1st time for me to this restaurant. Will not ever return. After ordering food we waited over 45 minutes for it to arrive. Waitress apologized for the food taking so long. When we got there the restaurant was empty. Appetizers came out with our dinner. Soup was only luke warm. Fajitas were not hot as well. My tacos were not hot. Husbands fish tacos were hot but had no flavor. The fish tacos looked like they had run to the store and picked up Mrs pauls frozen fish patties. Their salsa was very bland and very un eventful. The whole dinner was a huge disappointment. We were offered desert for our long wait time of the food and again, not good. We never complained to the waitress but in addition to the free desert we were told out drinks were free. Did leave our usual tip of 20%. I keep looking over the reviews and see some really good ones and have no idea why. Too many good restaurants in Richmond to ever go back.

Food is usually really good but not tonight. Salsa was watered down tortilla chips had no salt. I always order the Plaza del Mar but it was extremely salty and almost no rice on the plate. My server was average only checked on me twice.

Although I have been to Plaza Azteca many times this was my first experience with their food(Brook Road location). Wanting to keep it light(as light as this type of meal could be) I ordered something simple, Fajtas Nachos, which comes with your choice of grilled steak or chicken sautéed with onions, red and green bell peppers. I chose steak. The nachos tasted really stale, and the meat was not seasoned well; if at all, which was a real disappointment. I also ordered a Corona Margarita — let’s face it — best of both worlds. But alas this too was a major let down, it was more syrup filler than anything. I am giving them a 3 mainly for the service, we sat at the bar, and the bartender, who proudly announced that this was her first day, was super prompt and super sweet! The food, while a bust on this visit, still would not stop me from making another trip to Plaza Azteca, well at least the Broad Street location.

I have been here a bunch of times and have yet to have a bad experience. The waiters are very nice and accommodating. I just went here with a big group from work and they were happy to split our checks up – I always feel so bad doing that! Their table side guac is amazing, and I also love their chips and salsa and fajitas. A great place for some Mexican food!

Everything about the meal was awesome… service — fantastic, margaritas — refreshing, fresh guacamole — delicious, main course — amazing… overall a tremendous dining experience. Highly recommended.

So, I decided to give it another go. It’s been awhile since my previous review and I figured, maybe, just maybe, they were having an off night. Well, I am happy to report, that I was right the first time. All this trip did was take $ 30 out of my pocket and remind me to trust my gut instinct.

Though I usually try to avoid chains, my family has come to enjoy this restaurant for a nice, quick Friday night meal. The salsa is some of the best I’ve had outside of the southwest and they are not skimpy on the chips and salsa. I have tried a variety of the menu items and haven’t found anything that jumps out as a superb find but everything tastes good. Some of the steak dishes are greasy and the tamales are dry. But I’ve liked everything else. Ambiance is just fine if a little loud but that means my young children can be loud without worrying about annoying the other patrons.

The food was good and the service was good. There were a few mix ups with my food, and that’s the only reason I didn’t give them 4 stars. The restaurant had nice décor, and an intimate feeling even though it was busy. We were seated quickly and our the server was pleasant and quick. However, my order came out wrong(they gave me a beef enchilada instead of chicken). When I told her, our waitress seemed disgruntled, and blamed kitchen. She returned about 10 minutes later with my dinner, but it was still wrong! I was supposed to have 1 cheese enchilada and 1 chicken enchilada, but now I had 2 chicken enchiladas. They were decent, but I would have been a lot happier if I had gotten what I ordered. I’ll give them another try a little later down the road.

At first look, this place looks really cool and fits with the theme. We were greeted at the door quickly and seated right away. The hostess didn’t really look at us and seemed like she didn’t really care for her job. I did like that she told us to watch our steps with the uneven parts of the floor. On the inside it seems pretty dark but it has a good ambiance. I really like the décor and the huge fireplaces throughout. The music wasn’t too loud and everything felt pretty comfortable. Our table wasn’t too clean as there were crumbs and a few pieces of trash. We were greeted my a friendly waiter who checked on us pretty often. Actually, a lot of waiters check on us and a different one than from the beginning took our order. It was kind of hard to tell who was supposed to be handling the table. The food was really good. I got two enchiladas with a side of rice. It was cooked nicely and a very good flavor. Overall I really enjoyed my lunchtime experience here and I would consider coming back to see what it’s like when they are busy.

I wrote a much longer review of the location on West Broad. This location is newer and the staff is super nice. Our waiter kept calling us amigos and I replied in Spanish. My 3 amigos dusted their plates so I guess they liked the food. I wiped my plate clean so I don’t really have any complaints. Have I had better? Of course. I’m a first generation Mexican-American from southern California. Does this place satisfy the crave for Mexican food? Yes, yes it does. Fellow Unilocalers have said the food quality is on the decline at this location. They also say the West Broad location puts out better food. I think they’re right to be honest. While I felt the food was decent it wasn’t 4 stars like I rated the West Broad location. However, decent Mexican food at Plaza Azteca is still vastly superior to that mierda they serve at Mexico Restaurant. $ 0.02
