nuts, even plain cut out cookies for holiday decorating! They always have something for everyone! A great selection of regular and sugar-free options! More recently, we dove into the rolls, pies, kutchen arena and are still BLOWN away! BEST rolls EVER! The price cannot be beat! And the homemade with love feature is just a bonus! Pie. Oh lord. I have yet to try them all; but the apple is the BEST apple pie I have EVER had — and made with local apples! Yeah! The Pumpkin pie is perfect. The sugar-free chocolate cream pie has been perfected, and doesn’t «taste» sugar free. The lemon meringue is the BEST I have had for as long as I can remember. The meringue to lemon filling to PERFECTION! Coconut cream pie… you will never want another brand! Flavorful and full of deliciousness! I had never heard of kutchen, but my mom and have each bought them… both the peach and apricot are delicious, and a nice change for a sweet treat! As if the baked goods don’t speak for themselves, the staff is ALWAYS ready to help you, are ALWAYS knowledgeable, and are ALWAYS friendly and do everything with a SMILE. The whole atmosphere of the bakery is family and it’s such a welcoming space to enter! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. LOVE Spaans, and if you are on the fence about trying them out, DOIT! You won’t regret it!

I had never heard of this place until we bought a house in Galt. Not only was I surprised that I love living in Galt, but this place that I drive by everyday has top of the line cookies among other deserts. I have only tried the cookies so far, but the peanut butter cookies are delicious as well as the chocolate chip. They have so many different kinds to choose from. This place is better than the places in Los Angeles and Sacramento that I have been too.

Although they are known mostly for their cookies, they also make the very best pies and rolls. I love the fruit pies and my gf loves the chocolate pies. Perfect crust, perfect sweetness, perfect pies. The rolls are like heaven in your mouth. I grew up on the cookies, which or course the chocolate fudge ones are a must try. They also have meringue cookies now also. I really like them too. Great cookie company. Great family. Great local business.

Bought a container of the Fat Free Oatmeal and Raisin cookies while on vacation at a grocery store in California. Healthy snacks don’t get any better than that. Disappointed to find no availability in Canada! Will try the mail order option.

I have never actually been to Spaan’s bakery but I have been lucky enough to try their pies on a couple of occasions. The crusts are flaky, buttery, flavorful and wonderfully perfect. I have had rhubarb and even though rhubarb is not my favorite I must admit it was pretty good. However, I have also had their peach pie. OMG — It was really, really good. Not overly sweet and not too runny. Yes, I would drive all of the way to Galt to buy a peach pie.

Back in the 80s, my Grandma would trek«all the way» to Galt and bring packages of Spaan’s cookies back to Stockton. I vividly remember soft, brownie-like mounds of chocolate cookies and thick, buttery crescents studded with almonds. Luckily, Spaan’s is still in business, and they’re still turning out those Fudge Brownie cookies(by the bucket now) along with 2 dozen other varieties. Among the various samples I managed to shove down my throat when I thought the cashier wasn’t looking were the soft Gingerbread. Holy Lord. I wish I never knew they were only half a gram of fat and 40 calories each. I’m in trouble.

I was working at CVS in Galt today and had some spare time, so I decided to Unilocal some places to go. When I saw a 5 star review for a bakery… well, you can guess what happened next. It really is more of a cookie company than a bakery. Upon entering you’ll find boxes and boxes of cookies stacked high. The woman working the counter took an interest in me when she found out I was from out of town and tried to recommend a few things to me. The bakery case held a small selection of items, I remember brownies, pies, scones. The chocolate crème pie looked tempting, but there was no way that would last out in my car for 3 hours. The space was very big and I wandered for a little bit in the two rooms. Off the top of my head there were chocolate chip button cookies, fudge chocolate cookies, gingerbread, lemon, dulce de leche meringue, regular meringue, oatmeal raisin, peanut, spice windmill, and oatmeal. I bought two«small» boxes of cookies for $ 3.50 each. They were definitely a good size and will last me at least two weeks. There were a few boxes of meringue cookies that were marked as sample so I got to taste them… yummy! They also had a special section marked«gluten free» and«sugar free», and the selection was definitely not lacking. My only complaint is that I wasn’t able to purchase individual cookies, since I sort of wanted to try them all. Oh well. As soon as I got to the car I opened my windmill spice cookies and bit it. Very good, the spice flavorings are so homey and immediately made me think of autumn, reminds me of my much beloved Pumpkin Spice latte… I’m sure the two will pair beautifully. My fudge chocolate cookies were wonderfully dense, chewy, and chocolatey. Overall I’m very happy with my two purchases and if I were ever back in the area I would definitely pop in again!
