I love Mexican, and specifically I love these dive-y little taco bars. I love and frequently visit both Taco Bar(at the Rio) and Tortacos. I feel like I eat enough of this sort of food to give a fair assessment of it. Pepito’s is located inside a beer and wine store just south of Middlebrook on 355, near what used to be Montrose Dodge. At first appearance the place looks… dirty. Although I believe that to be more the fault of the owners of the beer store, than the fault of Pepito’s. I first noticed this place because they were roasting Al Pastor outside on a tromba with an open flame off the side of 355. WOW! That makes a statement(note: this is for attention grabbing only, not the food they are serving). I finally went in this afternoon, and talked to the owner. This is the same guy(family?) that owned the Pepito’s in Gaithersburg(may have been E Diamond Ave). There is a salsa bar inside the place that has cilantro, onions, jalopenos, 2 types of salsa(red, and green) and then(for some reason) a variety of Korean accoutrements, like what looked to be kim chee, bok choy and another pickled vegetable dish. Anyway, onto the food… I ordered a 2 taco plate with rice and beans, one Al Pastor, one Carne Asada. The meat was grilled to order, double wrapped in corn tortillas, and I took it to go. At fist glance when I got home, the rice looked very bland. After tasting it, I found it was well seasoned, and mildly spicy. The beans are refried, they come with cheese on top and honestly, they tasted funny. They were okay, but had an odd after taste. The carne asada was a little overcooked, and therefore tough, but the flavor was good. The al pastor was delicious, well cooked and full of flavor. Tacos came with onions and some cilantro. Both the green and red salsas were spicy, and tasty. Pepito’s also has the other usual meats(chicken, carnitas, lengua to name a few) and they do tortas, enchiladas, quesadillas etc. I found the food to be tasty enough that I will certainly be back(it is 5 minutes from the house) but not as good as Tortacos or Taco Bar. I will certainly be trying them again, to see if I am wowed by anything else they have to serve.
